Jesus Is Greater Than Moses
1Holy brothers and sisters, God chose you to be his people. So keep thinking about Jesus. We embrace him as our apostle and our high priest. 2Moses was faithful in everything he did in the house of God. In the same way, Jesus was faithful to the God who appointed him. 3The person who builds a house has greater honor than the house itself. In the same way, Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses. 4Every house is built by someone. But God is the builder of everything. 5“Moses was faithful as one who serves in the house of God.” (Numbers 12:7) He was a witness to what God would say in days to come. 6But Christ is faithful as the Son over the house of God. And we are his house if we hold tightly to what we are certain about. We must also hold tightly to the hope we boast in.
A Warning Against Unbelief
7The Holy Spirit says,
“Listen to his voice today.
8If you hear it, don’t be stubborn.
You were stubborn when you opposed me.
You did that when you were tested in the desert.
9There your people of long ago tested me.
Yet for 40 years they saw what I did.
10That is why I was angry with them.
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray.
They have not known my ways.’
11So when I was angry, I made a promise.
I said, ‘They will never enjoy the rest I planned for them.’ ” (Psalm 95:7–11)
12Brothers and sisters, make sure that none of you has a sinful heart. Do not let an unbelieving heart turn you away from the living God. 13But build one another up every day. Do it as long as there is still time. Then none of you will become stubborn. You won’t be fooled by sin’s tricks. 14We belong to Christ if we hold tightly to the faith we had at first. But we must hold it tightly until the end. 15It has just been said,
“Listen to his voice today.
If you hear it, don’t be stubborn.
You were stubborn when you opposed me.” (Psalm 95:7,8)
16Who were those who heard and refused to obey? Weren’t they all the people Moses led out of Egypt? 17Who was God angry with for 40 years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned? They died in the desert. 18God promised that those people would never enjoy the rest he planned for them. God gave his word when he made that promise. Didn’t he make that promise to those who didn’t obey? 19So we see that they weren’t able to enter. That’s because they didn’t believe.
Jesus é Superior a Moisés
1Portanto, santos irmãos, participantes do chamado celestial, fixem os seus pensamentos em Jesus, apóstolo e sumo sacerdote que confessamos. 2Ele foi fiel àquele que o havia constituído, assim como Moisés foi fiel em toda a casa de Deus. 3Jesus foi considerado digno de maior glória do que Moisés, da mesma forma que o construtor de uma casa tem mais honra do que a própria casa. 4Pois toda casa é construída por alguém, mas Deus é o edificador de tudo. 5Moisés foi fiel como servo em toda a casa de Deus, dando testemunho do que haveria de ser dito no futuro, 6mas Cristo é fiel como Filho sobre a casa de Deus; e essa casa somos nós, se é que nos apegamos firmemente3.6 Muitos manuscritos trazem firmemente até o fim. à confiança e à esperança da qual nos gloriamos.
Advertência contra a Incredulidade
7Assim, como diz o Espírito Santo:
“Hoje, se vocês ouvirem a sua voz,
8não endureçam o coração,
como na rebelião,
durante o tempo da provação no deserto,
9onde os seus antepassados me tentaram,
pondo-me à prova,
apesar de, durante quarenta anos,
terem visto o que eu fiz.
10Por isso fiquei irado contra aquela geração
e disse: O seu coração está sempre se desviando,
e eles não reconheceram os meus caminhos.
11Assim jurei na minha ira:
Jamais entrarão no meu descanso”3.7-11 Sl 95.7-11.
12Cuidado, irmãos, para que nenhum de vocês tenha coração perverso e incrédulo, que se afaste do Deus vivo. 13Ao contrário, encorajem-se uns aos outros todos os dias, durante o tempo que se chama “hoje”, de modo que nenhum de vocês seja endurecido pelo engano do pecado, 14pois passamos a ser participantes de Cristo, desde que, de fato, nos apeguemos até o fim à confiança que tivemos no princípio. 15Por isso é que se diz:
“Se hoje vocês ouvirem a sua voz,
não endureçam o coração,
como na rebelião”3.15 Sl 95.7,8; também em 4.7..
16Quem foram os que ouviram e se rebelaram? Não foram todos os que Moisés tirou do Egito? 17Contra quem Deus esteve irado durante quarenta anos? Não foi contra aqueles que pecaram, cujos corpos caíram no deserto? 18E a quem jurou que nunca haveriam de entrar no seu descanso? Não foi àqueles que foram desobedientes?3.18 Ou que não creram? 19Vemos, assim, que por causa da incredulidade não puderam entrar.
