Jacob Returns to Bethel
1Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and live there. Build an altar there to honor me. That’s where I appeared to you when you were running away from your brother Esau.”
2So Jacob spoke to his family and to everyone with him. He said, “Get rid of the statues of false gods you have with you. Make yourselves pure by washing and changing your clothes. 3Come, let’s go up to Bethel. There I’ll build an altar to honor God. He answered me when I was in trouble. He’s been with me everywhere I’ve gone.” 4So they gave Jacob all the statues of false gods they had. They also gave him their earrings. Jacob buried those things under the oak tree at Shechem. 5Then Jacob and everyone with him started out. The terror of God fell on the towns all around them. So no one chased them.
6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz. Luz is also called Bethel. It’s in the land of Canaan. 7Jacob built an altar at Luz. He named the place El Bethel. There God made himself known to Jacob when he was running away from his brother.
8Rebekah’s attendant Deborah died. They buried her body under the oak tree outside Bethel. So it was called Allon Bakuth.
9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again. And God blessed him. 10God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob anymore. Your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.
11God said to him, “I am the Mighty God. Have children so that there will be many of you. You will become the father of a nation and a community of nations. Your later family will include kings. 12I am giving you the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac. I will also give it to your children after you.” 13Then God left him at the place where he had talked with him.
14Jacob set up a sacred stone at the place where God had talked with him. He poured out a drink offering on it. He also poured olive oil on it. 15Jacob named the place Bethel. That’s where God had talked with him.
Rachel and Isaac Die
16They moved on from Bethel. Ephrath wasn’t very far away when Rachel began to have a baby. She was having a very hard time of it. 17The woman who helped her saw that she was having problems. So she said to Rachel, “Don’t be afraid. You have another son.” 18But Rachel was dying. As she took her last breath, she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.
19So Rachel died. She was buried beside the road to Ephrath. Ephrath was also called Bethlehem. 20Jacob set up a stone marker over her tomb. To this day, the stone marks the place where Rachel was buried.
21Israel moved on again. He set up his tent beyond Migdal Eder. 22While Israel was living in that area, Reuben went in and slept with Bilhah. She was the concubine of Reuben’s father. And Israel heard about it.
Here are the 12 sons Jacob had.
23Leah was the mother of
Reuben, Jacob’s oldest son.
Her other sons were Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
24The sons of Rachel were
Joseph and Benjamin.
25The sons of Rachel’s female servant Bilhah were
Dan and Naphtali.
26The sons of Leah’s female servant Zilpah were
Gad and Asher.
These were Jacob’s sons. They were born in Paddan Aram.
27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre. Mamre is near Kiriath Arba, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. The place is also called Hebron. 28Isaac lived 180 years. 29Then he took his last breath and died. He was very old when he joined the members of his family who had already died. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Jacob vuelve a Betel
1Dios le dijo a Jacob: «Ponte en marcha, y vete a vivir a Betel. Erige allí un altar al Dios que se te apareció cuando escapabas de tu hermano Esaú».
2Entonces Jacob dijo a su familia y a quienes lo acompañaban: «Deshaceos de todos los dioses extraños que tengáis con vosotros, purificaos y cambiaos de ropa. 3Vámonos a Betel. Allí construiré un altar al Dios que me socorrió cuando estaba yo en peligro, y que me ha acompañado en mi camino».
4Así que le entregaron a Jacob todos los dioses extraños que tenían, junto con los aretes que llevaban en las orejas, y Jacob los enterró a la sombra de la encina que estaba cerca de Siquén. 5Cuando partieron, nadie persiguió a la familia de Jacob, porque un terror divino se apoderó de las ciudades vecinas.
6Fue así como Jacob y quienes lo acompañaban llegaron a Luz, es decir, Betel, en la tierra de Canaán. 7Erigió un altar y llamó a ese lugar El Betel,35:7 En hebreo, El Betel significa Dios de Betel. porque allí se le había revelado Dios cuando escapaba de su hermano Esaú.
8Por esos días murió Débora, la nodriza de Rebeca, y la sepultaron a la sombra de la encina que se encuentra cerca de Betel. Por eso Jacob llamó a ese lugar Elón Bacut.35:8 En hebreo, Elón Bacut significa encina del llanto.
9Cuando Jacob regresó de Padán Aram,35:9 Padán Aram. Es decir, el noroeste de Mesopotamia; también en v. 26. Dios se le apareció otra vez y lo bendijo 10con estas palabras: «Tu nombre es Jacob,35:10 En hebreo, Jacob significa él agarra el talón (en sentido figurado: él suplanta o engaña). pero ya no te llamarás así. De aquí en adelante te llamarás Israel».35:10 En hebreo, Israel significa él lucha con Dios. Y, en efecto, ese fue el nombre que le puso.
11Luego Dios añadió: «Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Sé fecundo y multiplícate. De ti nacerá una nación y una comunidad de naciones, y habrá reyes entre tus vástagos. 12La tierra que les di a Abraham y a Isaac te la doy a ti, y también a tus descendientes». 13Y Dios se alejó del lugar donde había hablado con Jacob.
14Jacob erigió una estela de piedra en el lugar donde Dios le había hablado. Vertió sobre ella una libación, y la ungió con aceite, 15y al lugar donde Dios le había hablado lo llamó Betel.35:15 En hebreo, Betel significa casa de Dios.
Muerte de Raquel y de Isaac
35:23-26 – 1Cr 2:1-2
16Después partieron de Betel. Cuando todavía estaban lejos de Efrata, Raquel dio a luz, pero tuvo un parto muy difícil. 17En el momento más difícil del parto, la partera le dijo: «¡No temas; estás por tener otro varón!» 18No obstante, ella se estaba muriendo, y en sus últimos suspiros alcanzó a llamar a su hijo Benoní,35:18 En hebreo, Benoní significa hijo de mi aflicción o hijo de mi tristeza. pero Jacob, su padre, le puso por nombre Benjamín.35:18 En hebreo, Benjamín significa hijo de mi mano derecha.
19Así murió Raquel, y la sepultaron en el camino que va hacia Efrata, que es Belén. 20Sobre la tumba, Jacob erigió una estela, que hasta el día de hoy señala el lugar donde Raquel fue sepultada.
21Israel siguió su camino y acampó más allá de Migdal Edar. 22Mientras vivía en esa región, Rubén fue y se acostó con Bilhá, la concubina de su padre. Cuando Israel se enteró de esto, se enojó muchísimo.35:22 Cuando Israel se enteró de esto, se enojó muchísimo (LXX); Israel se enteró (TM).
Jacob tuvo doce hijos:
23Los hijos de Lea fueron Rubén, que era el primogénito de Jacob, Simeón, Leví, Judá, Isacar y Zabulón.
24Los hijos de Raquel fueron José y Benjamín.
25Los hijos de Bilhá, la esclava de Raquel, fueron Dan y Neftalí.
26Los hijos de Zilpá, la esclava de Lea, fueron Gad y Aser.
Estos fueron los hijos que tuvo Jacob en Padán Aram.
27Jacob volvió a la casa de su padre Isaac en Mamré, cerca de Quiriat Arbá, es decir, Hebrón, donde también habían vivido Abraham e Isaac. 28Isaac tenía ciento ochenta años 29cuando se reunió con sus antepasados. Era ya muy anciano cuando murió, y lo sepultaron sus hijos Esaú y Jacob.
