The Sign of Immanuel
1Ahaz was king of Judah. Rezin was king of Aram. And Pekah was king of Israel. Rezin and Pekah marched up to fight against Jerusalem. But they couldn’t overpower it. Ahaz was the son of Jotham and the grandson of Uzziah. Pekah was the son of Remaliah.
2The royal family of Ahaz was told, “The army of Aram has joined forces with Ephraim’s army.” So the hearts of Ahaz and his people trembled with fear. They shook just as trees in the forest shake when the wind blows through them.
3The Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out and see Ahaz. Take your son Shear-Jashub with you. Meet Ahaz at the end of the channel that brings water from the Upper Pool. It is on the road to the Washerman’s Field. 4Tell Ahaz, ‘Be careful. Stay calm. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope because of the great anger of Rezin, Aram and the son of Remaliah. After all, they are nothing but two pieces of smoking firewood. 5Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have planned to destroy you. They said, 6“Let’s march into Judah and attack it. Let’s tear everything down. Then we can share the land among ourselves. And we can make Tabeel’s son king over it.” 7But I am the Lord and King. I say,
“ ‘ “That will not happen.
It will not take place.
8The capital of Aram is Damascus.
And the ruler of Damascus is only Rezin.
Do not worry about the people of Ephraim.
They will be too crushed to be considered a people.
That will happen before 65 years are over.
9The capital of Ephraim is Samaria.
And the ruler of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all.” ’ ”
10The Lord spoke to Ahaz through Isaiah again. He said, 11“I am the Lord your God. Ask me to give you a sign. It can be anything in the deepest grave or in the highest heaven.”
12But Ahaz said, “I won’t ask. I won’t test the Lord.”
13Then Isaiah said, “Listen, you members of the royal family of David! Isn’t it enough for you to test the patience of human beings? Are you also going to test the patience of my God? 14The Lord himself will give you a sign. The virgin is going to have a baby. She will give birth to a son. And he will be called Immanuel. 15He will still be very young when he can decide between right and wrong. 16Even before then, the lands of the two kings you fear will be ruined. 17The Lord will also bring the king of Assyria against you. And he will bring him against your people and the whole royal family. That will be a time of trouble. It will be unlike any since the people of Ephraim broke away from Judah.”
The Lord Uses Assyria to Judge Judah
18At that time the Lord will whistle for the Egyptians. They will come like flies from the Nile River in Egypt. He will also whistle for the Assyrians. They will come from their country like bees. 19All of them will come and camp in the deep valleys. They will camp in caves in the rocks. And they’ll camp near bushes and water holes. 20At that time the Lord will use the Assyrians to punish you. Ahaz had hired them earlier from east of the Euphrates River. Now their king will be like a razor in the Lord’s hand. He will shave the hair from your head and private parts. He will also shave off your beards. 21At that time a person may only be able to keep alive one young cow and two goats. 22But they will give plenty of milk to live on. In fact, everyone left in the land will only have milk curds and honey to eat. 23The land used to have vineyards with 1,000 vines worth 25 pounds of silver. But soon the whole land will be covered with thorns and bushes. 24Hunters will go there with bows and arrows. That’s because it will be covered with bushes and thorns. 25All the hills used to be plowed with hoes. But you won’t go there anymore. That’s because you will be afraid of the thorns and bushes. Cattle will be turned loose on those hills. Sheep will also run there.
Immanuël—God is met ons
1Tijdens de regering van Achaz, de zoon van Jotham en kleinzoon van Uzzia, werd Jeruzalem aangevallen door koning Rezin van Syrië en koning Pekah van Israël. Deze laatste was de zoon van Remalia. Maar Jeruzalem werd niet ingenomen, de stad hield stand. 2Toch beefden de harten van de koning en zijn volk, net zoals bomen van het bos beven voor de wind, toen zij hoorden dat Syrië en Israël bondgenoten waren geworden in de strijd tegen Juda.
3Toen zei de Here tegen Jesaja: ‘Zoek koning Achaz op, samen met uw zoon Schear-Jaschub.’ Schear-Jaschub betekent: een rest zal terugkeren. ‘U kunt hem vinden aan het einde van het aquaduct dat de bron Gihon met het bovenste reservoir verbindt, dichtbij de weg die naar het bleekveld loopt. 4Zeg tegen hem: wees rustig en onbevreesd. Laat uw hart niet ineenkrimpen voor deze twee rokende stukken brandhout, voor de woede van Rezin en Pekah. 5Ja, de koningen van Syrië en Israël trekken ten aanval tegen u en zeggen: 6wij zullen Juda binnenvallen, zodat de bevolking in paniek raakt. We veroveren het en roepen de zoon van Tabeal tot koning over hen uit. 7Maar de Here God zegt: daar komt niets van in, het gebeurt niet. 8Damascus blijft slechts de hoofdstad van Syrië en koning Rezin zal er niet in slagen zijn grondgebied uit te breiden. En binnen vijfenzestig jaar zal ook Efraïm ophouden te bestaan. 9Samaria blijft slechts de hoofdstad van Efraïm en koning Pekah zal zijn macht niet vergroten. Gelooft u Mij niet? Maar als u wilt dat Ik u bescherm, zult u op Mij moeten leren vertrouwen.’
10Verder liet de Here koning Achaz de volgende boodschap overbrengen:
11‘Vraag om een wonderteken van de Here, uw God. Vraag wat u maar wilt, diep beneden in de onderwereld of hoog in de hemel.’ 12Maar de koning weigerde. ‘Nee,’ zei hij, ‘ik wil de Here niet op de proef stellen.’ 13Toen zei Jesaja: ‘O huis van David, u vindt het niet genoeg het geduld van mensen op de proef te stellen, u stelt het geduld van de Here ook nog op de proef!
14Goed dan, de Here zal Zelf een teken vaststellen: een maagd zal een kind krijgen en zij zal het kind Immanuël noemen (dit betekent “God is met ons”). 15Tegen de tijd dat dit kind niet langer melk drinkt en het onderscheid tussen goed en slecht kent, 16zullen de twee koningen voor wie u zo bang bent (de koningen van Israël en Syrië) beiden dood zijn. En hun land zal ontvolkt zijn. 17Maar later zal de Here een vreselijke vloek over u, uw volk en uw gezin brengen. Er zal een terreur heersen die zijn weerga alleen had in de tijd toen Juda en Efraïm uit elkaar gingen, de machtige koning van Assur zal hier komen met zijn enorme leger. 18Op dat moment zal de Here het leger van Opper-Egypte en dat van Assur naar Zich toe fluiten, zodat ze als een zwerm vliegen op u neerstrijken. 19In grote horden zullen zij het hele land overspoelen en zelfs doordringen in verlaten kloven en grotten en de moeilijk doordringbare, doornige gedeelten van het land. Net zoals zij de vruchtbare en openliggende gebieden zullen binnendringen. 20Op die dag zal de Here dit “scheermes” ter hand nemen—dit leger van Assur, dat u aan de overkant van de Eufraat hebt gehuurd om u te redden—en het gebruiken om alles wat u bezit af te scheren, uw land, uw oogsten en uw inwoners. 21Wanneer er niets meer te plunderen is, zal het land er uitzien als een kaalgevreten weiland. De schaapskudden en het vee zullen vernietigd zijn en een boer zal zich gelukkig prijzen als hij nog een kalf en twee stuks kleinvee over heeft. 22Maar het overvloedige grasland zal zorgen dat het vee veel melk geeft en de overlevenden zullen leven van de melkproducten en wilde honing. 23In die tijd zullen de voormalige prachtige wijngaarden veranderen in met doornige gewassen begroeide wildernissen. 24Het hele land zal één groot doornenveld zijn, een jachtgebied dat wemelt van de wilde dieren. 25Niemand zal het in zijn hoofd halen de vruchtbare heuvels te betreden, waar eens de beste gewassen groeiden, want alles is daar overwoekerd met dorens en distels. Slechts het vee, de schapen en de geiten zullen daar grazen.’
