Achan Sins Against the Lord
1But the Israelites weren’t faithful to the Lord. They didn’t destroy what had been set apart to him. So they did not do what they had been told to do. Achan had taken some of those things. So the Lord became very angry with Israel. Achan was the son of Karmi. Karmi was the son of Zimri. And Zimri was the son of Zerah. Achan and all his relatives were from the tribe of Judah.
2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai. Ai is near Beth Aven east of Bethel. Joshua told the men, “Go up and check out the area around Ai.” So the men went up and checked it out.
3Then they returned to Joshua. They said, “The whole army doesn’t have to go up and attack Ai. Send only two or three thousand men. They can take the city. Don’t make the whole army go up there. Only a few people live in Ai.” 4So only about 3,000 troops went up. But the men of Ai drove them away. 5They chased the Israelites from the city gate all the way to Shebarim. They killed about 36 of them on the way down. So the Israelites were terrified.
6Joshua and the elders of Israel became sad. Joshua tore his clothes. He fell in front of the ark of the Lord with his face to the ground. He remained there until evening. The elders did the same thing. They also sprinkled dust on their heads. 7Joshua said, “Lord and King, why did you ever bring these people across the Jordan River? Did you want to hand us over to the Amorites? Did you want them to destroy us? I wish we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8Lord, our enemies have driven us away. What can I say? 9The Canaanites will hear about it. So will everyone else in the country. They will surround us. They’ll erase any mention of our name from the face of the earth. Then what will you do when people don’t honor your great name anymore?”
10The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! What are you doing down there on your face? 11Israel has sinned. I made a covenant with them. I commanded them to keep it. But they have broken it. They have taken some of the things that had been set apart to me in a special way to be destroyed. They have stolen. They have lied. They have taken the things they stole and have put them with their own things. 12That is why the Israelites can’t stand up against their enemies. They turn their backs and run. That’s because I have decided to let them be destroyed. You must destroy the things you took that had been set apart to me. If you do not, I will not be with you anymore.
13“Go and set the people apart. Tell them, ‘Make yourselves pure. Get ready for tomorrow. Here is what the Lord, the God of Israel, wants you to do. He says, “People of Israel, you have kept some of the things that had been set apart to me to be destroyed. You can’t stand up against your enemies until you get rid of those things.”
14“ ‘In the morning, come forward tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses will come forward group by group. The group the Lord chooses will come forward family by family. And the men in the family the Lord chooses will come forward one by one. 15Whoever is caught with the things that had been set apart to the Lord will be destroyed by fire. Everything that belongs to that person will also be destroyed. He has broken the Lord’s covenant. He has done a very terrible thing in Israel!’ ”
16Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes. The tribe of Judah was chosen. 17The groups of Judah came forward. The group of Zerah was chosen. Joshua had the group of Zerah come forward by families. The family of Zimri was chosen. 18He had their men come forward one by one. Achan was chosen. Achan was the son of Karmi. Karmi was the son of Zimri. And Zimri was the son of Zerah. Zerah was from the tribe of Judah.
19Joshua said to Achan, “My son, the Lord is the God of Israel. So give him glory and honor him by telling the truth! Tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.”
20Achan replied, “It’s true! I’ve sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. Here is what I’ve done. 21I saw a beautiful robe from Babylonia among the things we had taken. I saw five pounds of silver. And I saw a gold bar that weighed 20 ounces. I wanted them, so I took them. I hid them in the ground inside my tent. The silver is on the bottom.”
22So Joshua sent some messengers. They ran to Achan’s tent. And there was everything, hidden in his tent! The silver was on the bottom. 23They brought the things out of the tent. They took them to Joshua and all the Israelites. And they spread them out in the sight of the Lord.
24Then Joshua and all the people grabbed Achan, the son of Zerah. They took the silver, the robe and the gold bar. They took Achan’s sons and daughters. They took his cattle, donkeys and sheep. They also took his tent and everything he had. They carried all of it out to the Valley of Achor. 25Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”
Then all the people killed Achan by throwing stones at him. They also killed the rest of his family with stones. They burned all of them up. 26They placed a large pile of rocks on top of Achan’s body. The place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since. That pile is still there to this day. After the people killed Achan, the Lord was no longer angry with them.
La faute d’Akân
1Les Israélites commirent un acte d’infidélité à l’égard des objets voués à l’Eternel : Akân, fils de Karmi7.1 L’ancienne version grecque et 1 Ch 2.6 ont : Zimri. et descendant de Zabdi et de Zérah, de la tribu de Juda, prit pour lui certains de ces objets, et l’Eternel se mit en colère contre les Israélites.
2De Jéricho, Josué envoya des hommes à la ville d’Aï7.2 Selon l’identification traditionnelle, ville à environ 2 kilomètres à l’est de Béthel (10.2), qui existait déjà du temps d’Abraham (Gn 12.8). près de Beth-Aven à l’est de Béthel, en leur demandant d’explorer cette région. Ils allèrent explorer Aï. 3A leur retour, ils dirent à Josué : Il est inutile d’envoyer toute l’armée : deux ou trois mille hommes suffiront pour battre Aï. Ne donne pas de fatigue à tout le peuple, car l’adversaire est peu nombreux.
4Ainsi, environ trois mille soldats allèrent attaquer la ville, mais ils furent mis en fuite par les habitants d’Aï 5qui leur tuèrent environ trente-six hommes : ils les poursuivirent depuis la porte de la ville jusqu’à Shebarim et les battirent dans la descente. Alors le peuple atterré perdit tous ses moyens.
6Josué déchira ses vêtements7.6 Signe de consternation et de détresse ou de deuil (voir Gn 37.29, 34 ; Jg 11.35)., il se jeta, la face contre terre, devant le coffre de l’Eternel et resta là jusqu’au soir. Les responsables d’Israël firent de même. Et ils se jetèrent de la poussière sur la tête. 7Josué s’écria : Ah ! Seigneur Eternel, pourquoi donc as-tu fait traverser le Jourdain à ce peuple, si c’est pour nous livrer aux Amoréens et nous faire périr ? Si seulement nous étions restés de l’autre côté du fleuve ! 8Maintenant, je te prie, Seigneur, que puis-je dire après qu’Israël a pris la fuite devant ses ennemis ? 9Les Cananéens et les autres habitants du pays l’apprendront, ils nous encercleront et feront disparaître notre nom de la terre. Comment alors feras-tu reconnaître ta grandeur ?
10L’Eternel répondit à Josué : Lève-toi ! Pourquoi restes-tu prostré la face contre terre ? 11Israël a commis un péché. On a transgressé l’alliance que j’avais établie pour eux. On a pris des objets qui m’étaient voués, on en a dérobé, caché et mis dans ses propres affaires. 12C’est pourquoi les Israélites ne pourront plus résister à leurs ennemis, ils fuiront devant eux car ils sont sous le coup d’une sentence de destruction. Je ne continuerai pas à être avec vous si vous ne détruisez pas ce qui est au milieu de vous. 13Maintenant, lève-toi, Josué, convoque le peuple et purifie-le. Dis-leur : « Purifiez-vous pour demain, car voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël ! Vous avez au milieu de vous, Israélites, ce qui m’est voué. Vous ne pourrez pas résister à vos ennemis tant que vous n’aurez pas ôté cela du milieu de vous. 14Demain matin, vous vous présenterez devant moi, par tribus. Puis la tribu que l’Eternel désignera par le sort7.14 Sans doute au moyen de l’ourim et du toummim (voir note Ex 28.30). se présentera, groupe familial par groupe familial, et le groupe familial que l’Eternel désignera s’avancera famille par famille. Dans la famille que j’aurai désignée, les hommes se présenteront un par un. 15Celui qui sera désigné comme coupable d’avoir pris ce qui m’était voué sera brûlé avec tout ce qui lui appartient, parce qu’il a transgressé l’alliance de l’Eternel et qu’il a commis une infamie en Israël. »
Le châtiment d’Akân
16Le lendemain, Josué se leva de bon matin et fit avancer les Israélites tribu par tribu. Et c’est la tribu de Juda qui fut désignée. 17Il la fit approcher groupe familial par groupe familial, le sort désigna celui de Zérah. Il fit passer les familles du groupe familial de Zérah l’une après l’autre, et c’est la famille de Zabdi qui fut désignée. 18Il fit avancer cette famille homme par homme, et Akân, fils de Karmi, descendant de Zabdi et de Zérah, de la tribu de Juda, fut désigné par le sort.
19Josué lui dit : Mon fils, je te prie solennellement, au nom de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, de l’honorer en m’avouant ce que tu as fait, sans rien me cacher.
20Akân lui répondit : C’est vrai, j’ai commis une faute envers l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël. Voici ce que j’ai fait : 21J’ai vu dans le butin un magnifique manteau de Babylone7.21 En hébreu, Shinéar, ancien nom du territoire de Babylone (Gn 10.10)., deux cents pièces d’argent et un lingot d’or d’une livre. J’en ai eu fortement envie, alors je m’en suis emparé. Ces objets sont enterrés au milieu de ma tente, et l’argent est en-dessous.
22Josué envoya des hommes à la tente d’Akân, ils se dépêchèrent d’y aller et retrouvèrent effectivement le manteau enfoui dans la tente et l’argent en-dessous. 23Ils prirent le tout et l’apportèrent à Josué et à tous les Israélites, puis on le déposa devant l’Eternel. 24Josué, aidé de tous les Israélites, saisit Akân avec l’argent, le manteau et le lingot d’or, ainsi que ses fils, ses filles, ses bœufs, ses ânes, ses brebis, sa tente, bref, tout ce qui lui appartenait, et ils les menèrent dans la vallée d’Akor7.24 Vallée que l’on n’identifie pas avec certitude.. 25Josué dit à Akân : Pourquoi nous as-tu attiré le malheur7.25 Le verbe hébreu rendu par attiré le malheur fait assonance avec le nom Akor. ? Que l’Eternel fasse ton malheur aujourd’hui ! Alors tous les Israélites le lapidèrent. Ils lapidèrent aussi tous les siens et brûlèrent les cadavres. 26Puis on éleva sur lui un grand tas de pierres qui existe encore aujourd’hui. Après cela, l’Eternel abandonna sa colère. C’est à cette occasion que l’endroit fut appelé vallée d’Akor (vallée du Malheur), nom qui lui est resté jusqu’à ce jour.
