Love the Lord Your God
1The Lord your God has directed me to teach you his commands, rules and laws. Obey them in the land you will take over when you go across the Jordan River. 2Then you, your children and their children after them will honor the Lord your God as long as you live. Obey all his rules and commands I’m giving you. If you do, you will enjoy long life. 3Israel, listen to me. Make sure you obey me. Then things will go well with you. The number of your people will increase greatly in a land that has plenty of milk and honey. That’s what the Lord, the God of your parents, promised you.
4Israel, listen to me. The Lord is our God. The Lord is the one and only God. 5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength. 6The commandments I give you today must be in your hearts. 7Make sure your children learn them. Talk about them when you are at home. Talk about them when you walk along the road. Speak about them when you go to bed. And speak about them when you get up. 8Write them down and tie them on your hands as a reminder. Also tie them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses. Also write them on your gates.
10The Lord your God will bring you into the land of Canaan. He gave his word. He promised he would give the land to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The land has large, wealthy cities you didn’t build. 11It has houses filled with all kinds of good things you didn’t provide. The land has wells you didn’t dig. And it has vineyards and groves of olive trees you didn’t plant. You will have plenty to eat. 12But be careful that you don’t forget the Lord. Remember that he brought you out of Egypt. That’s the land where you were slaves.
13Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve. When you make promises, do so in his name. 14Don’t serve the gods of the nations around you. 15The Lord your God is among you. He wants you to worship only him. If you worship other gods, God will be very angry with you. And he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16Don’t test the Lord your God as you did at Massah. 17Be sure to obey the Lord’s commands. Obey the terms and rules he has given you. 18Do what is right and good in the Lord’s eyes. Then things will go well with you. You will go in and take over the land. It’s the good land the Lord promised to your people of long ago. 19You will drive out all your enemies to make room for you. That’s what the Lord said would happen.
20Later on, your child might ask you, “What is the meaning of the terms, rules and laws the Lord our God has commanded you to obey?” 21If they do ask you, tell them, “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. But the Lord used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt. 22With our own eyes we saw the Lord send amazing signs. They were great and terrible. He sent them on Egypt and Pharaoh and everyone in his house. 23But the Lord brought us out of Egypt. He planned to bring us into the land of Canaan and give it to us. It’s the land he promised to our people of long ago. 24The Lord our God commanded us to obey all his rules. He commanded us to honor him. If we do, we will always succeed and be kept alive. That’s what is happening today. 25We must make sure we obey the whole law in the sight of the Lord our God. That’s what he has commanded us to do. If we obey his law, we’ll be doing what he requires of us.”

1Acestea sunt poruncile, hotărârile și judecățile pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, mi‑a poruncit să vă învăț să le împliniți în țara pe care o veți stăpâni, 2ca să te temi de Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, atât tu, cât și fiii și nepoții tăi, în toate zilele vieții tale, păzind toate hotărârile și poruncile pe care ți le poruncesc, și ca să ți se înmulțească zilele. 3Ascultă, Israel, și veghează să le împlinești, ca să‑ți meargă bine și să vă înmulțiți mult, așa cum ți‑a promis Domnul, Dumnezeul părinților tăi, în țara în care curge lapte și miere.
4Ascultă, Israel! Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, este singurul Domn.4 Sau: Domnul este Dumnezeul nostru, Domnul este unul. 5Să‑L iubești pe Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, cu toată inima ta, cu tot sufletul tău și cu toată puterea ta. 6Iar cuvintele acestea, pe care ți le poruncesc astăzi, să le păstrezi în inima ta. 7Să le întipărești în mintea copiilor tăi și să vorbești despre ele când vei fi acasă sau în călătorie, când te vei culca sau când te vei trezi. 8Să ți le legi de mână ca semn de aducere-aminte și să‑ți fie ca niște bentițe8 Interpretarea literală a dus mai târziu la apariția filacterelor, cutiuțe din piele purtate pe frunte și pe brațul stâng, conținând, pe bucăți de pergament, patru paragrafe biblice: Ex. 13:1-10, 11-16; Deut. 6:4-9; 11:13-21. între ochi. 9Să le scrii pe stâlpii ușilor caselor tale și pe porțile tale.
10Când Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, te va duce în țara pe care a promis‑o prin jurământ, părinților tăi, Avraam, Isaac și Iacov, și‑ți va da cetăți mari și bune, pe care nu tu le‑ai construit, 11case pline cu tot felul de bunuri, pe care nu tu le‑ai umplut, puțuri pe care nu tu le‑ai săpat, vii și măslini pe care nu tu i‑ai plantat, atunci când vei mânca și te vei sătura, 12ai grijă ca nu cumva să uiți de Domnul, Care te‑a scos din țara Egiptului, din casa robilor.
13Să te temi de Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Lui să‑I slujești și în Numele Lui să juri. 14Să nu vă duceți după alți dumnezei, dintre dumnezeii popoarelor care sunt în jurul vostru, 15fiindcă Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Care este în mijlocul tău, este un Dumnezeu gelos, iar mânia Lui s‑ar aprinde împotriva ta și te‑ar nimici de pe fața pământului. 16Să nu‑L puneți la încercare16 Același verb este folosit atât în cazul lui Dumnezeu, Care pune la încercare omul/poporul (Gen. 22:1; Ex. 15:25; 16:4), cât și în cazul omului/poporului, care Îl pune la încercare (Îl ispitește) pe Dumnezeu (Ex. 17:2, 7). Vezi și Mt. 4:1; Mc. 1:13 și Lc. 4:2, unde verbul în limba greacă este folosit și în cazul Satanei, care Îl ispitește pe Isus. pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, așa cum L‑ați încercat la Masa. 17Să păziți cu atenție poruncile Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, mărturiile și hotărârile pe care vi le‑a dat. 18Să faci ce este drept și bine în ochii Domnului, ca să‑ți meargă bine și să intri în stăpânirea acelei țări bune pe care El a promis‑o, prin jurământ, părinților tăi 19și astfel să‑i izgonești dinaintea ta pe toți dușmanii tăi, după cum a spus Domnul.
20Când fiul tău te va întreba într‑o zi: «Ce înseamnă aceste mărturii, hotărâri și judecăți, pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, vi le‑a poruncit?», 21să‑i răspunzi fiului tău astfel: «Noi eram robi ai lui Faraon în Egipt, iar Domnul ne‑a scos din Egipt cu mână puternică. 22Înaintea ochilor noștri Domnul a făcut semne, minuni mari și dezastre împotriva Egiptului, împotriva lui Faraon și a întregii lui case. 23El ne‑a scos de acolo ca să ne ducă în țara pe care a promis‑o prin jurământ părinților noștri. 24Domnul ne‑a poruncit să împlinim toate aceste hotărâri și să ne temem de Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, ca să ne fie bine în toate zilele și să ne țină în viață, așa cum se vede în ziua aceasta. 25Iar dacă vom avea grijă să împlinim toate poruncile acestea înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru, așa cum ne‑a poruncit El, aceasta va fi dreptate pentru noi.»
