Water Out of the Rock
1The whole community of Israel started out from the Desert of Sin. They traveled from place to place, just as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there wasn’t any water for the people to drink. 2So they argued with Moses. They said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the Lord?”
3But the people were thirsty for water there. So they told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you want us, our children and our livestock to die of thirst?”
4Then Moses cried out to the Lord. He said, “What am I going to do with these people? They are almost ready to kill me by throwing stones at me.”
5The Lord answered Moses. “Go out in front of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel along with you. Take in your hand the walking stick you used when you struck the Nile River. Go. 6I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched. 7Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the Lord. They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Joshua Wins the Battle Over the Amalekites
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I’ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me.”
10So Joshua fought against the Amalekites, just as Moses had ordered. Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites were winning. But every time he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win. 12When Moses’ arms got tired, Aaron and Hur got a stone and put it under him. Then he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset. 13So Joshua destroyed the Amalekite army with swords.
14Then the Lord said to Moses, “This is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.”
15Then Moses built an altar. He called it The Lord Is My Banner. 16He said, “The Amalekites opposed the authority of the Lord. So the Lord will fight against the Amalekites for all time to come.”
Apa din stâncă
(Num. 20:1-13)

Moise le‑a răspuns:
– De ce vă certați cu mine? De ce Îl puneți la încercare2 Același verb este folosit atât în cazul lui Dumnezeu, Care pune la încercare omul/poporul (Gen. 22:1; Ex. 15:25; 16:4), cât și în cazul omului/poporului, care Îl pune la încercare (Îl ispitește) pe Dumnezeu (Ex. 17:2, 7). Vezi și Mt. 4:1; Mc. 1:13 și Lc. 4:2, unde verbul în limba greacă este folosit și în cazul Satanei, care Îl ispitește pe Isus. pe Domnul?
3Poporul stătea acolo însetat și cârtea împotriva lui Moise.
El zicea:
– De ce ne‑ai scos din Egipt? Ca să ne faci să murim de sete cu copiii și vitele noastre?
4Moise a strigat către Domnul, zicând:
– Ce să fac cu poporul acesta? Încă puțin și o să mă omoare cu pietre!
5Domnul i‑a răspuns lui Moise:
– Treci înaintea poporului și ia cu tine câțiva dintre bătrânii lui Israel. Ia în mână toiagul tău cu care ai lovit Nilul și du‑te. 6Iată, Eu voi sta acolo, înaintea ta, la6 Sau: pe. stâncă, în Horeb. Lovește stânca și din ea va ieși apă. Astfel, poporul va putea să bea.
Și Moise a făcut așa sub privirea bătrânilor lui Israel. 7El a pus acelui loc numele „Masa și Meriba“7 Masa și Meriba înseamnă Încercare și Ceartă., pentru că acolo fiii lui Israel s‑au certat și L‑au pus la încercare pe Domnul, zicând: „Este oare Domnul cu noi sau nu?“
Victoria împotriva lui Amalek
8După aceea a venit Amalek și s‑a luptat cu Israel la Refidim. 9Moise i‑a zis lui Iosua: „Alege câțiva oameni dintre noi și ieși! Luptă‑te cu Amalek! Mâine voi sta pe vârful dealului cu toiagul lui Dumnezeu în mâna mea.“ 10Iosua a făcut așa cum i‑a zis Moise și s‑a luptat cu Amalek, în timp ce Moise, Aaron și Hur s‑au urcat pe vârful dealului. 11Atunci când Moise își ținea mâna sus, Israel era mai tare, iar atunci când își lăsa mâna jos, era mai tare Amalek. 12Când mâinile lui Moise au obosit, au luat o piatră și au pus‑o sub el, iar el s‑a așezat pe ea. Apoi Aaron și Hur i‑au sprijinit mâinile, unul de‑o parte, iar altul de cealaltă parte. Și astfel mâinile lui au rămas întinse până la apusul soarelui. 13Iosua l‑a învins pe Amalek și pe poporul acestuia cu ascuțișul sabiei.
14Atunci Domnul i‑a zis lui Moise: „Scrie lucrul acesta într‑o carte ca aducere-aminte și citește‑o în auzul lui Iosua, căci voi șterge amintirea lui Amalek de sub ceruri.“ 15Moise a zidit un altar și i‑a pus numele „Domnul este steagul meu“15 Ebr.: YHWH Nissi, 16zicând: „Pentru că o mână s‑a ridicat spre tronul Domnului,16 Cu referire la mâinile lui Moise, ce au fost ridicate în timpul luptei (17:11). Sensul propoziției este nesigur. Unele traduceri redau: Pentru că o mână s‑a ridicat împotriva tronului Domnului, referindu‑se astfel la Amalek. Domnul va purta război împotriva lui Amalek din generație în generație.“
