Samson Is Born
1Once again the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord handed them over to the Philistines for 40 years.
2A certain man from Zorah was named Manoah. He was from the tribe of Dan. Manoah had a wife who wasn’t able to have children. 3The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife. He said, “You are not able to have children. But you are going to become pregnant. You will have a baby boy. 4Make sure you do not drink any kind of wine. Also make sure you do not eat anything that is ‘unclean.’ 5You will become pregnant. You will have a son. The hair on his head must never be cut. That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will be set apart to God from the day he is born. He will take the lead in saving Israel from the power of the Philistines.”
6Then the woman went to her husband. She told him, “A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God. His appearance was so amazing that it filled me with great wonder. I didn’t ask him where he came from. And he didn’t tell me his name. 7But he said to me, ‘You will become pregnant. You will have a son. So do not drink any kind of wine. Do not eat anything that is “unclean.” That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will belong to God in a special way from the day he is born until the day he dies.’ ”
8Then Manoah prayed to the Lord. He said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again. He told us we would have a son. We want the man of God to teach us how to bring up the boy.”
9God heard Manoah. And the angel of God came again to the woman. He came while she was out in the field. But her husband Manoah wasn’t with her. 10The woman hurried to her husband. She told him, “He’s here! The man who appeared to me the other day is here!”
11Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he spoke to him. He said, “Are you the man who talked to my wife?”
“I am,” he replied.
12So Manoah asked him, “What will happen when your words come true? What rules should we follow for the boy’s life and work?”
13The angel of the Lord answered him. He said, “Your wife must do everything I have told her to do. 14She must not eat anything that comes from grapevines. She must not drink any kind of wine. She must not eat anything that is ‘unclean.’ She must do everything I have commanded her to do.”
15Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “We would like you to stay and eat. We want to prepare a young goat for you.”
16The angel of the Lord replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat any of your food. But if you still want to prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” Manoah didn’t realize it was the angel of the Lord.
17Then Manoah asked the angel of the Lord a question. “What is your name?” he said. “We want to honor you when your word comes true.”
18The angel replied, “Why are you asking me what my name is? You would not be able to understand it.” 19Manoah got a young goat. He brought it along with the grain offering. He sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. Then the Lord did an amazing thing. It happened while Manoah and his wife were watching. 20A flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven. The angel of the Lord rose up in the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw it, they fell with their faces to the ground. 21The angel of the Lord didn’t show himself again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realized it was the angel of the Lord.
22“We’re going to die!” he said to his wife. “We’ve seen God!”
23But his wife answered, “The Lord doesn’t want to kill us. If he did, he wouldn’t have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from us. He wouldn’t have shown us all these things. He wouldn’t have told us we’re going to have a son.”
24Later, the woman had a baby boy. She named him Samson. As he grew up, the Lord blessed him. 25The Spirit of the Lord began to work in his life. It happened while he was in Mahaneh Dan. That place is between Zorah and Eshtaol.

1イスラエル人はまたも、ほかの神々を拝む罪を犯しました。それで主は、ペリシテ人がイスラエルを征服するにまかせたので、イスラエルは四十年間、彼らの支配下に置かれることになりました。
2-3ある日のこと、主の使いが、ツォルアに住むダン族の氏族でマノアという人の妻に現れました。彼女は子どものいない女でしたが、主の使いはこう告げたのです。「あなたには長い間子どもができなかったが、まもなく身ごもり、男の子を産む。 4今からはぶどう酒や強い酒を飲んではいけない。それに、律法で禁じられている食べ物も口にしてはいけない。 5生まれてくる子の頭には、かみそりを当ててはならない。その子は、神に仕えるナジル人（「ささげられた者」「聖別された者」の意）として、生まれた時から特別にきよめられているからだ。やがてその子は、イスラエルをペリシテ人から救い出すことになる。」
6マノアの妻は夫のもとへ駆けつけ、一部始終を話しました。「神様からのお使いが来られたの。天使に違いありません。あまりに神々しくて、まともに見ることもできなかったわ。どちらからいらしたのか、お尋ねもできなかったし、その方も名をお告げにならなかったの。 7でも、こうおっしゃったわ。『あなたは男の子を産む』って。そして、ぶどう酒や強い酒を飲んではいけないし、律法で禁じられている食べ物も口にしてはいけないと。その子は、生涯、神様にささげられたナジル人だからとおっしゃったのです。」
8それを聞いて、マノアは祈りました。「ああ、主よ。どうかそのお方をもう一度、私たちのもとへお送りください。生まれてくる子にどうしてやればよいのか、もっと教えていただきたいのです。」
9祈りは聞かれ、神の使いがもう一度、マノアの妻のもとに遣わされました。この時も、彼女は一人だけで畑にいて、夫は居合わせませんでした。 10彼女は急いで夫を捜しに行き、「あの方がまた、おいでになった」と告げました。 11マノアは妻といっしょに大急ぎでその人のところに駆けつけました。「あなた様は、いつか妻にお語りくださったお方でしょうか。」
「そうです。」
12「男の子が生まれたら、どのように育てたらよいか、教えていただきたいのです。」
13-14「あなたの妻に言っておいたことすべてを守りなさい。彼女は、ぶどうも干しぶどうも食べてはならない。ぶどう酒も強い酒も口にせず、律法で禁じられている物も食べてはいけない。」
15「少しお待ちください。何かお食事をご用意いたします。」
16「ここにいるのはよいが、何も食べるわけにはいかない。どうしてもと言うなら、主にささげるいけにえとして持って来なさい。」マノアは、その人が主の使いであることに、まだ気づいていなかったのです。
17マノアは、その人の名前を尋ねました。「おことばどおり男の子が生まれたら、あなた様の預言のとおりになったと、みんなに知らせたいのです。」
18「なぜ名前など尋ねるのか。それは知らされるべきではない。」
19マノアは子やぎと穀物の供え物を手にし、主にささげました。すると主の使いは、とても不思議なことをして見せたのです。 20祭壇から天に立ちのぼる炎をマノアとその妻が見ていると、なんと、その炎の中をその人が昇って行くのです。二人は思わず地にひれ伏しました。 21これが、二人がその人を見た最後でした。この時初めて、マノアはその人が主の使いであることを悟ったのです。
22マノアは叫びました。「私たちは助からないだろう。神様を見てしまったのだから。」
23しかし、妻は答えました。「もし神様が私たちのいのちを取るおつもりなら、どうして焼き尽くすいけにえをお受けくださったのでしょう。それに、このように私たちの前に現れてくださったり、不思議なことを予告なさったり、先ほどのような奇跡を見せてくださったりするはずもありません。」
24さて、二人に男の子が生まれると、サムソンという名がつけられました。その子は主に祝福されて、すくすくと育ちました。 25成人したサムソンが、ツォルアとエシュタオルの町との中間点にあるダン族の練兵場を訪れるたびに、主の霊は、彼を奮い立たせ始めたのです。
