Towns Are Given to the Levites
1The leaders of the Levite family groups approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun. They also approached the leaders of the family groups of Israel’s other tribes. 2They went to all of them at Shiloh in Canaan. They said to them, “Give us towns to live in. Also give us grasslands for our livestock. That’s what the Lord commanded through Moses.”
3So the Israelites gave the Levites towns and grasslands out of their own shares of land. They did what the Lord had commanded. Here are the towns the Levites were given.
4The first lot drawn out was for the people of Kohath, according to their family groups. Some of the Levites came from the family line of Aaron the priest. They were given 13 towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
5The rest of Kohath’s family groups were given ten towns. Those towns were from the family groups of the tribes of Ephraim and Dan and half of the tribe of Manasseh.
6The family groups of Gershon were given 13 towns. Those towns were from the family groups of the tribes of Issachar, Asher and Naphtali and half of the tribe of Manasseh. That part of Manasseh was in the land of Bashan.
7The family groups of Merari received 12 towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. Each family group received its share.
8So the Israelites gave those towns and their grasslands to the Levites. They did what the Lord had commanded through Moses.
9Some towns were given from the territories of the tribes of Judah and Simeon. 10The Israelites gave them to the members of the family line of Aaron. The towns were given to the family groups of Kohath. They were Levites. The first lot drawn out was for them. Here are the towns the family groups of Kohath were given.
11The Israelites gave them Kiriath Arba and the grasslands around it. Kiriath Arba is also called Hebron. It’s in the hill country of Judah. Anak came from the family line of Arba. 12But Israel had already given away the fields and villages around the city. They had given them to Caleb as his share. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh. 13So they gave Hebron to the members of the family line of Aaron the priest. Hebron was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also gave them Libnah, 14Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15Holon, Debir, 16Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh. They gave those towns and their grasslands to the family groups of Kohath. The total number of towns from the tribes of Judah and Simeon came to nine.
17The Israelites gave some towns from the tribe of Benjamin to the family groups of Kohath.
The towns were Gibeon, Geba, 18Anathoth and Almon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
19So the total number of towns and their grasslands given to the priests in Aaron’s family line came to 13.
20There were other family groups of Kohath among the Levites. They were given towns from the tribe of Ephraim. Here are the towns those other family groups of Kohath were given.
21In the hill country of Ephraim they were given
Shechem. It was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They were also given Gezer, 22Kibzaim and Beth Horon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
23From the tribe of Dan they received
Eltekeh, Gibbethon, 24Aijalon and Gath Rimmon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
25From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received
Taanach and Gath Rimmon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to two.
26So all these ten towns and their grasslands were given to the other family groups of Kohath.
27Here are the towns given to the family groups of Gershon among the Levites.
From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received
Golan in the land of Bashan. Golan was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Be Eshterah. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to two.
28From the tribe of Issachar they received
Kishion, Daberath, 29Jarmuth and En Gannim. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
30From the tribe of Asher they received
Mishal, Abdon, 31Helkath and Rehob. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
32From the tribe of Naphtali they received
Kedesh in Galilee. Kedesh was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Hammoth Dor and Kartan. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to three.
33So the total number of towns and their grasslands given to the family groups of Gershon came to 13.
34The rest of the Levites were from the family groups of Merari. Here are the towns they were given.
From the tribe of Zebulun they received
Jokneam, Kartah, 35Dimnah and Nahalal. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
36From the tribe of Reuben they received
Bezer, Jahaz, 37Kedemoth and Mephaath. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
38From the tribe of Gad they received
Ramoth in Gilead. Ramoth was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Mahanaim, 39Heshbon and Jazer. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.
40So the total number of towns given to the family groups of Merari came to 12. That concludes the list of towns the rest of the Levites received.
41The total number of Levite towns and their grasslands in the territory given to Israel came to 48. 42Each of those towns had grasslands around it. That was true of all of them.
43So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And Israel took it over. Then they made their homes there. 44The Lord gave them peace and rest on every side. He had promised their people of long ago that he would do that. Not one of Israel’s enemies was able to fight against them and win. The Lord handed all their enemies over to them. 45The Lord kept all the good promises he had made to the Israelites. Every one of them came true.
Le tirage au sort de l’ordre d’attribution de villes aux lévites
1Les chefs de groupe familial des lévites vinrent trouver le prêtre Eléazar, Josué, fils de Noun, et les chefs de groupe familial des autres tribus d’Israël 2à Silo, dans le pays de Canaan. Ils leur dirent : L’Eternel a ordonné par l’intermédiaire de Moïse de nous donner des villes pour que nous y habitions, avec leurs terres attenantes pour que nous y fassions paître notre bétail.
3Les Israélites prélevèrent donc sur leur patrimoine un certain nombre de villes avec leurs terres attenantes pour les donner aux lévites, conformément à l’ordre de l’Eternel21.3 Voir Nb 35.1-8..
4Le tirage au sort désigna en premier lieu les familles des Qehatites21.4 Voir Ex 6.16-25 ; Nb 3.17-19, 27-32.. Parmi eux, les lévites qui descendaient du prêtre Aaron reçurent par tirage au sort treize villes situées dans les territoires de Juda, de Siméon et de Benjamin. 5Les autres Qehatites obtinrent par tirage au sort dix villes dans les territoires des familles de la tribu d’Ephraïm, de la tribu de Dan et de la demi-tribu de Manassé. 6Les Guershonites obtinrent par tirage au sort treize villes dans les territoires des familles des tribus d’Issacar, d’Aser, de Nephtali et de la demi-tribu de Manassé établie dans le Basan. 7Les Merarites reçurent pour leurs familles douze villes situées dans les territoires des tribus de Ruben, de Gad et de Zabulon. 8Les Israélites attribuèrent ces villes et leurs terres attenantes par le sort aux lévites, comme l’Eternel l’avait ordonné par l’intermédiaire de Moïse.
Les villes des descendants d’Aaron
9Ils attribuèrent les villes suivantes désignées par leur nom et situées dans le territoire des tribus de Juda et de Siméon 10aux descendants d’Aaron appartenant aux familles des Qehatites, descendants de Lévi, auxquels fut attribué par le sort le premier lot : 11Qiryath-Arba, c’est-à-dire la ville d’Arba, l’ancêtre d’Anaq, appelée Hébron. Cette ville est située dans la région montagneuse de Juda et fut donnée avec ses terres attenantes, 12mais les champs et les villages qui dépendaient de la ville furent donnés à Caleb, fils de Yephounné. 13On donna aux descendants du prêtre Aaron les villes suivantes, avec leurs terres attenantes : Hébron, la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Libna, 14Yattir, Eshtemoa, 15Holôn, Debir, 16Aïn21.16 Au lieu d’Aïn, l’ancienne version grecque a : Achan., Youtta et Beth-Shémesh ; soit neuf villes avec leurs terres attenantes situées dans le territoire des tribus de Juda et de Siméon. 17Dans le territoire de la tribu de Benjamin, ils reçurent avec leurs terres attenantes : Gabaon, Guéba, 18Anatoth, Almôn, soit quatre villes. 19Au total treize villes et leurs terres attenantes pour les descendants du prêtre Aaron.
Les villes des Qehatites
20Les autres lévites, appartenant aux familles des Qehatites21.20 Qui n’étaient pas prêtres puisqu’ils ne descendaient pas d’Aaron., obtinrent par tirage au sort des villes dans le territoire de la tribu d’Ephraïm 21avec leurs terres attenantes : Sichem, la ville de refuge, dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm, Guézer, 22Qibtsaïm, Beth-Horôn, soit quatre villes. 23Dans le territoire de la tribu de Dan, ils eurent, avec leurs terres attenantes : Elteqé, Guibbetôn, 24Ayalôn, Gath-Rimmôn, soit quatre villes. 25Dans le territoire de la demi-tribu de Manassé, ils reçurent, avec leurs terres attenantes : Taanak, Gath-Rimmôn21.25 Au lieu de Gath-Rimmôn, déjà mentionnée au v. 24, l’ancienne version grecque a : Ibléam., soit deux villes. 26Les autres familles des descendants de Qehath reçurent donc en tout dix villes avec leurs terres attenantes.
Les villes des descendants de Guershôn
27Les familles de lévites issus de Guershôn reçurent, dans le territoire de la demi-tribu de Manassé, les villes suivantes avec leurs terres attenantes : Golân, la ville de refuge, dans le Basan, et Beéshtra, soit deux villes. 28Dans le territoire de la tribu d’Issacar, ils reçurent, avec leurs terres attenantes : Qishyôn, Dobrath, 29Yarmouth, Eyn-Gannim, soit quatre villes. 30Dans le territoire de la tribu d’Aser, avec les terres attenantes : Misheal, Abdôn, 31Helqath, Rehob, soit quatre villes. 32Et dans le territoire de la tribu de Nephtali : Qédesh en Galilée, la ville de refuge, Hammoth-Dor et les terres attenantes, Qartân et les terres attenantes, soit trois villes. 33Les familles guershonites reçurent donc en tout treize villes avec leurs terres attenantes.
Les villes des descendants de Merari
34Les familles des descendants de Merari reçurent, dans le territoire de la tribu de Zabulon, les villes suivantes avec leurs terres attenantes : Yoqneam, Qarta, 35Dimna, Nahalal, soit quatre villes. 36En Transjordanie, dans le territoire de la tribu de Ruben, ils reçurent avec leurs terres attenantes : Bétser, la ville de refuge, Yahats21.36 Les v. 36 et 37 manquent dans les manuscrits hébreux les plus anciens mais ils se trouvent dans l’ancienne version grecque et la Vulgate, et ils ont leur parallèle en 1 Ch 6.62-66., 37Qedémoth, Méphaath, soit quatre villes. 38Et dans le territoire de la tribu de Gad, avec leurs terres attenantes : Ramoth en Galaad, la ville de refuge, Mahanaïm, 39Heshbôn, Yaezer, soit quatre villes. 40Les descendants de Merari reçurent donc en tout par tirage au sort pour leurs familles, appartenant aux familles des lévites, douze villes.
41Au total les lévites reçurent quarante-huit villes avec les terres attenantes dans les territoires des autres Israélites. 42Chacune de ces villes comprenait des terres attenantes servant de pâturages.
Dieu tient ses promesses
43L’Eternel donna aux Israélites tout le pays qu’il avait promis par serment à leurs ancêtres. Ils en prirent possession et s’y établirent. 44L’Eternel leur accorda de vivre sans être inquiétés par aucun ennemi autour d’eux, comme il l’avait promis par serment à leurs ancêtres ; il leur donna la victoire sur tous leurs ennemis, aucun d’eux ne put leur résister. 45Ainsi toutes les promesses de bienfaits que l’Eternel avait données au peuple d’Israël s’accomplirent : aucune d’elles ne resta sans effet.
