Land for the Tribes West of the Jordan River
1The rest of the tribes of Israel received their shares of land in Canaan. Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun, decided what each of the tribes should receive. The leaders of the tribes helped them make these decisions. 2The shares of nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh were decided by casting lots. That’s what the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3Moses had given two tribes and the other half of the tribe of Manasseh their shares east of the Jordan River. But Moses had not given the Levites a share among the other tribes. 4Manasseh and Ephraim were the sons of Joseph. They had become two tribes. The Levites didn’t receive any share of the land. They only received towns to live in and grasslands for their flocks and herds. 5So the Israelites divided up the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Joshua Gives Hebron to Caleb
6The people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, spoke to Joshua. He said, “You know what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God. He spoke to him at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to check out the land. I was 40 years old at that time. I brought back an honest report to him. I told him exactly what I had seen. 8Several other men of Israel went up with me. What they reported terrified the people. But I followed the Lord my God with my whole heart. 9So on that day Moses made a promise to me. He said, ‘The land you have walked on will be your share. It will be the share of your children forever. That’s because you have followed the Lord my God with your whole heart.’ (Deuteronomy 1:36)
10“The Lord has done just as he promised. He made the promise while Israel was wandering around in the desert. That was 45 years ago. He has kept me alive all this time. So here I am today, 85 years old! 11I’m still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. I’m just as able to go out to battle now as I was then. 12So give me this hill country. The Lord promised it to me that day. At that time you yourself heard that the Anakites were living there. You also heard that their cities were large and had high walls around them. But I’ll drive them out, just as the Lord said I would. He will help me do it.”
13Then Joshua blessed Caleb, the son of Jephunneh. He gave him Hebron as his share. 14So ever since that time Hebron has belonged to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. That’s because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, with his whole heart. 15Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. It was named after Arba. He was the greatest man among the Anakites.
So the land had peace and rest.
División de los territorios al occidente del Jordán
1Estas son las tierras cananeas que el sacerdote Eleazar, Josué, hijo de Nun, y los jefes de los clanes entregaron a los israelitas como herencia. 2Esa herencia se repartió por sorteo a las nueve tribus y media, tal como el Señor había ordenado por medio de Moisés. 3Ya este les había dado por herencia la parte oriental del Jordán a las dos tribus y media, pero a los levitas no les dio tierras, 4porque los descendientes de José se habían dividido en dos tribus, Manasés y Efraín. Los levitas no recibieron tierras, solo algunas poblaciones con sus respectivos campos de cultivo y pastoreo. 5Así los israelitas dividieron el territorio tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado a Moisés.
Caleb recibe Hebrón
6Los descendientes de Judá se acercaron a Josué en Guilgal. El quenizita Caleb, hijo de Jefone, pidió a Josué: «Acuérdate de lo que el Señor dijo a Moisés, hombre de Dios, respecto a ti y a mí en Cades Barnea. 7Yo tenía cuarenta años cuando Moisés, siervo del Señor, me envió desde Cades Barnea para explorar el país y con toda franqueza le informé de lo que vi. 8Mis compañeros de viaje, por el contrario, desanimaron a la gente y le infundieron temor. Pero yo me mantuve fiel al Señor mi Dios. 9Ese mismo día Moisés me hizo este juramento: “La tierra que toquen tus pies será herencia tuya y de tus descendientes para siempre, porque fuiste fiel al Señor mi Dios”.14:9 Dt 1:36.
10»Ya han pasado cuarenta y cinco años desde que el Señor hizo la promesa por medio de Moisés, mientras Israel peregrinaba por el desierto; aquí estoy este día con mis ochenta y cinco años: ¡el Señor me ha mantenido con vida! 11Y todavía mantengo la misma fortaleza que tenía el día en que Moisés me envió. Para la batalla tengo las mismas energías que tenía entonces. 12Dame, pues, la región montañosa que el Señor me prometió en esa ocasión. Desde ese día, tú bien sabes que los anaquitas habitan allí y que sus ciudades son enormes y fortificadas. Sin embargo, con la ayuda del Señor los expulsaré de ese territorio, tal como él ha prometido».
13Entonces Josué bendijo a Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y le dio por herencia el territorio de Hebrón. 14A partir de ese día Hebrón ha pertenecido al quenizita Caleb, hijo de Jefone, porque fue fiel al Señor, Dios de Israel. 15Hebrón se llamaba originalmente Quiriat Arbá, porque Arbá fue un importante antepasado de los anaquitas.
Después de todo esto el país se vio libre de guerras.
