Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world. It was time for him to go to the Father. Jesus loved his disciples who were in the world. So he now loved them to the very end.
2They were having their evening meal. The devil had already tempted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. He had urged Judas to hand Jesus over to his enemies. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put everything under his power. He also knew he had come from God and was returning to God. 4So he got up from the meal and took off his outer clothes. He wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a large bowl. Then he began to wash his disciples’ feet. He dried them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6He came to Simon Peter. “Lord,” Peter said to him, “are you going to wash my feet?”
7Jesus replied, “You don’t realize now what I am doing. But later you will understand.”
8“No,” said Peter. “You will never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you can’t share life with me.”
9“Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too!”
10Jesus answered, “People who have had a bath need to wash only their feet. The rest of their body is clean. And you are clean. But not all of you are.” 11Jesus knew who was going to hand him over to his enemies. That was why he said not every one was clean.
12When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes. Then he returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You are right. That is what I am. 14I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16What I’m about to tell you is true. A slave is not more important than his master. And a messenger is not more important than the one who sends him. 17Now you know these things. So you will be blessed if you do them.
Jesus Tells What Judas Will Do
18“I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this will happen so that this passage of Scripture will come true. It says, ‘The one who shared my bread has turned against me.’ (Psalm 41:9)
19“I am telling you now, before it happens. When it does happen, you will believe that I am who I am. 20What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who accepts someone I send accepts me. And anyone who accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21After he had said this, Jesus’ spirit was troubled. He said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you is going to hand me over to my enemies.”
22His disciples stared at one another. They had no idea which one of them he meant. 23The disciple Jesus loved was next to him at the table. 24Simon Peter motioned to that disciple. He said, “Ask Jesus which one he means.”
25The disciple was leaning back against Jesus. He asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus answered, “It is the one I will give this piece of bread to. I will give it to him after I have dipped it in the dish.” He dipped the piece of bread. Then he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
So Jesus told him, “Do quickly what you are going to do.” 28But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Judas was in charge of the money. So some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to poor people. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
Peter Will Say He Does Not Know Jesus
31After Judas was gone, Jesus spoke. He said, “Now the Son of Man receives glory. And he brings glory to God. 32If the Son brings glory to God, God himself will bring glory to the Son. God will do it at once.
33“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me. Just as I told the Jews, so I am telling you now. You can’t come where I am going.
34“I give you a new command. Love one another. You must love one another, just as I have loved you. 35If you love one another, everyone will know you are my disciples.”
36Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus replied, “Where I am going you can’t follow now. But you will follow me later.”
37“Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for you.”
38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really give your life for me? What I’m about to tell you is true. Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me!
Jesus tvättar sina lärjungars fötter
1Påskhögtiden skulle snart börja och Jesus visste att hans stund nu hade kommit då han skulle lämna världen och återvända till sin Fader. Han hade älskat sina egna som var i världen och älskade dem in i det sista.
2De hade samlats för att äta tillsammans och djävulen hade redan ingett Judas, Simon Iskariots son i hjärtat att förråda Jesus. 3Jesus visste att Fadern hade gett honom makt över allting och att han hade kommit från Gud och skulle återvända till Gud. 4Så han reste sig nu från bordet, tog av sig manteln och virade en handduk om sig. 5Sedan hällde han vatten i ett handfat och började tvätta sina lärjungars fötter och torka dem med handduken som han hade virat om sig.
6Men när han kom till Simon Petrus, sa Simon till honom: ”Herre, ska du tvätta mina fötter?”
7Då svarade Jesus: ”Du förstår inte just nu vad jag gör men en dag ska du förstå det.”
8Petrus sa: ”Aldrig i evighet får du tvätta mina fötter!”
Men Jesus sa till honom: ”Om jag inte tvättar dig, har du ingen del i mig.”
9Då sa Simon Petrus: ”Herre, tvätta mina händer och mitt huvud också då och inte bara fötterna!”
10Men Jesus sa till honom: ”Den som har badat behöver bara få sina fötter tvättade för att vara helt och hållet ren. Och ni är rena men inte alla.” 11Jesus visste nämligen vem som skulle förråda honom. Det var därför han sa att inte alla var rena.
12När Jesus hade tvättat deras fötter, tog han på sig manteln igen och slog sig ner vid bordet. Sedan frågade han dem: ”Förstår ni vad jag har gjort med er? 13Ni kallar mig Mästare och Herre och det är rätt att ni gör det för det är vad jag är. 14Men om nu jag som är er Herre och Mästare har tvättat era fötter, då är också ni skyldiga att tvätta varandras fötter. 15Jag har gett er ett exempel att följa: gör som jag har gjort mot er. 16Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: en tjänare står inte över sin herre och en budbärare står inte över den som har sänt honom. 17När ni nu vet detta är ni lyckliga om ni också praktiserar det.
Jesus förutsäger att han ska bli förrådd
(Matt 26:20-25; Mark 14:17-21; Luk 22:21-23)
18Jag talar inte om er alla. Jag känner er som jag har valt ut men Skriftens ord måste gå i uppfyllelse: ’Den som åt mitt bröd har lyft sin häl mot mig.’13:18 Jfr Ps 41:10. ”Äta någons bröd” syftar på en nära gemenskap (måltidsgemenskap), lyfta sin häl mot någon: att vända sig mot denne, bli en aktiv motståndare. 19Jag säger det redan nu innan det händer så att ni när det har hänt, ska tro att jag är den jag är13:19 Se not till 6:20.. 20Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: den som tar emot någon som jag sänder, han tar emot mig. Och den som tar emot mig, han tar emot honom som har sänt mig.”
21När Jesus hade sagt detta blev han upprörd i sitt innersta och vittnade: ”Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: en av er kommer att förråda mig!”
22Hans lärjungar såg då på varandra och undrade vem han kunde mena. 23En av hans lärjungar, den som han älskade,13:23 Vilken lärjunge Johannes syftade på avslöjas först i 21:20-24. var närmast intill Jesus sida vid bordet 24och Simon Petrus gjorde därför tecken åt honom att fråga Jesus vem han talade om. 25Lärjungen lutade sig då mot Jesus och frågade: ”Herre, vem är det?”
26Jesus svarade: ”Det är han som får brödstycket som jag nu doppar i fatet.” Sedan doppade han brödstycket och gav det till Judas, Simon Iskariots son. 27Och i samma ögonblick som Judas fick brödet, for Satan in i honom. Jesus sa då till honom: ”Skynda dig, gör det du ska!”
28Ingen av de andra vid bordet förstod varför Jesus sa så till honom. 29Eftersom Judas skötte om kassan trodde några att han bad honom gå ut och köpa det man behövde till högtiden eller ge något till de fattiga. 30Men när Judas hade fått brödet, gick han genast ut. Det var natt.
31Så snart han hade gått, sa Jesus: ”Människosonen är nu förhärligad, och Gud är förhärligad i honom. 32Om nu Gud är förhärligad i honom,13:32 En del handskrifter saknar: Om nu Gud är förhärligad i honom. ska Gud också förhärliga honom i sig själv. Han ska snart förhärliga honom. 33Mina barn, ännu en kort tid ska jag vara kvar hos er. Sedan ska ni förgäves söka efter mig, och så som jag sa till judarna säger jag nu till er: Dit jag går kan ni inte komma. 34Nu ger jag er ett nytt bud: att ni ska älska varandra. Så som jag har älskat er, ska ni också älska varandra! 35Genom att ni älskar varandra ska människorna förstå att ni är mina lärjungar.”
Jesus förutsäger Petrus förnekelse
(Matt 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Luk 22:33-34)
36Simon Petrus frågade då Jesus: ”Herre, vart går du?”
Jesus svarade: ”Dit jag går nu kan du inte följa med men senare ska du följa mig.”
37Men Petrus undrade: ”Varför kan jag inte följa med nu? Jag är beredd att dö för dig.”
38Då svarade Jesus: ”Dö för mig, säger du? Ja, sannerligen säger jag dig: innan tuppen hinner gala, ska du tre gånger ha förnekat mig.
