The Altar on Mount Ebal
1Moses and the elders of Israel gave commands to the people. They said, “Obey all the commands we’re giving you today. 2You will go across the Jordan River. You will enter the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you do, set up some large stones. Put a coat of plaster on them. 3Write all the words of this law on them. Do it when you have crossed over into the land the Lord your God is giving you. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. The Lord is the God of your people of long ago. He promised you that you would enter the land. 4After you have gone across the Jordan, set up those stones on Mount Ebal. Put a coat of plaster on them. We’re commanding you today to do that. 5Build an altar there to honor the Lord your God. Make it out of stones. Don’t use any iron tool on them. 6Use stones you find in the fields to build his altar. Then offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. 7Sacrifice friendship offerings there. Eat them and be filled with joy in the sight of the Lord your God. 8You must write all the words of this law on the stones you have set up. Write the words very clearly.”
Curses for Not Obeying the Lord
9Then Moses and the priests, who are Levites, spoke to all the Israelites. They said, “Israel, be quiet! Listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God. 10Obey him. Obey his commands and rules that we’re giving you today.”
11Here are the commands Moses gave the people that same day.
12You will go across the Jordan River. When you do, six tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people. Those tribes are Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. 13The other six tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to announce some curses. Those tribes are Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.
14The Levites will speak to all the Israelites in a loud voice. The Levites will say,
15“May anyone who makes a statue of a god and sets it up in secret be under the Lord’s curse. That statue is made by a skilled worker. And the Lord hates it.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
16“May anyone who brings shame on their father or mother be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
17“May anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
18“May anyone who leads blind people down the wrong road be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
19“May anyone who treats unfairly outsiders, widows, and children whose fathers have died be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
20“May anyone who sleeps with his stepmother be under the Lord’s curse. That man brings shame on his father by doing that.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
21“May anyone who has sex with animals be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
22“May anyone who sleeps with his sister be under the Lord’s curse. It doesn’t matter whether she is his full sister or his half sister.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
23“May anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
24“May anyone who kills their neighbor secretly be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
25“May anyone who accepts money to kill someone who isn’t guilty of doing anything wrong be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
26“May anyone who doesn’t honor the words of this law by obeying them be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
Ang Altar sa Bundok ng Ebal
1Pagkatapos, inutusan nila Moises at ng mga tagapamahala ng Israel ang mga mamamayan, “Sundin ninyong lahat ang mga utos na ibinibigay ko sa inyo sa araw na ito. 2Kapag nakatawid na kayo sa Jordan, doon sa lupaing ibinibigay sa inyo ng Panginoon na inyong Dios, magtumpok kayo ng malalaking bato, at pahiran ninyo ang palibot nito ng apog. 3Isulat ninyo sa mga batong ito ang lahat ng kautusan kapag nakapasok na kayo sa maganda at masaganang lupain27:3 maganda at masaganang lupain: sa literal, lupain na dumadaloy ang gatas at pulot. na ibinibigay sa inyo ng Panginoon na inyong Dios, ang Dios ng inyong mga ninuno, ayon sa ipinangako niya sa inyo. 4Kapag nakatawid na kayo sa Jordan, itayo ninyo ang mga batong ito sa Bundok ng Ebal, ayon sa iniutos ko sa inyo sa araw na ito, at pahiran ninyo ng apog ang palibot nito. 5Pagkatapos, gumawa kayo roon ng batong altar para sa Panginoon na inyong Dios. Huwag kayong gagamit ng anumang kagamitang bakal sa pagtatabas nito. 6Ang mga bato na gagawin ninyong altar ay dapat hindi pa natabasan. Pagkatapos, maghandog kayo sa altar na ito ng mga handog na sinusunog para sa Panginoon na inyong Dios. 7Maghandog din kayo ng handog para sa mabuting relasyon sa Panginoon at kainin ninyo ito roon, at magsaya kayo sa presensya ng Panginoon na inyong Dios. 8At isulat ninyo nang malinaw ang mga kautusan ng Dios sa mga batong pinahiran ninyo ng apog.” 9Sinabi pa ni Moises at ng mga pari na mga Levita sa lahat ng Israelita, “Makinig kayo, O mga mamamayan ng Israel! Sa araw na ito, naging mamamayan na kayo ng Panginoon na inyong Dios. 10Kaya sundin ninyo ang Panginoon na inyong Dios at tuparin ang lahat ng utos at tuntunin niyang ibinibigay ko sa inyo ngayon.”
Ang mga Sumpa
11Nang araw na iyon, iniutos ni Moises sa mga tao, 12“Kapag nakatawid na kayo sa Jordan, ito ang mga angkan na tatayo sa Bundok ng Gerizim para basbasan ang mga tao: ang lahi nina Simeon, Levi, Juda, Isacar, Jose at Benjamin. 13At ito ang mga lahi na tatayo sa Bundok ng Ebal para sumpain ang mga tao: ang lahi nina Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan at Naftali.
14“Ang mga Levita naman ay sisigaw nang malakas:
15“Sumpain ang taong gagawa ng anumang mga dios-diosan na gawa sa bato o tanso at sasambahin ito kahit palihim. Sapagkat kinasusuklaman ng Panginoon ang dios-diosang ginawa ng tao.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”27:15 Amen: Ang ibig sabihin, Siya nawa.
16“Sumpain ang taong hindi gumagalang sa kanyang magulang.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
17“Sumpain ang taong nagnakaw ng lupain ng kanyang kapwa sa pamamagitan ng paglilipat ng muhon ng lupain nito.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
18“Sumpain ang taong nagliligaw ng bulag sa daan.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
19“Sumpain ang taong hindi nagbibigay ng hustisya sa mga dayuhan, sa mga ulila at sa mga biyuda.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
20“Sumpain ang taong nakikipagtalik sa asawa ng kanyang ama, dahil ipinapahiya niya ang kanyang ama.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
21“Sumpain ang taong nakikipagtalik sa anumang hayop.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
22“Sumpain ang taong nakikipagtalik sa kanyang kapatid na babae, kapatid man niya ito sa ama o sa ina.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
23“Sumpain ang taong nakikipagtalik sa kanyang biyenang babae.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
24“Sumpain ang taong pumatay ng kanyang kapwa kahit walang nakakaalam.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
25“Sumpain ang taong tumatanggap ng suhol para pumatay ng inosenteng tao.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
26“Sumpain ang tao na hindi susunod o gagawa sa lahat ng utos na ito.” At sasagot ang lahat ng tao, “Amen!”
