The New Stone Tablets
1The Lord said to Moses, “Cut out two stone tablets that are just like the first ones. I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2Be ready in the morning. Then come up on Mount Sinai. Meet with me there on top of the mountain. 3No one must come with you. No one must be seen anywhere on the mountain. Not even the flocks and herds must be allowed to eat grass in front of the mountain.”
4So Moses carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Early in the morning he went up Mount Sinai. He carried the two stone tablets in his hands. He did as the Lord had commanded him to do. 5Then the Lord came down in the cloud. He stood there with Moses and announced his name, the Lord. 6As he passed in front of Moses, he called out. He said, “I am the Lord, the Lord. I am the God who is tender and kind. I am gracious. I am slow to get angry. I am faithful and full of love. 7I continue to show my love to thousands of people. I forgive those who do evil. I forgive those who refuse to obey me. And I forgive those who sin. But I do not let guilty people go without punishing them. I cause the sins of the parents to affect their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
8Moses bowed down to the ground at once and worshiped. 9“Lord,” he said, “if you are pleased with me, then go with us. Even though these people are stubborn, forgive the evil things we have done. Forgive our sin. And accept us as your people.”
10Then the Lord said, “I am making a covenant with you. I will do wonderful things in front of all your people. I will do amazing things that have never been done before in any nation in the whole world. The people you live among will see the things that I, the Lord, will do for you. And they will see how wonderful those things really are. 11Obey what I command you today. I will drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites to make room for you. 12Be careful. Do not make a peace treaty with those who live in the land where you are going. They will be a trap to you. 13Break down their altars. Smash their sacred stones. Cut down the poles they use to worship the female god named Asherah. 14Do not worship any other god. The Lord is a jealous God. In fact, his name is Jealous.
15“Be careful not to make a peace treaty with the people living in the land. They commit sin by offering sacrifices to their gods. They will invite you to eat their sacrifices, and you will do it. 16You will choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. And those daughters will commit sin by worshiping their gods. Then they will lead your sons to do the same thing.
17“Do not make any statues of gods.
18“Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Do it at the appointed time in the month of Aviv. You came out of Egypt in that month.
19“Every male animal born first to its mother belongs to me. That includes your livestock. It includes herds and flocks alike. 20Sacrifice a lamb to buy back every male donkey born first to its mother. But if you do not buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back all your oldest sons.
“You must not come to worship me with your hands empty.
21“Do your work in six days. But you must rest on the seventh day. Even when you are plowing your land or gathering your crops, you must rest on the seventh day.
22“Celebrate the Feast of Weeks. Bring the first share of your wheat crop. Celebrate the Feast of Booths. Hold it in the fall. 23Three times a year all your men must come to worship me. I am your Lord and King, the God of Israel. 24I will drive out nations ahead of you. I will increase your territory. Go up three times a year to worship me. While you are doing that, I will keep others from wanting to take any of your land for themselves. I am the Lord your God.
25“Do not include anything made with yeast when you offer me the blood of a sacrifice. You must not keep any of the meat from the sacrifice of the Passover Feast until morning.
26“Bring the best of the first share of your crops to the house of the Lord your God.
“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
27Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down the words I have spoken. I have made a covenant with you and with Israel in keeping with those words.” 28Moses was there with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights. He didn’t eat any food or drink any water. The Lord wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant law. Those words are the Ten Commandments.
The Face of Moses Shines
29Moses came down from Mount Sinai. He had the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. His face was shining because he had spoken with the Lord. But he didn’t realize it. 30Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses. His face was shining. So they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called out to them. So Aaron and all the leaders of the community came to him. And Moses spoke to them. 32After that, all the Israelites came near him. And he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33Moses finished speaking to them. Then he covered his face with a veil. 34But when he would go to speak with the Lord, he would remove the veil. He would keep it off until he came out. Then he would tell the people what the Lord had commanded. 35They would see that his face was shining. So Moses would cover his face with the veil again. He would keep it on until he went in again to speak with the Lord.
Reînnoirea legământului
(Deut. 10:1-5)
1Domnul i‑a zis lui Moise: „Cioplește două table de piatră asemenea celor dintâi, căci Eu voi scrie pe ele cuvintele care erau pe cele dintâi, pe care le‑ai spart. 2Fii gata dis‑de‑dimineață și urcă de dimineață pe muntele Sinai. Să stai acolo înaintea Mea, pe vârful muntelui. 3Să nu urce nimeni cu tine și să nu fie nimeni pe tot muntele. De asemenea, să nu pască nici turme, nici cirezi în fața acelui munte.“
4Moise a cioplit două table de piatră, asemenea celor dintâi, și s‑a urcat pe muntele Sinai dis‑de‑dimineață, așa cum i‑a poruncit Domnul, luând în mână cele două table de piatră. 5Domnul S‑a coborât într‑un nor, a stat cu el acolo și a proclamat Numele de „Domnul“. 6Domnul a trecut prin fața lui și a strigat: „Domnul, Domnul Dumnezeu, este milostiv și plin de har, încet la mânie și plin de îndurare și credincioșie. 7El Își păstrează îndurarea față de mii de generații, iertând fărădelegea, nelegiuirea și păcatul, dar nu lasă nepedepsit pe cel vinovat, ci pedepsește nelegiuirea părinților în copii și în copiii copiilor lor până la a treia și a patra generație7 Vezi nota de la 20:5..“
8Moise s‑a plecat repede la pământ și s‑a închinat.
9Apoi a zis:
– Stăpâne, dacă am găsit bunăvoință înaintea Ta9 Lit.: în ochii Tăi., Te rog să mergi Tu, Stăpâne, cu noi. Într-adevăr, poporul acesta are ceafa tare, dar iartă‑ne nelegiuirea și păcatul și ia‑ne ca moștenire.
10El i‑a răspuns:
– Iată, Eu închei un legământ. Voi face minuni în fața întregului tău popor, cum n‑au mai fost înfăptuite în nicio țară și în niciun neam. Tot poporul care este în jurul tău va vedea lucrarea Domnului, căci prin tine voi face lucruri de temut. 11Ia seama la ceea ce‑ți poruncesc azi! Iată, îi voi alunga dinaintea ta pe amoriți, pe canaaniți, pe hitiți, pe periziți, pe hiviți și pe iebusiți. 12Ai grijă ca nu cumva să închei legământ cu locuitorii țării în care vei intra, ca să nu fie o cursă pentru tine în mijlocul tău. 13Dimpotrivă, să le dărâmați altarele, să le zdrobiți stâlpii sacri și să le tăiați așerele13 Ebr.: așerim, simboluri din lemn ale zeiței canaanite Așera sau ale zeiței Aștoret (numită în greacă Astarte), împlântate pe o înălțime, sub un copac umbros, alături de un altar. Sau: stâlpi sacri; crânguri sacre.. 14Căci tu nu trebuie să te închini niciunui alt dumnezeu, fiindcă Domnul, al Cărui Nume este Gelos, este un Dumnezeu gelos.
15Să nu închei legământ cu locuitorii țării, ca nu cumva, atunci când se vor prostitua înaintea15 Lit.: după. dumnezeilor lor15-16 Este vorba fie de ritualurile care implicau prostituția sacră, foarte răspândită în Canaan, fie de faptul că simpla închinare la idoli este o infidelitate (o prostituție) înaintea lui Dumnezeu. și le vor aduce jertfe, cineva să te invite și pe tine și să mănânci din jertfele lui, 16și ca nu cumva să iei soții dintre fetele lor pentru fiii tăi și astfel, fetele lor, prostituându‑se înaintea dumnezeilor lor, să‑i facă și pe fiii tăi să se prostitueze înaintea acestor dumnezei.
17Să nu‑ți faci dumnezei turnați.
18Să ții Sărbătoarea Azimelor. Șapte zile să mănânci azime, așa cum ți‑am poruncit, la timpul hotărât, în luna Abib18 Vezi nota la 13:4., pentru că în luna Abib ai ieșit din Egipt.
19Primul rod al fiecărui pântec este al Meu. Fiecare mascul din turmele tale, întâii născuți ai vacilor și ai oilor, sunt ai Mei. 20Întâiul născut al măgăriței să‑l răscumperi cu un miel20 Vezi nota la 13:13., iar dacă nu‑l vei răscumpăra, să‑i frângi gâtul20 Vezi nota la 13:13.. Să răscumperi pe toți întâii născuți ai fiilor tăi. Nimeni să nu se înfățișeze înaintea Mea cu mâinile goale.
21Să lucrezi șase zile, iar în a șaptea zi să te odihnești; chiar și în perioada aratului și a secerișului să te odihnești.
22Să ții Sărbătoarea Săptămânilor22 Vezi nota de la 23:16., a primelor roade din secerișul grâului, precum și Sărbătoarea Culesului22 Vezi nota de la 23:16. la sfârșitul anului. 23De trei ori pe an, toți bărbații să se înfățișeze înaintea Stăpânului Domn, Dumnezeul lui Israel. 24Eu voi alunga neamuri dinaintea ta și îți voi lărgi hotarele. Și nimeni nu‑ți va pofti țara când te vei sui să te înfățișezi înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, de trei ori pe an.
25Să nu aduci sângele jertfei Mele împreună cu pâine dospită, iar jertfa de la Sărbătoarea Paștelui să nu rămână până dimineața.
26Primele roade ale pământului să le aduci în Casa Domnului, Dumnezeul tău.

27Apoi Domnul i‑a zis lui Moise:
– Scrie‑ți cuvintele acestea, căci pe temeiul acestor cuvinte am încheiat legământ cu tine și cu Israel.
28Moise a stat acolo cu Domnul timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți, timp în care n‑a mâncat pâine și n‑a băut apă. El a scris pe table cuvintele legământului, Cele Zece Porunci.
Strălucirea feței lui Moise
29Moise a coborât de pe muntele Sinai. A coborât de pe munte cu cele două table ale Mărturiei în mână și nu știa că pielea feței sale strălucea pentru că vorbise cu Dumnezeu. 30Aaron și toți fiii lui Israel s‑au uitat la Moise și iată că pielea feței lui strălucea; și se temeau să se apropie de el. 31Dar Moise i‑a chemat, astfel că Aaron și conducătorii comunității s‑au întors la el, iar Moise le‑a vorbit. 32După aceea, toți fiii lui Israel s‑au apropiat, și el le‑a dat toate poruncile pe care le primise de la Domnul pe muntele Sinai.
33Când Moise a terminat de vorbit cu ei, și‑a așezat un văl pe față. 34Ori de câte ori mergea Moise înaintea Domnului ca să‑I vorbească, își lua vălul de pe față până când ieșea. Iar când ieșea, le spunea fiilor lui Israel ce i s‑a poruncit. 35Fiii lui Israel vedeau că pielea feței lui Moise strălucea. Și Moise își punea din nou vălul pe față, până când intra să vorbească cu Domnul.
