The Israelites Fight Against the Remaining Canaanites
1Joshua died. After that, the Israelites spoke to the Lord. They asked him, “Who of us will go up first and fight against the Canaanites?”
2The Lord answered, “The tribe of Judah will go up. I have handed the land over to them.”
3Then the men of Judah spoke to their fellow Israelites, the men of Simeon. They said, “Come up with us. Come into the territory Joshua gave us. Help us fight against the Canaanites. Then we’ll go with you into your territory.” So the men of Simeon went with them.
4When the men of Judah attacked, the Lord helped them. He handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They struck down 10,000 men at Bezek. 5The men of Judah found Adoni-Bezek there. They fought against him. They struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6But Adoni-Bezek ran away. The men of Judah chased him and caught him. Then they cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7Adoni-Bezek said, “I cut off the thumbs and big toes of 70 kings. I made them pick up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” The men of Judah brought Adoni-Bezek to Jerusalem. That’s where he died.
8The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it. They set the city on fire. They killed its people with their swords.
9After that, the men of Judah went down to fight against some Canaanites. Those Canaanites were living in the central hill country. They also fought against those living in the Negev Desert and the western hills. 10Then the men of Judah marched out against the Canaanites living in Hebron. Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. The men of Judah won the battle over Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. 11From Hebron they marched out against the people living in Debir. It used to be called Kiriath Sepher.
12Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah to be married. I’ll give her to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13Othniel captured it. So Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him to be his wife. Othniel was the son of Kenaz. He was Caleb’s younger brother.
14One day Aksah came to Othniel. She begged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15She replied, “Do me a special favor. You have given me some land in the Negev Desert. Give me springs of water also.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
16Moses’ father-in-law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.
17The men of Judah marched out with their fellow Israelites, the men of Simeon. They attacked the people of Canaan living in Zephath. They set the city apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. That’s why the city was called Hormah. 18The men of Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron. They also captured the territory around each of those cities.
19The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took over the central hill country. But they weren’t able to drive the people out of the plains. That’s because those people used chariots that had some iron parts. 20Moses had promised to give Hebron to Caleb. So Hebron was given to Caleb. He drove the three sons of Anak out of it. 21But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day they live there with the people of Benjamin.
22The tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel. The Lord was with them. 23They sent men to Bethel to check it out. It used to be called Luz. 24Those who were sent saw a man coming out of the city. They said to him, “Show us how to get into the city. If you do, we’ll see that you are treated well.” 25So he showed them how to get in. The men of Joseph killed the people in the city with their swords. But they spared the man from Bethel. They also spared his whole family. 26Then he went to the land of the Hittites. He built a city there. He called it Luz. That’s still its name to this day.
27But the tribe of Manasseh didn’t drive out the people of Beth Shan. They didn’t drive out the people of Taanach, Dor, Ibleam and Megiddo. And they didn’t drive out the people of the settlements that are around those cities either. That’s because the Canaanites had made up their minds to continue living in that land. 28Later, Israel became stronger. Then they forced the Canaanites to work hard for them. But Israel never drove them out completely. 29The tribe of Ephraim didn’t drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer. So the Canaanites continued to live there among them. 30The tribe of Zebulun didn’t drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron and Nahalol. So these Canaanites lived among them. But the people of Zebulun forced the Canaanites to work hard for them. 31The tribe of Asher didn’t drive out the people living in Akko and Sidon. They didn’t drive out the people of Ahlab, Akzib, Helbah, Aphek and Rehob. 32So the people of Asher lived among the Canaanites who were in the land. 33The tribe of Naphtali didn’t drive out the people living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath. So the people of Naphtali lived among the Canaanites who were in the land. The people of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were forced to work hard for them. 34The Amorites made the people of Dan stay in the central hill country. They didn’t let them come down into the plain. 35The Amorites made up their minds to stay in Mount Heres. They also stayed in Aijalon and Shaalbim. But the power of the tribes of Joseph grew. Then the Amorites were forced to work hard for them. 36The border of the Amorites started at Scorpion Pass. It went to Sela and even past it.
Israel luta contra os restantes cananeus
(Js 15.15-19)
1Após a morte de Josué, a nação de Israel consultou o Senhor para receber as suas instruções. “Qual será a tribo que deverá ir primeiro à guerra contra os cananeus?”, perguntaram.
2A resposta do Senhor foi: “Judá. E dar-lhe-ei uma grande vitória.”
3Os líderes da tribo de Judá, contudo, pediram auxílio à tribo de Simeão: “Venham connosco lutar contra o povo que está ainda na porção de terra que nos coube em sorte, e depois seremos nós a ajudar-vos a conquistar a vossa parte.” E assim o exército de Simeão foi com o de Judá.
4Quando Judá subiu para lutar, o Senhor ajudou-os a derrotarem os cananeus e os perizeus, de tal forma que houve 10 000 baixas, da parte do inimigo, em Bezeque. 5Ali enfrentaram Adoni-Bezeque e, lutando contra ele, venceram os cananeus e perizeus. 6O rei Adoni-Bezeque conseguiu fugir, mas o exército de Israel capturou-o de seguida, e cortaram-lhe os dedos polegares dos pés e das mãos. 7“Fiz o mesmo a 70 reis que depois andavam a apanhar migalhas debaixo da minha mesa!”, dizia o rei Adoni-Bezeque. “Agora Deus pagou-me da mesma moeda.” Foi levado para Jerusalém e ali morreu.
8Judá tinha conquistado Jerusalém e destruído a sua população, pondo fogo à cidade. 9Depois o exército de Judá combateu os cananeus na região das colinas, no Negueve e nas planícies costeiras. 10Posteriormente, retomou a luta contra eles em Hebrom (antigamente chamada Quiriate-Arba), destruindo-lhes as cidades de Sesai, Aimã e Talmai. 11Por último atacaram a cidade de Debir, antigamente chamada Quiriate-Sefer.
12“Quem vai comandar o ataque contra Quiriate-Sefer?”, desafiou Calebe. “Quem a conquistar terá a minha filha Acsa como mulher!” 13Foi Otniel, filho de Quenaz, irmão mais novo de Caleb, quem tomou a cidade, casando assim com Acsa.
14Quando estavam para ir viver juntos para o seu novo lar, ele pediu-lhe insistentemente que pedisse ao pai mais terra. E foi ela própria que, vendo seu pai Calebe, desceu da montada em que ia para lhe falar no assunto. “Que pretendes?”, disse-lhe o pai ao vê-la aproximar-se.
15“O que é que se passa?”, perguntou-lhe o pai. “Que pretendes?” “Dá-me outra doação! Porque a terra que já me deste é um deserto. Dá-me também fontes para ter água!” Então deu-lhe as fontes superiores e as das terras mais baixas.
16Quando a tribo de Judá foi instalar-se no seu novo território, no deserto do Negueve, a sul de Arade, os descendentes do sogro de Moisés, membros do grupo dos queneus, acompanharam-na. Deixaram as suas casas em Jericó, a cidade das palmeiras, e passaram a viver juntos com a tribo de Judá.
17Posteriormente, a tribo de Judá juntou-se à de Simeão, para combater os cananeus na cidade de Zefate, e destruíram a população. Assim, a cidade passou a ser chamada Horma (destruição). 18O exército de Judá conquistou igualmente as cidades de Gaza, Asquelom e Ecrom, com as localidades da sua jurisdição.
19O Senhor ajudou a tribo de Judá a exterminar o povo das colinas, ainda que tivessem falhado na tentativa de conquistar o povo do vale, que tinha carros de ferro. 20A cidade de Hebrom foi dada a Calebe, conforme as instruções de Moisés. Assim, Calebe lançou fora os seus habitantes, que eram descendentes dos três filhos de Anaque. 21A tribo de Benjamim não exterminou os jebuseus que viviam em Jerusalém; por isso, ainda lá vivem hoje misturados com os benjamitas.
22-23Quanto à tribo de José, atacaram a cidade de Betel, anteriormente conhecida por Luz, e o Senhor esteve com eles. 24Primeiro enviaram espias que capturaram um homem que vinha a sair da cidade. Propuseram-lhe poupar a vida dele e da sua família, se desse a conhecer a passagem através da muralha para entrar na cidade. 25O homem concordou; mostrou-lhes como entrar lá dentro e eles massacraram a população toda, exceto este homem e a sua família. 26Mais tarde, aquele homem foi para a terra dos hititas e edificou ali uma cidade, à qual chamou também Luz, como é ainda conhecida hoje.
27A tribo de Manassés também não expulsou os povos que viviam em Bete-Seã, Taanaque, Dor, Ibleão e Megido, nem tão-pouco nos lugares circunvizinhos; e assim os cananeus continuaram a viver ali. 28Anos mais tarde, quando os israelitas se tornaram mais fortes, puseram os cananeus a trabalhar como escravos, mas nunca os forçaram a deixar o território.
29Aconteceu o mesmo, aliás, com os cananeus que viviam em Gezer; ainda lá estão habitando no meio da tribo de Efraim.
30A tribo de Zebulão também não destruiu o povo de Quitrom nem de Naalol, mas fizeram-nos seus escravos.
31A tribo de Aser também não expulsou os residentes de Aco, Sídon, Alabe, Aczibe, Helba, Afeca, nem de Reobe; 32e assim os aseritas vivem ainda entre os cananeus, o povo indígena daquela terra.
33O mesmo se deu com a tribo de Naftali que não pôs fora o povo de Bete-Semes nem de Bete-Anate; e essa gente continua a viver com eles como servos.
34Quanto à tribo de Dan, os amorreus forçaram-nos a circunscreverem-se à região das colinas e não os deixaram descer para os vales. 35Quando mais tarde os amorreus tentaram espalhar-se em Har-Heres, Aijalom e Saalabim, a tribo de José dominou-os e fez deles escravos. 36A fronteira dos amorreus começa na subida de Acrabim, desde Sela para cima.
