Jesus Goes to the Feast of Booths
1After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He didn’t want to travel around in Judea. That was because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2The Jewish Feast of Booths was near. 3Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea. Then your disciples there will see the works that you do. 4No one who wants to be well known does things in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5Even Jesus’ own brothers did not believe in him.
6So Jesus told them, “The time for me to show who I really am is not here yet. For you, any time would be the right time. 7The people of the world can’t hate you. But they hate me. This is because I am a witness that their works are evil. 8You go to the feast. I am not going up to this feast. This is because my time has not yet fully come.” 9After he said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10But when his brothers had left for the feast, he went also. But he went secretly, not openly. 11At the feast the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus. They were asking, “Where is he?”
12Many people in the crowd were whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”
Others replied, “No. He fools the people.” 13But no one would say anything about him openly. They were afraid of the leaders.
Jesus Teaches at the Feast
14Jesus did nothing until halfway through the feast. Then he went up to the temple courtyard and began to teach. 15The Jews there were amazed. They asked, “How did this man learn so much without being taught?”
16Jesus answered, “What I teach is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17Here is how someone can find out whether my teaching comes from God or from me. That person must choose to do what God wants them to do. 18Whoever speaks on their own does it to get personal honor. But someone who works for the honor of the one who sent him is truthful. Nothing about him is false. 19Didn’t Moses give you the law? But not one of you obeys the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”
20“You are controlled by demons,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22Moses gave you circumcision, and so you circumcise a child on the Sabbath day. But circumcision did not really come from Moses. It came from Abraham. 23You circumcise a boy on the Sabbath day. You think that if you do, you won’t break the law of Moses. Then why are you angry with me? I healed a man’s entire body on the Sabbath day! 24Stop judging only by what you see. Judge in the right way.”
People Don’t Agree About Who Jesus Is
25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began asking questions. They said, “Isn’t this the man some people are trying to kill? 26Here he is! He is speaking openly. They aren’t saying a word to him. Have the authorities really decided that he is the Messiah? 27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28Jesus was still teaching in the temple courtyard. He cried out, “Yes, you know me. And you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority. The one who sent me is true. You do not know him. 29But I know him. I am from him, and he sent me.”
30When he said this, they tried to arrest him. But no one laid a hand on him. The time for him to show who he really was had not yet come. 31Still, many people in the crowd believed in him. They said, “How will it be when the Messiah comes? Will he do more signs than this man?”
32The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering things like this about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time. Then I will go to the one who sent me. 34You will look for me, but you won’t find me. You can’t come where I am going.”
35The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man plan to go? Does he think we can’t find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks? Will he go there to teach the Greeks? 36What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you won’t find me’? And what did he mean when he said, ‘You can’t come where I am going’?”
37It was the last and most important day of the feast. Jesus stood up and spoke in a loud voice. He said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38Does anyone believe in me? Then, just as Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from inside them.” 39When he said this, he meant the Holy Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit later. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given. This was because Jesus had not yet received glory.
40The people heard his words. Some of them said, “This man must be the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”
41Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah will come from the family line of David? Doesn’t it say that he will come from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43So the people did not agree about who Jesus was. 44Some wanted to arrest him. But no one laid a hand on him.
The Jewish Leaders Do Not Believe
45Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees. They asked the guards, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47“You mean he has fooled you also?” the Pharisees asked. 48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him? 49No! But this mob knows nothing about the law. There is a curse on them.”
50Then Nicodemus, a Pharisee, spoke. He was the one who had gone to Jesus earlier. He asked, 51“Does our law find a man guilty without hearing him first? Doesn’t it want to find out what he is doing?”
52They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Look into it. You will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
53Then they all went home.
Si Jesus ug ang Iyang mga Igsoon nga Lalaki
1Pagkahuman niadto, naglibot-libot si Jesus sa Galilea. Gilikayan niya ang pag-adto sa Judea tungod kay ang mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio nagtinguha sa pagpatay kaniya. 2Unya, sa dihang duol na ang pagsaulog sa mga Judio sa gitawag nga Pista sa mga Tolda, 3miingon ang mga igsoon ni Jesus kaniya, “Biya dinhi ug adto sa Judea aron makita sa imong mga tinun-an ang mga milagro nga imong gibuhat. 4Kay walay tawo nga magtago sa iyang buhat kon buot siyang mahimong inila. Busa kon nagabuhat ka man gayod niini nga mga milagro ipakita kini sa tanan!” 5(Mao kini ang gisulti sa mga igsoon ni Jesus kay bisan sila wala man motuo kaniya.) 6Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Mahimo ninyong buhaton ang inyong gusto sa bisan unsa nga panahon, apan alang kanako, dili pa kini ang husto nga higayon nga buhaton ko ang angay kong buhaton. 7Dili kamo dumtan sa mga tawo dinhi sa kalibotan, apan gidumtan nila ako kay gipadayag ko man nga daotan ang ilang binuhatan. 8Kamo lay tambong sa pista. Dili ako motambong kay dili pa kini ang akong tukma nga panahon.” 9Human niya kini masulti kanila nagpabilin siya sa Galilea.
Miadto si Jesus sa Pista
10Apan sa nakagikan na ang mga igsoon ni Jesus aron motambong sa pista, misunod si Jesus sa hilom tungod kay dili niya buot nga masayran sa mga tawo nga atua siya didto. 11Didto sa pista, gipangita siya sa mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio. Miingon sila, “Hain siya?” 12Naghinunghongay ang mga tawo mahitungod kaniya. Ang uban nagaingon “Maayo siya nga tawo.” Apan ang uban usab nagaingon, “Dili kana tinuod, kay ginalimbongan lang niya ang mga tawo.” 13Apan walay misulti sa dayag mahitungod kaniya, kay nahadlok sila sa mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio.
14Sa dihang nanungatunga na ang pista, miadto si Jesus sa templo ug nagtudlo. 15Natingala gayod ang mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio. Miingon sila, “Asa man nakakuha ug kaalam kining tawhana? Wala gani siya makaeskwela.”7:15 Wala gani siya makaeskwela: Tingali ang buot ipasabot, wala siya makaeskwela aron mahimong usa ka magtutudlo. 16Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Ang mga gitudlo ko kaninyo wala maggikan kanako, kondili naggikan sa Amahan nga nagpadala kanako. 17Si bisan kinsa nga gustong motuman sa kabubut-on sa Dios, makahibalo kon ang akong gitudlo gikan ba sa Dios o gikan lang kanako. 18Ang tawo nga nagatudlo gikan sa iyang kaugalingon nga kaalam nagapasidungog sa iya lang kaugalingon. Apan ang nagapasidungog sa nagpadala kaniya, mao ang katuohan ug dili bakakon. 19Dili ba gihatag man ni Moises kaninyo ang Kasugoan? Apan wala gayoy bisan usa kaninyo nga nagatuman niini, tungod kay kon nagatuman pa kamo, nganong gusto man ninyo akong patyon?” 20Miingon ang mga tawo, “Gisudlan ka tingalig daotan nga espiritu! Ngano, kinsa man ang gustong mopatay kanimo?” 21Miingon si Jesus, “Natingala kamo tungod kay may tawo ako nga giayo sa Adlaw nga Igpapahulay. 22Apan huna-hunaa ra gud ninyo: gitudloan kamo ni Moises nga kinahanglan tulion ang inyong mga anak nga lalaki. (Hinuon wala kini magsugod kang Moises kondili sa nauna pa gayod ninyong mga katigulangan). Busa gihimo ninyo kini bisan sa Adlaw nga Igpapahulay. 23Kon tulion gani ninyo ang bata sa Adlaw nga Igpapahulay aron dili ninyo malapas ang Kasugoan ni Moises,7:23 Sumala sa kasugoan ni Moises kinahanglan tulion sa mga Judio ang ilang mga anak sa ikawalo nga adlaw gikan sa ilang pagkatawo. Ginatuli nila sila bisan pa nga ang ikawalo nga adlaw natunong sa Adlaw nga Igpapahulay. nganong nasuko man kamo kanako tungod kay giayo ko ang usa ka tawo sa Adlaw nga Igpapahulay? 24Ayaw una kamo paghukom nga daotan ang gibuhat sa tawo kon wala pa ninyo kini masusi. Susiha una aron masayran ninyo ang tinuod.”
Naghuna-huna ang mga Tawo kon si Jesus mao na ba ang Cristo
25May mga taga-Jerusalem nga nagaingon, “Dili ba mao man kini ang tawo nga gitinguhaang patyon sa atong mga kadagkoan? 26Apan ania siya nagasulti atubangan sa mga tawo, ug ang atong mga kadagkoan wala man lay ikasulti batok kaniya. Unsa kaha, nasayod na ba sila nga siya mao ang Cristo? 27Apan nahibaloan nato kon asa gikan kining tawhana. Ug inig-abot sa Cristo walay mahibalo kon asa siya gikan.”
28Gikusgan dayon ni Jesus ang iyang tingog didto sa templo. Miingon siya, “Nahibaloan na ba ninyo kon kinsa gayod ako, ug kon asa ako gikan? Ang tinuod, wala ako moanhi dinhi sa akong kaugalingon nga pagbuot, kondili ang tinuod nga Dios mao ang nagpadala kanako. Wala ninyo siya mailhi. 29Apan ako nakaila kaniya, tungod kay ako gikan man kaniya, ug siya ang nagpadala kanako.” 30Tungod niining gisulti ni Jesus, dakpon na unta siya sa mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio. Apan walay midakop kaniya, kay wala pa man moabot ang iyang panahon.7:30 ang iyang panahon: Ang buot ipasabot, ang kabubut-on sa Dios. 31Bisan pa niana, daghan pa gihapon sa mga tawo ang mituo kaniya. Nagaingon sila, “Siya na gayod ang Cristo, kay walay bisan kinsa nga makalabaw sa mga milagro nga iyang gipanghimo.”
Gisugo ang mga Sundalo sa Pagdakop kang Jesus
32Nakadungog ang mga Pariseo sa hinunghongay sa mga tawo mahitungod kang Jesus, busa sila ug ang kadagkoan sa mga pari misugo sa mga guwardya sa templo nga dakpon si Jesus. 33Miingon si Jesus, “Hamubo na lang ang panahon nga ako makig-uban kaninyo tungod kay mobalik na ako sa nagpadala kanako. 34Pangitaon ninyo ako, apan dili na ninyo ako makita, tungod kay dili kamo makaadto sa akong adtoan.” 35Nagpangutan-anay ang mga kadagkoan sa mga Judio, “Asa diay siya moadto nga dili na man nato siya makita? Unsa, moadto ba siya sa mga siyudad sa mga Griego (diin nagkatibulaag ang uban nga mga Judio) aron manudlo sa mga Griego? 36Kay nganong moingon man siya nga ‘Pangitaon ninyo ako, apan dili na ninyo ako makita, tungod kay dili kamo makaadto sa akong adtoan’?”
Ang Tubig nga Nagahatag ug Kinabuhi
37Unya, miabot ang kataposan nga adlaw sa pista. Mao kini ang labing mahinungdanong adlaw sa pista. Niining adlawa mitindog si Jesus ug misulti ug kusog, “Si bisan kinsa nga giuhaw moduol kanako ug moinom. 38Kay sumala sa Kasulatan, si bisan kinsa nga magtuo kanako, modagayday gikan sa iyang kasingkasing ang tubig nga nagahatag ug kinabuhi.” 39(Ang buot ipasabot ni Jesus sa tubig nga nagahatag ug kinabuhi mao ang Espiritu Santo nga hapit nang madawat sa mga nagatuo kaniya. Niadtong higayona wala pa ikahatag ang Espiritu Santo, tungod kay wala pa man makabalik si Jesus ngadto sa langit.)
Nagkalain-lain ang Pagtuo sa mga Tawo bahin kang Jesus
40Daghang mga tawo ang nakadungog sa gisulti ni Jesus. Ang uban nagaingon, “Kini nga tawo mao na gayod ang Propeta nga atong gipaabot.” 41Miingon usab ang uban, “Mao na kini ang Cristo!” Apan may nagaingon usab, “Dili mahimo, kay ang Cristo dili magagikan sa Galilea. 42Dili ba nagaingon man ang Kasulatan nga ang Cristo magagikan sa kaliwat ni David, ug matawo sa lungsod sa Betlehem nga lugar ni David?” 43Busa nagkalain-lain ang pagtuo sa mga tawo mahitungod kang Jesus. 44Ang uban kanila gustong modakop kaniya, apan walay nakaako paghimo niini.
Dili Motuo kang Jesus ang mga Tigdumala
45Unya, namalik ang mga guwardya sa templo ngadto sa mga kadagkoan sa mga pari ug mga Pariseo nga nagsugo kanila sa pagdakop kang Jesus. Pag-abot sa mga guwardya, miingon dayon ang nagsugo kanila, “Nganong wala ninyo siya dakpa ug dad-a dinhi?” 46Miingon ang mga guwardya, “Karon pa gayod kami nakadungog ug tawo nga sama niadto manulti.” 47Miingon ang mga Pariseo, “Ang buot ninyong ipasabot nga bisan kamo nalimbongan usab niya? 48Aduna ba kamoy nakita nga Pariseo o usa sa atong mga kadagkoan nga mituo kaniya? 49Wala gayod! Ang mga tawo lang nga wala masayod sa Kasugoan ni Moises ang mituo kaniya. Tunglohon gayod sila sa Dios.” 50Ang usa niining mga Pariseo mao si Nicodemus. Mao kini siya ang tawo nga nakigkita kaniadto kang Jesus. 51Miingon siya sa iyang mga kauban, “Dili ba supak man sa atong kasugoan nga hukman ang tawo sa dili pa nato madungog gikan kaniya kon unsa ang iyang gibuhat?” 52Miingon sila kang Nicodemo, “Unsa, mora man usab kag taga-Galilea! Susiha ra gud ang Kasulatan ug makita mo nga wala gayoy propeta sa Dios nga magagikan sa Galilea.” 53[Pagkahuman niadto namauli silang tanan.]
