The Lord Sends an Army of Locusts
1Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion.
Give a warning on my holy mountain.
Let everyone who lives in the land tremble with fear.
The day of the Lord is coming.
It is very near.
2That day will be dark and sad.
It will be black and cloudy.
A huge army of locusts is coming.
They will spread across the mountains
like the sun when it rises.
There has never been an army like it.
And there will never be another
for all time to come.
3Like fire they eat up everything in their path.
Behind them it looks as if flames have burned the land.
In front of them the land is like the Garden of Eden.
Behind them it is a dry and empty desert.
Nothing escapes them.
4They look like horses.
Like war horses they charge ahead.
5They sound like chariots as they leap over the mountaintops.
They crackle like fire burning up dry weeds.
They are like a mighty army
that is ready for battle.
6When people see them, they tremble with fear.
All their faces turn pale.
7The locusts charge ahead like warriors.
They climb over walls like soldiers.
All of them march in line.
They don’t turn to the right or the left.
8They don’t bump into one another.
Each of them marches straight ahead.
They charge through everything that tries to stop them.
But they still stay in line.
9They attack a city.
They run along its wall.
They climb into houses.
They enter through windows like robbers.
10As they march forward, the earth shakes.
The heavens tremble as they approach.
The sun and moon grow dark.
And the stars stop shining.
11The Lord thunders with his mighty voice
as he leads his army.
He has so many forces they can’t even be counted.
The army that obeys his commands is mighty.
The day of the Lord is great and terrifying.
Who can live through it?
Let Your Hearts Be Broken
12The Lord announces to his people,
“Return to me with all your heart.
There is still time.
Do not eat any food.
Weep and mourn.”
13Don’t just tear your clothes to show how sad you are.
Let your hearts be broken.
Return to the Lord your God.
He is gracious.
He is tender and kind.
He is slow to get angry.
He is full of love.
He won’t bring his judgment.
He won’t destroy you.
14Who knows? He might turn toward you
and not bring his judgment.
He might even give you his blessing.
Then you can bring grain offerings and drink offerings
to the Lord your God.
15Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion.
Announce a holy fast.
Tell the people not to eat anything.
Gather them together for a special service.
16Bring them together.
Set all of them apart to me.
Bring together the elders.
Gather the children and the babies
who are still nursing.
Let the groom leave his bedroom.
Let the bride leave their marriage bed.
17Let the priests who serve the Lord weep.
Let them cry between the temple porch and the altar.
Let them say, “Lord, spare your people.
Don’t let others make fun of them.
Don’t let the nations laugh at them.
Don’t let them tease your people and say,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
The Lord Answers the Prayer of His People
18Then the Lord was concerned for his land.
He took pity on his people.
19He replied,
“I am sending you grain, olive oil and fresh wine.
It will be enough to satisfy you completely.
I will never allow other nations
to make fun of you again.
20“I will drive far away from you
the army that comes from the north.
I will send some of its forces
into a dry and empty land.
Its eastern troops will drown in the Dead Sea.
Its western troops will drown in the Mediterranean Sea.
Their dead bodies will stink.”
The Lord has done great things.
21Land of Judah, don’t be afraid.
Be glad and full of joy.
The Lord has done great things.
22Wild animals, don’t be afraid.
The desert grasslands are turning green again.
The trees are bearing their fruit.
The vines and fig trees are producing rich crops.
23People of Zion, be glad.
Be joyful because of what the Lord your God has done.
He has given you the right amount of rain in the fall.
That’s because he is faithful.
He has sent you plenty of showers.
He has sent fall and spring rains alike,
just as he did before.
24Your threshing floors will be covered with grain.
Olive oil and fresh wine will spill over
from the places where they are stored.
25The Lord says,
“I sent a great army of locusts to attack you.
They included common locusts, giant locusts,
young locusts and other locusts.
I will make up for the years
they ate your crops.
26You will have plenty to eat.
It will satisfy you completely.
Then you will praise me.
I am the Lord your God.
I have done wonderful things for you.
My people will never again be put to shame.
27You will know that I am with you in Israel.
I am the Lord your God.
There is no other God.
So my people will never again be put to shame.
The Day of the Lord Is Coming
28“After that, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will have dreams.
Your young men will have visions.
29In those days I will pour out my Spirit
on those who serve me, men and women alike.
30I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth.
There will be blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
31The sun will become dark.
The moon will turn red like blood.
It will happen before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
32Everyone who calls out to me will be saved.
On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
some of my people will be left alive.
I have chosen them.
That is what I have promised.

1Sunați din trâmbiță1, 15 Ebr.: șofar, un instrument de suflat făcut din corn de berbec (ebr.: yyobel), care nu avea o funcție muzicală, ci era folosit pentru a transmite anumite semnale în închinare, în adunările publice sau în război. în Sion!
Scoateți un strigăt puternic pe muntele Meu cel sfânt!
Să tremure locuitorii țării,
căci vine ziua Domnului!
Este aproape
2acea zi a întunericului și a negurii,
acea zi a norilor și a întunericului adânc!
Ca zorii care se aștern peste munți,
așa vine un popor numeros și puternic,
cum n‑a mai fost vreodată din vechime
și nici nu va mai fi după el
în anii generațiilor viitoare.
3Focul mistuie înaintea lor,
iar după ei arde flacăra.
Înaintea lor țara este ca grădina Edenului,
dar după ei rămâne un deșert sterp;
nimic nu le scapă.
4La înfățișare sunt precum caii
și aleargă ca niște armăsari de luptă.4 Sau: precum cavaleria.
5Vin huruind ca niște care
și sar peste vârfurile munților;
pocnesc ca o flacără de foc
ce mistuie pleava.
Ei sunt ca un popor puternic,
gata de luptă.
6Înaintea lor tremură popoarele;
toate fețele pălesc6 Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur..
7Aleargă ca niște viteji,
se urcă pe ziduri ca niște războinici.
Fiecare își ține drumul lui
și nu se abate de pe calea lui.
8Nu se înghiontesc unii pe alții;
fiecare mărșăluiește înainte.
Se năpustesc printre săgeți8 Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur.,
fără a rupe rândurile.
9Năvălesc în cetate,
aleargă pe ziduri,
se urcă pe case
și intră prin ferestre ca hoțul.
10Pământul se cutremură înaintea lor,
cerurile se zguduie,
soarele și luna se întunecă,
iar stelele își pierd strălucirea.
11Domnul Își face auzit glasul
în fruntea armatei Sale.
Într-adevăr, tabăra Sa este foarte numeroasă.
Da, cel ce împlinește Cuvântul Său este puternic!
Într-adevăr, mare este ziua Domnului
și de temut! Cine o poate suporta?
Chemare la pocăință
12„Totuși, chiar acum, zice Domnul,
întoarceți‑vă la Mine cu toată inima,
cu post, cu plânset și cu jale.“
13Sfâșiați‑vă inimile, nu hainele!
Întoarceți‑vă la Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru,
căci El este plin de har și milostiv,
încet la mânie și plin de dragoste,
și‑I pare rău când trimite nenorocirea.
14Cine știe? Poate Se va întoarce cu părere de rău
și va lăsa după El o binecuvântare,
un dar de mâncare și o jertfă de băutură
pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru.
15Sunați din trâmbiță în Sion,
declarați15 Vezi nota de la 1:14. Același cuvânt apare în v. 16b. un post,
vestiți o adunare!
16Strângeți poporul,
sfințiți adunarea!
Adunați bătrânii,
strângeți copiii,
chiar și pe cei ce sunt alăptați!
Să iasă mirele din camera sa,
și mireasa din odaia ei.
17Să plângă preoții, slujitorii Domnului,
între portic și altar
și să zică: „Ai milă de poporul Tău, Doamne,
și nu‑Ți face moștenirea de dispreț,
de pomină între neamuri!
De ce să se zică printre popoare:
«Unde este Dumnezeul lor?»“
Răspunsul Domnului la pocăința poporului
18Atunci Domnul va fi gelos pentru țara Sa
și Își va cruța poporul.
19Domnul va răspunde poporului Său și îi va zice:18-19 Sau: Domnul a fost gelos pentru țara Sa / și Și‑a cruțat poporul. / 19 Domnul i‑a răspuns poporului Său și i‑a zis:
„Iată, vă trimit grâne, must și ulei,
ca să vă săturați cu ele;
și nu vă voi mai face de dispreț între neamuri.
20Voi îndepărta de la voi armata din nord,
o voi duce într‑o țară uscată și pustie.
Avangarda ei o voi alunga spre Marea de Răsărit20 Marea Moartă.,
iar ariergarda ei – spre Marea de Apus20 Marea Mediterană..
Duhoarea ei se va înălța
și mirosul ei greu se va ridica.“
Într-adevăr, El a făcut lucruri mari!20 Sau: se va ridica. / Într-adevăr, ea (cu referire la armată) a făcut lucruri mari.
21Nu te teme, pământule,
ci bucură‑te și veselește‑te!
Într-adevăr, Domnul a făcut lucruri mari!
22Nu vă temeți, animale ale câmpului,
căci pășunile pustiei au înverzit.
Pomii își dau rodul,
iar smochinul și via își dau belșugul.
23Bucurați‑vă, fii ai Sionului,
și veseliți‑vă în Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru,
căci El v‑a dat ploaie timpurie23 Sau: v‑a dat învățătorul pentru dreptate; probabil un joc de cuvinte intenționat între hamoreh (învățătorul) și moreh (ploaie timpurie)., cu dreptate,
și v‑a turnat ploaie,
ploaie timpurie și ploaie târzie23 Sau: ploaie tomnatică și ploaie primăvăratică. Sezonul ploios în Canaan începea în octombrie și se sfârșea în aprilie., ca odinioară.
24Ariile de treierat vor fi pline de grâne,
iar teascurile se vor revărsa de must și de ulei.
25„Vă voi răsplăti astfel pentru anii
pe care i‑au devorat lăcustele Arbe,
Ielek, Hasil și Gazam,25 Vezi nota de la 1:4.
armata Mea cea mare pe care am trimis‑o împotriva voastră.
26Veți mânca din belșug și vă veți sătura,
și veți lăuda Numele Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru,
Care a făcut minuni pentru voi.
Poporul Meu nu va mai fi niciodată făcut de rușine.
27Veți ști astfel că Eu sunt în mijlocul lui Israel
și că Eu sunt Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru,
și nu este altul.
Poporul Meu nu va mai fi făcut niciodată de rușine.
Ziua Domnului
28După aceea,
voi turna Duhul Meu peste orice om.28 Lit.: carne.
Fiii și fiicele voastre vor profeți,
bătrânii voștri vor avea28 Lit.: vor visa. vise,
iar tinerii voștri vor avea28 Lit.: vor vedea. vedenii!
29Chiar și peste robi și peste roabe
voi turna din Duhul Meu în acele zile.
30Voi face minuni în cer
și pe pământ,
sânge, foc și coloane de fum.
31Soarele se va preface în întuneric,
iar luna în sânge,
înainte să vină ziua Domnului, cea mare și de temut.
32Atunci oricine va chema
Numele Domnului va fi mântuit!
Căci pe muntele Sion și în Ierusalim
va fi mântuirea,
așa cum a zis Domnul,
și printre supraviețuitorii
pe care îi cheamă Domnul.32 Sau: Domnul, iar printre supraviețuitori / vor fi cei pe care îi cheamă Domnul.
