Control What You Say
1My brothers and sisters, most of you shouldn’t become teachers. That’s because you know that those of us who teach will be held more accountable. 2All of us get tripped up in many ways. Suppose someone is never wrong in what they say. Then they are perfect. They are able to keep their whole body under control.
3We put a small piece of metal in the mouth of a horse to make it obey us. We can control the whole animal with it. 4And how about ships? They are very big. They are driven along by strong winds. But they are steered by a very small rudder. It makes them go where the captain wants to go. 5In the same way, the tongue is a small part of a person’s body. But it talks big. Think about how a small spark can set a big forest on fire. 6The tongue is also a fire. The tongue is the most evil part of the body. It makes the whole body impure. It sets a person’s whole way of life on fire. And the tongue itself is set on fire by hell.
7People have tamed all kinds of wild animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures. And they still tame them. 8But no one can tame the tongue. It is an evil thing that never rests. It is full of deadly poison.
9With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. With our tongues we curse people. We do it even though people have been created to be like God. 10Praise and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, it shouldn’t be this way. 11Can fresh water and salt water flow out of the same spring? 12My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? Of course not. And a saltwater spring can’t produce fresh water either.
Two Kinds of Wisdom
13Is anyone among you wise and understanding? That person should show it by living a good life. A wise person isn’t proud when they do good deeds. 14But suppose your hearts are jealous and bitter. Suppose you are concerned only about getting ahead. Then don’t brag about it. And don’t say no to the truth. 15Wisdom like this doesn’t come down from heaven. It belongs to the earth. It doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit. It comes from the devil. 16Are you jealous? Are you concerned only about getting ahead? Then your life will be a mess. You will be doing all kinds of evil things.
17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is pure. That’s the most important thing about it. And that’s not all. It also loves peace. It thinks about others. It obeys. It is full of mercy and good fruit. It is fair. It doesn’t pretend to be what it is not. 18Those who make peace plant it like a seed. They will harvest a crop of right living.
Panowanie nad językiem
1Moi przyjaciele, niech niewielu z was dąży do tego, aby nauczać innych. Pamiętajcie, że my, nauczający, będziemy sądzeni surowiej niż inni.
2Wszyscy dopuszczamy się wielu grzechów. Jeśli jednak ktoś nie grzeszy w mowie, znaczy to, że stał się człowiekiem w pełni dojrzałym—potrafiącym panować także nad całym sobą. 3Wkładając koniowi do pyska małe wędzidło, sprawiamy, że jest nam posłuszny i możemy kierować całym jego ciałem. 4Również ogromne statki, żeglujące dzięki silnym wiatrom, zmieniają kurs zgodnie z wolą sternika, który posługuje się małym sterem. 5Podobnie język, choć jest małą częścią ciała, potrafi wiele zdziałać. Wielki pożar lasu rozpoczyna się od małego płomienia, 6a język jest właśnie jak płomień ognia—jest pełen zła i niszczy całe ciało. On rozpala w nas szalejący żywioł, prowadzący do zniszczenia i klęski, a źródłem tego ognia jest samo piekło.
7Ludzie są w stanie ujarzmić wszelkie gatunki dzikich zwierząt, ptaków, gadów i morskich stworzeń, 8ale nikt nie potrafi ujarzmić języka—pełnego niepohamowanego zła i śmiercionośnej trucizny. 9Naszym językiem wielbimy Pana i Ojca, a jednocześnie przeklinamy ludzi, stworzonych na obraz Boga. 10Te same usta życzą innym szczęścia i przeklinają ich. Tak, moi przyjaciele, być nie może! 11Czy z jakiegokolwiek źródła wypływa jednocześnie woda słodka i gorzka? 12Czy drzewo figowe może zaowocować oliwkami, a winorośl figami? Czy ze słonego źródła może wypływać słodka woda?
Dwa rodzaje mądrości
13Czy jest wśród was ktoś, kto uważa się za mądrego i rozsądnego? Jeśli tak, niech udowodni to dobrymi czynami, pełnymi łagodności i mądrości. 14A skoro macie w sercach gorzką zazdrość i wrogość, to przynajmniej nie zasłaniajcie się kłamstwem lub przechwałkami. 15Taka „mądrość” nie pochodzi z nieba, ale z ziemi, od ludzi i od demonów. 16Tam zaś, gdzie jest zazdrość i wzajemna wrogość, tam panuje chaos i wszelkie zło.
17Mądrość, która pochodzi z nieba, jest przede wszystkim czysta i dąży do pokoju. Jest łagodna i otwarta, pełna miłości i dobrych czynów, bezstronna i szczera. 18Ci zaś, którzy sieją pokój, jako plon będą zbierać prawość.
