Simeon and Levi Kill the Men of Shechem
1Dinah was the daughter Leah had by Jacob. Dinah went out to visit the women of the land. 2Hamor, the Hivite, was the ruler of that area. When his son Shechem saw Dinah, he took her and raped her. 3Then he longed for Jacob’s daughter Dinah. He fell in love with her and spoke tenderly to her. 4Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me that young woman. I want her to be my wife.”
5Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been raped. His sons were in the fields with his livestock. So he did nothing about it until they came home.
6Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. 7Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields. They came as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and very angry. Shechem had done a very terrible thing. He had forced Jacob’s daughter to have sex with him. He had done something that should never be done in Israel.
8But Hamor said to Jacob and his sons, “My son Shechem wants your daughter. Please give her to him to be his wife. 9Let your people and ours get married to each other. Give us your daughters as our wives. You can have our daughters as your wives. 10You can live among us. Here is the land. Live in it. Trade in it. Buy property in it.”
11Then Shechem spoke to Dinah’s father and brothers. He said, “I want to please you. I’ll give you anything you ask for. 12Make the price for the bride as high as you want to. I’ll pay you whatever you ask. Just give me the young woman. I want to marry her.”
13Their sister Dinah had been raped. So Jacob’s sons lied to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14They said to them, “We can’t do it. We can’t give our sister to a man who isn’t circumcised. That would bring shame on us. 15We’ll agree, but only on one condition. You will have to become like us. You will have to circumcise all your males. 16Then we’ll give you our daughters as your wives. And we’ll take your daughters as our wives. We’ll live among you and become one big family with you. 17But if you won’t agree to be circumcised, then we’ll take our sister and go.”
18Their offer seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19The young man was the most honored of all his father’s family. He didn’t lose any time in doing what Dinah’s father and brothers had said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. 20Hamor and his son Shechem went to the city gate. They spoke to the other men there. 21“These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land. Let them trade in it. The land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters. And they can marry ours. 22But they will agree to live with us as one big family only on one condition. All our males must be circumcised, just as they are. 23Won’t their livestock and their property belong to us? Won’t all their animals become ours? So let’s say yes to them. Then they’ll live among us.”
24All the men who went out through the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem. So every male in the city was circumcised.
25Three days later, all of them were still in pain. Then Simeon and Levi took their swords. They were Jacob’s sons and Dinah’s brothers. They attacked the city when the people didn’t expect it. They killed every male. 26They also used their swords to kill Hamor and his son Shechem. Then they took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left. 27Jacob’s other sons found the dead bodies. They robbed the city where their sister had been raped. 28They took the flocks and herds and donkeys. They took everything in the city and in the fields. 29They carried everything away. And they took all the women and children. They took away everything in the houses.
30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me. Now I’m like a very bad smell to the Canaanites and Perizzites who live in this land. There aren’t many of us. They may join together against me and attack me. Then I and my family will be destroyed.”
31But they replied, “Should Shechem have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
Rapto y violación de Dina
1En cierta ocasión Dina, la hija que Jacob tuvo con Lea, salió a visitar a las mujeres del lugar. 2Cuando la vio Siquén, que era hijo de Jamor el heveo, jefe del lugar, la agarró por la fuerza, se acostó con ella y la violó. 3Pero luego se enamoró de ella y trató de ganarse su afecto. 4Entonces dijo a su padre: «Consígueme a esta muchacha para que sea mi esposa».
5Jacob se enteró de que Siquén había deshonrado a su hija Dina, pero como sus hijos estaban en el campo cuidando el ganado, no dijo nada hasta que ellos regresaron.
6Mientras tanto Jamor, el padre de Siquén, salió en busca de Jacob para hablar con él. 7Cuando los hijos de Jacob volvieron del campo y se enteraron de lo sucedido, quedaron muy dolidos y a la vez llenos de ira. Siquén había cometido una ofensa muy grande contra Israel al acostarse con su hija; era algo que nunca debió haber hecho. 8Pero Jamor les dijo:
—Mi hijo Siquén está enamorado de la hermana de ustedes. Por favor, permitan que ella se case con él. 9Háganse parientes nuestros. Intercambiemos nuestras hijas en casamiento. 10Así ustedes podrán vivir entre nosotros y el país quedará a su disposición para que lo habiten, hagan negocios34:10 hagan negocios. Alt. se muevan con libertad. y adquieran terrenos.
11Siquén, por su parte, dijo al padre y a los hermanos de Dina:
—Si ustedes me hallan digno de su favor, yo les daré lo que me pidan. 12Pueden pedirme cuanta dote quieran y exigirme muchos regalos, pero permitan que la muchacha se case conmigo.
13Sin embargo, por el hecho de que su hermana Dina había sido deshonrada, los hijos de Jacob respondieron con engaños a Siquén y a su padre Jamor.
14—Nosotros no podemos hacer algo así —les explicaron—. Sería una vergüenza para todos nosotros entregarle nuestra hermana a un hombre que no está circuncidado. 15Solo aceptaremos con esta condición: que todos los varones entre ustedes se circunciden para que sean como nosotros. 16Entonces sí intercambiaremos nuestras hijas con las de ustedes en casamiento, y viviremos entre ustedes y formaremos un solo pueblo. 17Pero si no aceptan nuestra condición de circuncidarse, nos llevaremos a nuestra hermana34:17 hermana. Lit. hija. y nos iremos de aquí.
18Jamor y Siquén estuvieron de acuerdo con la propuesta; 19y tan enamorado estaba Siquén de la hija de Jacob que no demoró en circuncidarse.
Como Siquén era el hombre más respetado en la familia, 20su padre Jamor lo acompañó hasta la entrada de la ciudad y allí hablaron con todos sus conciudadanos. Les dijeron:
21—Estos hombres se han portado como amigos. Dejen que se establezcan en nuestro país y que lleven a cabo sus negocios aquí, ya que hay suficiente espacio para ellos. Además, nosotros nos podremos casar con sus hijas y ellos con las nuestras. 22Pero ellos aceptan quedarse entre nosotros y formar un solo pueblo, con una sola condición: que todos nuestros varones se circunciden, como lo hacen ellos. 23Aceptemos su condición, para que se queden a vivir entre nosotros. De esta manera su ganado, sus propiedades y todos sus animales serán nuestros.
24Todos los que se reunían a la entrada de la ciudad estuvieron de acuerdo con Jamor y con su hijo Siquén, y fue así como todos los varones fueron circuncidados.
25Al tercer día, cuando los varones todavía estaban muy adoloridos, dos de los hijos de Jacob, Simeón y Leví, hermanos de Dina, empuñaron cada uno su espada y fueron a la ciudad, donde los varones se encontraban desprevenidos, y los mataron a todos. 26También mataron a filo de espada a Jamor y a su hijo Siquén, sacaron a Dina de la casa de Siquén y se retiraron. 27Luego los otros hijos de Jacob llegaron y, pasando sobre los cadáveres, saquearon la ciudad en venganza por la deshonra que había sufrido su hermana. 28Se apropiaron de sus ovejas, vacas y asnos, y de todo lo que había en la ciudad y en el campo. 29Se llevaron todos sus bienes, sus hijos, sus mujeres y saquearon todo lo que encontraron en las casas.
30Entonces Jacob dijo a Simeón y Leví:
—Me han provocado un problema muy serio. De ahora en adelante los cananeos y ferezeos, habitantes de este lugar, me van a odiar. Si ellos se unen contra mí y me atacan, me matarán a mí y a toda mi familia, pues cuento con muy pocos hombres.
31Pero ellos replicaron:
—¿Acaso podíamos dejar que él tratara a nuestra hermana como a una prostituta?
