The Song of Moses and Miriam
1Here is the song that Moses and the people of Israel sang to the Lord. They said,
“I will sing to the Lord.
He is greatly honored.
He has thrown Pharaoh’s horses and chariot drivers
into the Red Sea.
2The Lord gives me strength and protects me.
He has saved me.
He is my God, I will praise him.
He is my father’s God, and I will honor him.
3The Lord goes into battle.
The Lord is his name.
4He has thrown Pharaoh’s chariots and army
into the Red Sea.
Pharaoh’s best officers
drowned in the sea.
5The deep waters covered them.
They sank to the bottom like a stone.
6“Lord, your right hand
was majestic and powerful.
Lord, your right hand
destroyed your enemies.
7Because of your great majesty,
you threw down those who opposed you.
Your burning anger blazed out.
It burned them up like straw.
8The powerful blast from your nose
piled up the waters.
The rushing waters stood firm like a wall.
The deep waters stood up in the middle of the sea.
9“Your enemies bragged,
‘We will chase Israel and will catch them.
We’ll divide up what we take from them.
We’ll eat them alive.
We’ll pull our swords out.
Our powerful hands will destroy them.’
10But you blew with your breath.
The Red Sea covered your enemies.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.
11“Lord, who among the gods is like you?
Who is like you?
You are majestic and holy.
Your glory fills me with wonder.
You do amazing things.
12You reach out your right hand.
The earth swallows up your enemies.
13“Because your love is faithful,
you will lead the people you have set free.
Because you are so strong,
you will guide them to the holy place where you live.
14The nations will hear about it and tremble.
Pain and suffering will take hold of the Philistines.
15The chiefs of Edom will be terrified.
The leaders of Moab will tremble with fear.
The people of Canaan will melt away.
16Fear and terror will fall on them.
Your powerful arm
will make them as still as a stone.
Then your people will pass by, Lord.
Then the people you created will pass by.
17You will bring them in.
You will plant them on the mountain you gave them.
Lord, you have made that place your home.
Lord, your hands have made your holy place secure.
18“The Lord rules
for ever and ever.”
19Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the Red Sea. The Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the people of Israel walked through the sea on dry ground. 20Aaron’s sister Miriam was a prophet. She took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her. They played tambourines and danced. 21Miriam sang to them,
“Sing to the Lord.
He is greatly honored.
He has thrown Pharaoh’s horses and chariot drivers
into the Red Sea.”
The Waters of Marah and Elim
22Then Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea. They went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert. They didn’t find any water there. 23When they came to Marah, they couldn’t drink its water. It was bitter. That’s why the place is named Marah. 24The people told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, “What are we supposed to drink?”
25Then Moses cried out to the Lord. The Lord showed him a stick. Moses threw it into the water. The water became fit to drink.
There the Lord gave a ruling and instruction for the people. And there he tested them. 26He said, “I am the Lord your God. Listen carefully to me. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands. Obey all my rules. If you do, I will not send on you any of the sicknesses I sent on the Egyptians. I am the Lord who heals you.”
27The people came to Elim. It had 12 springs and 70 palm trees. They camped there near the water.
Moses och Mirjams sång till Herren
1Sedan sjöng Mose och israeliterna denna sång till Herren:
”Jag vill sjunga till Herrens ära,
för högt är han upphöjd.
Han har kastat både häst och ryttare i havet.
2Herren är min styrka
och min sång, han har blivit min räddning.
Han är min Gud,
och jag vill prisa honom.
Han är min fars Gud.
Jag vill upphöja honom.
3Herren är en kämpe,
ja, Herren är hans namn.
4Faraos vagnar och armé
har han kastat i havet.
Faraos ryktbara krigsmän
dränktes i Sävhavets vågor.
5Vattenmassorna dränkte dem,
de sjönk som stenar i djupet.
6Din högra hand, Herre,
har en väldig makt.
Din högra hand
krossade fienden.
7I ditt höga majestät
besegrade du dem
som vände sig mot dig.
Du visade din vrede
och den förtärde dem,
som elden bränner upp gräset.
8Du blåste på vattnet
och det delade sig.
Vågorna reste sig som murar,
stelnade mitt i havet.
9Fienden sa:
’Jag ska förfölja dem och hinna upp dem,
jag ska ta byte och fördela det,
jag ska ta hämnd på dem.
Jag ska dra mitt svärd,
min hand ska förgöra dem.’
10Men du andades på dem,
och havet slog ihop över dem.
De sjönk som bly
i de väldiga vattnen.
11Vem är som du, Herre,
bland alla gudar?
Vem är så majestätisk och helig?
Vem är så fruktansvärd i härlighet?
Vem gör under som du?
12Du räckte ut din hand,
och då svalde jorden dem.
13I din nåd har du lett
det folk du befriade.
Med din makt har du fört det
till din heliga boning.
14Folken hörde det och darrade.
Filistéerna greps av ångest.
15Edoms furstar blev förskräckta.
Moabs mäktiga män darrade.
Kanaans invånare smälte ner av fruktan.
16Skräck och ångest har kommit över dem.
Inför din väldiga arm
stod de förstenade,
medan ditt folk, Herre,
det folk som du har befriat, passerade dem.
17Du leder dem
och planterar dem på ditt eget berg,
på den plats du gjort till din boning, Herre
– i den helgedom, Herre, som dina händer grundlagt.
18Herren ska regera i all evighet.”
19Faraos hästar, vagnar och vagnsförare försökte följa efter genom havet. Men Herren lät havsvattnen falla över dem, medan Israels folk vandrade genom havet på torr mark.
20Profetissan Mirjam, Arons syster, tog sin tamburin och de andra kvinnorna följde henne. De spelade på tamburiner och dansade. 21Mirjam sjöng för dem:
”Sjung till Herrens ära.
Han är högt upphöjd.
Hästar och vagnsförare
har han störtat i havet.”
Prövningen i öknen
(15:22—18:27)
Bittert vatten
22Mose ledde Israels folk vidare från Sävhavet, och de kom ut i öknen Shur och gick där i tre dagar utan att hitta vatten. 23När de kom till Mara, kunde de inte dricka vattnet, för det var bittert. Det var därför platsen fick heta Mara.15:23 Mara betyder besk, bitter.
24Folket började anklaga Mose: ”Vad ska vi dricka?” frågade de. 25Mose ropade då till Herren, och Herren visade honom en bit trä. Mose slängde den i vattnet, och då gick det att dricka.
Det var där han gav lag och rätt åt folket och prövade dem. 26Han sa: ”Om du vill lyda Herrens, din Guds, röst och göra det som är rätt inför honom, följa hans befallningar och hålla hans bud, så ska jag låta dig slippa alla de sjukdomar jag lade på egypterna, för jag är Herren din läkare.” 27Sedan kom de till Elim, där det fanns tolv källor och sjuttio palmer, och där vid vattnet slog de läger.
