There Is a Time for Everything
1There is a time for everything.
There’s a time for everything that is done on earth.
2There is a time to be born.
And there’s a time to die.
There is a time to plant.
And there’s a time to pull up what is planted.
3There is a time to kill.
And there’s a time to heal.
There is a time to tear down.
And there’s a time to build up.
4There is a time to weep.
And there’s a time to laugh.
There is a time to be sad.
And there’s a time to dance.
5There is a time to scatter stones.
And there’s a time to gather them.
There is a time to embrace someone.
And there’s a time not to embrace.
6There is a time to search.
And there’s a time to stop searching.
There is a time to keep.
And there’s a time to throw away.
7There is a time to tear.
And there’s a time to mend.
There is a time to be silent.
And there’s a time to speak.
8There is a time to love.
And there’s a time to hate.
There is a time for war.
And there’s a time for peace.
9What do workers get for their hard work? 10I’ve seen the heavy load God has put on human beings. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also given people a sense of who he is. But they can’t completely understand what God has done from beginning to end. 12People should be happy and do good while they live. I know there’s nothing better for them to do than that. 13Each of them should eat and drink. People should be satisfied with all their hard work. That is God’s gift to them. 14I know that everything God does will last forever. Nothing can be added to it. And nothing can be taken from it. God does that so people will have respect for him.
15Everything that now exists has already been.
And what is coming has existed before.
God will judge those who treat others badly.
16Here’s something else I saw on earth.
Where people should be treated right,
they are treated wrong.
Where people should be treated fairly,
they are treated unfairly.
17I said to myself,
“God will judge
godly and sinful people alike.
He has a time for every act.
He has a time to judge everything that is done.”
18I also said to myself, “God tests human beings. He does this so they can see that in certain ways they are like animals. 19Surely what happens to animals happens to people too. Death waits for people and animals alike. People die, just as animals do. All of them have the same breath. People don’t have any advantage over animals. Nothing has any meaning. 20People and animals go to the same place. All of them come from dust. And all of them return to dust. 21Who can know whether the spirit of a person goes up? Who can tell whether the spirit of an animal goes down into the earth?”
22So a person should enjoy their work. That’s what God made them for. I saw that there’s nothing better for them to do than that. After all, who can show them what will happen after they are gone?
Allt har sin tid
1Allt har sin tid,
varje sak under himlen sin tidpunkt:
2En tid att födas och en tid att dö,
en tid att plantera och en tid att rycka upp det planterade,
3en tid att döda och en tid att hela,
en tid att riva ner och en tid att bygga upp,
4en tid att gråta och en tid att skratta,
en tid att sörja och en tid att dansa,
5en tid att kasta stenar och en tid att samla stenar,
en tid att kramas och en tid att låta bli att kramas,
6en tid att söka och en tid att tappa bort,
en tid att behålla och en tid att kasta bort,
7en tid att riva sönder och en tid att sy ihop,
en tid att vara tyst och en tid att tala,
8en tid att älska och en tid att hata,
en tid för krig och en tid för fred.
9Vad får då arbetaren ut av sin möda? 10Jag har sett den börda som Gud lagt på människan. 11Allt har han gjort skönt i sin tid. Också evigheten har han lagt i deras hjärtan,3:11 Det är osäkert om det är människans evighetslängtan som åsyftas, eller om satsen hör ihop med den föregående och ska tolkas som att allt det sköna Gud gjort ska bestå för evigt. men människan kan ändå inte fatta Guds gärningar från början till slut. 12Jag insåg att det inte fanns något bättre för dem än att vara glada och göra gott under sitt liv. 13Och var och en som kan äta och dricka och finna tillfredsställelse i all sin möda har det också som en gåva från Gud. 14Jag vet att vad Gud gör består för evigt. Ingenting kan läggas till eller dras ifrån. Så har Gud gjort för att man ska frukta honom.
15Det som finns har redan varit,
det som ska komma har redan funnits.
Gud kallar fram det förflutna.
Meningslöshet och ondska finns överallt
16Dessutom såg jag under solen att på rättsplatsen satt orätt, på rättfärdighetens plats orätt.
17Jag sa för mig själv:
”Gud dömer både den rättfärdige och den gudlöse.
För det finns en tid för allt som sker och för varje handling.”
18Jag sa vidare för mig själv: ”Så är det för människornas skull. Gud prövar dem, för att de ska inse att de inte är bättre än djuren. 19Människor och djur har samma öde. Den ene dör liksom den andre, och båda har samma livsande. Människan har inget företräde framför djuren. Allting är meningslöst.
20Alla går mot samma mål –
till den jord som de har kommit ifrån
måste de vända tillbaka.
21Vem vet om människans ande stiger uppåt och djurens ande far ner i jorden?”
22Jag förstod att det inte fanns något bättre för människan än att hon gläder sig över sitt arbete, för det är hennes del. Vem kan vägleda henne till att se vad som ska komma efter henne?
