What True Worship Is All About
1The Lord told me,
“Shout out loud. Do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Tell my people that they have refused to obey me.
Tell the family of Jacob how much they have sinned.
2Day after day they worship me.
They seem ready and willing to know how I want them to live.
They act as if they were a nation that does what is right.
They act as if they have not turned away from my commands.
They claim to want me to give them fair decisions.
They seem ready and willing to come near and worship me.
3‘We have gone without food,’ they say.
‘Why haven’t you noticed it?
We have made ourselves suffer.
Why haven’t you paid any attention to us?’
“On the day when you fast, you do as you please.
You take advantage of all your workers.
4When you fast, it ends in arguing and fighting.
You hit one another with your fists.
That is an evil thing to do.
The way you are now fasting
keeps your prayers from being heard in heaven.
5Do you think that is the way I want you to fast?
Is it only a time for people to make themselves suffer?
Is it only for people to bow their heads like tall grass bent by the wind?
Is it only for people to lie down in ashes and clothes of mourning?
Is that what you call a fast?
Do you think I can accept that?
6“Here is the way I want you to fast.
“Set free those who are held by chains without any reason.
Untie the ropes that hold people as slaves.
Set free those who are crushed.
Break every evil chain.
7Share your food with hungry people.
Provide homeless people with a place to stay.
Give naked people clothes to wear.
Provide for the needs of your own family.
8Then the light of my blessing will shine on you like the rising sun.
I will heal you quickly.
I will march out ahead of you.
And my glory will follow behind you and guard you.
That’s because I always do what is right.
9You will call out to me for help.
And I will answer you.
You will cry out.
And I will say, ‘Here I am.’
“Get rid of the chains you use to hold others down.
Stop pointing your finger at others as if they had done something wrong.
Stop saying harmful things about them.
10Work hard to feed hungry people.
Satisfy the needs of those who are crushed.
Then my blessing will light up your darkness.
And the night of your suffering will become as bright as the noonday sun.
11I will always guide you.
I will satisfy your needs in a land baked by the sun.
I will make you stronger.
You will be like a garden that has plenty of water.
You will be like a spring whose water never runs dry.
12Your people will rebuild the cities that were destroyed long ago.
And you will build again on the old foundations.
You will be called One Who Repairs Broken Walls.
You will be called One Who Makes City Streets Like New Again.
13“Do not work on the Sabbath day.
Do not do just anything you want to on my holy day.
Make the Sabbath a day you can enjoy.
Honor the Lord’s holy day.
Do not work on it.
Do not do just anything you want to.
Do not talk about things that are worthless.
14Then you will find your joy in me.
I will give you control over the most important places in the land.
And you will enjoy all the good things
in the land I gave your father Jacob.”
The Lord has spoken.
O verdadeiro jejum
1Clamem com uma voz como de trombeta! Denunciem claramente ao meu povo a sua maldade, aos descendentes de Jacob os seus pecados! 2Porque eles pretendem dar uma aparência de piedade, de religiosidade! Vêm todos os dias ao templo e quem os vê parece que estão deleitados a ouvir a leitura das minhas leis, como se quisessem sinceramente obedecer-lhes, como se não desprezassem, de forma alguma, os mandamentos do seu Deus! Julgar-se-ia até que estão ansiosos por cumprir corretamente os preceitos da justiça e até parecem ter vontade de se aproximar de Deus!
3‘Jejuámos na tua presença!’, dizem. ‘Porque é que não ficaste impressionado com isso? Porque não reparaste nos nossos sacrifícios? Porque é que não quiseste ouvir as nossas orações? Fizemos tanta penitência e não te deste conta de nada!’ A razão está em que, no dia do vosso jejum, correm atrás dos vossos próprios desejos e negócios, e continuam também a oprimir os vossos trabalhadores. 4É que jejuais entre rixas e contendas, disputando entre vós, guerreando brutalmente uns contra os outros. Essa espécie de jejuns não tem qualquer efeito comigo, pois assim a vossa voz não se fará ouvir nos céus. 5Alguma vez eu quero que vocês façam esse tipo de penitências e se inclinem até ao chão como juncos batidos pelo vento, ou que se vistam de saco e se cubram de cinza? É a isso que vocês chamam jejum e dia agradável ao Senhor?
6Não! A espécie de jejum que eu quero é esta: libertem os que foram presos injustamente e também o jugo que transportam; libertem os oprimidos e quebrem toda a espécie de opressão. 7Quero que partilhem a vossa comida com os que têm fome e que sejam hospitaleiros para com os que vivem desprotegidos, pobres e desamparados. Que deem roupa aos que têm frio e que não se escondam daqueles que, sendo até vossos familiares, precisam da vossa ajuda. 8Se fizerem estas coisas, Deus fará brilhar sobre vocês a luz da sua própria glória! Dar-vos-á saúde; a vossa vida com Deus será a força do vosso progresso; a vossa justiça tornar-se-á o vosso escudo de proteção e a glória do Senhor vos protegerá à retaguarda! 9Então, quando chamarem, o Senhor responderá. ‘Sim! Estou aqui!’, será a sua rápida resposta.
Tudo o que precisam de fazer é deixar de oprimir o fraco, abandonar a falsidade, não fazer falsas acusações, nem espalhar mentiras! 10Deem de comer ao faminto! Ajudem os necessitados e aflitos! Então a vossa luz brilhará nas trevas e a escuridão à vossa volta será como a brilhante claridade do dia. 11O Senhor vos guiará continuamente e vos encherá de toda a sorte de coisas boas, dando-vos bem-estar e saúde. Serão como um viçoso jardim bem regado com frescas águas; serão como uma fonte jorrando continuamente água abundante. 12Os vossos filhos tornarão a reconstruir as ruínas antigas, edificando sobre velhas fundações do passado; serão conhecidos como o povo que reconstrói as suas muralhas e cidades.
13Se guardarem o santo sábado, não se divertindo nem trabalhando nesse dia, antes honrando-o e tendo prazer nele, como o dia santo do Senhor, honrando o Senhor em tudo o que fizerem, não seguindo os vossos próprios desejos e prazeres, nem mantendo propósitos e conversas ociosas e inúteis, 14então o Senhor será todo o vosso prazer. Eu farei com que cavalguem nas alturas e obtenham a totalidade das bênçãos que prometi a Jacob, vosso pai.” É o Senhor mesmo quem diz isto!
