Mourn and Turn Back to the Lord
1People of Israel, listen to the Lord’s message. Hear my song of sadness about you. I say,
2“The people of Israel have fallen.
They will never get up again.
They are deserted in their own land.
No one can lift them up.”
3Here is what the Lord and King says to Israel.
“A thousand soldiers will march out from a city.
But only a hundred will return.
A hundred soldiers will march out from a town.
But only ten will come back.”
4The Lord speaks to the people of Israel. He says,
“Look to me and live.
5Do not look to Bethel.
Do not go to Gilgal.
Do not travel to Beersheba.
The people of Gilgal will be taken away as prisoners.
Nothing will be left of Bethel.”
6Israel, look to the Lord and live.
If you don’t, he will sweep through
the tribes of Joseph like a fire.
It will burn everything up.
And Bethel won’t have anyone to put it out.
7There are people among you who turn what is fair into something bitter.
They throw down to the ground what is right.
8The Lord made the Pleiades and Orion.
He turns midnight into sunrise.
He makes the day fade into night.
He sends for the waters in the clouds.
Then he pours them out on the surface of the land.
His name is the Lord.
9With a flash of light he destroys places of safety.
He tears down cities
that have high walls around them.
10There are people among you who hate anyone who stands for justice in court.
They hate those who tell the truth.
11You make poor people pay tax on their straw.
You also tax their grain.
So, even though you have built stone houses,
you won’t live in them.
You have planted fruitful vineyards.
But you won’t drink the wine they produce.
12I know how many crimes you have committed.
You have sinned far too much.
Among you are people who crush those who have done no wrong.
They accept money from people who want special favors.
They take away the rights of poor people in the courts.
13So those who are wise keep quiet in times like these.
That’s because the times are evil.
14Look to what is good, not to what is evil.
Then you will live.
And the Lord God who rules over all
will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15Hate evil and love good.
Do what is fair in the courts.
Perhaps the Lord God who rules over all
will have mercy on you.
After all, you are the only ones left
in the family line of Joseph.
16The Lord God rules over all. The Lord says,
“People will weep in all the streets.
They will be very sad in every market place.
Even farmers will be told to cry loudly.
People will mourn for the dead.
17Workers will cry in all the vineyards.
That’s because I will punish you,”
says the Lord.
The Day of the Lord Is Coming
18How terrible it will be for you
who long for the day of the Lord!
Why do you want it to come?
That day will be dark, not light.
19It will be like a man running away from a lion
only to meet a bear.
He enters his house and rests his hand on a wall
only to be bitten by a snake.
20The day of the Lord will be dark, not light.
It will be very black.
There won’t be a ray of sunlight anywhere.
21The Lord says,
“I hate your holy feasts.
I can’t stand them.
Your gatherings stink.
22You bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings.
But I will not accept them.
You bring your best friendship offerings.
But I will not even look at them.
23Take the noise of your songs away!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24I want you to treat others fairly.
So let fair treatment roll on
just as a river does!
Always do what is right.
Let right living flow along
like a stream that never runs dry!
25“People of Israel, did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
for 40 years in the desert?
26Yes. But you have honored the place
where your king worshiped other gods.
You have carried the stands
the statues of your gods were on.
You have lifted up the banners
of the stars you worship as gods.
You made all those things for yourselves.
27So I will send you away
as prisoners beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord.
His name is God Who Rules Over All.
Kommt endlich zu mir zurück!
1Ihr Israeliten, hört die Totenklage, die ich über euch anstimme:
2»Gefallen ist mein Volk Israel, es gleicht einer jungen Frau, die gestürzt ist und der niemand aufhilft. Leblos liegt sie am Boden, nie mehr wird sie sich erheben.«
3Denn so spricht Gott, der Herr: »Wenn aus einer eurer Städte tausend Männer in den Krieg ziehen, kehren nur hundert zurück, und wenn hundert in den Kampf gehen, bleiben nur zehn davon übrig! 4Ich, der Herr, fordere euch Israeliten auf: Kommt zu mir zurück, dann bleibt ihr am Leben! 5Reist nicht mehr nach Beerscheba, um dort zu opfern, besucht auch nicht mehr die Heiligtümer in Gilgal und Bethel. Denn die Einwohner von Gilgal werden in die Gefangenschaft geführt, und Bethel wird zum Unglücksort.5,5 Die Prophezeiung über Gilgal ist im Hebräischen ein Wortspiel, die Prophezeiung über Bethel (»Haus Gottes«) spielt auf die ironische Abänderung des Namens zu Bet-Awen (»Haus des Unheils«) an, die sich bei Hosea findet. Vgl. Hosea 4,15; 5,8; 10,5.«
6Ja, kehrt zum Herrn zurück, dann werdet ihr leben! Sonst bekommt ihr Nachkommen von Josef seinen Zorn zu spüren. Er wütet wie ein loderndes Feuer, das sich immer weiter ausbreitet, und wenn es Bethel erreicht hat, kann niemand es dort löschen.
Ihr tretet das Recht mit Füßen!
7Ihr treibt mit der Gerechtigkeit Schindluder5,7 Wörtlich: verwandelt Gerechtigkeit in Wermut. – Ähnlich auch in Kapitel 6,12., ihr tretet das Recht mit Füßen!
8Gott hat das Siebengestirn und den Orion geschaffen. Nach der Nacht lässt er einen neuen Tag anbrechen, und Licht verwandelt er wieder in Finsternis. Er ruft das Wasser aus dem Meer, und schon ergießt es sich auf die Erde. Sein Name ist »der Herr«! 9Blitzschnell vernichtet er die Mächtigen und macht ihre Festungen dem Erdboden gleich.
10Gott sagt: »Ihr hasst jeden, der vor Gericht für das Recht eintritt, und wer die Wahrheit sagt, den verabscheut ihr. 11Von den Ärmsten nehmt ihr Pachtgeld5,11 Oder: Auf den Ärmsten tretet ihr herum. und verlangt auch noch Getreideabgaben. Darum macht euch auf die Strafe gefasst: Ihr habt euch zwar prachtvolle Häuser aus behauenen Steinen gebaut, doch ihr werdet nicht darin wohnen! Ihr habt euch herrliche Weingärten angelegt, doch ihr werdet keinen Wein daraus trinken! 12Ja, ich weiß, wie viele Verbrechen ihr begangen habt und wie groß eure Schuld ist. Ehrliche Menschen bringt ihr in Bedrängnis, ihr nehmt Bestechungsgelder an und lasst die Armen vor Gericht nicht zu ihrem Recht kommen. 13Wer klug ist, der schweigt in dieser schlimmen Zeit.«
14Setzt euch für das Gute ein, allem Bösen aber kehrt den Rücken! Dann werdet ihr leben, und der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, steht euch bei, so wie ihr es ja immer behauptet. 15Ja, hasst das Böse, liebt das Gute! Verhelft vor Gericht jedem zu seinem Recht! Vielleicht erbarmt sich der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, doch noch über euch, die ihr von Josefs Nachkommen übrig geblieben seid.
16So spricht der Herr über alles, der allmächtige Gott: »Auf allen Plätzen und Straßen wird man lautes Klagen und Jammergeschrei hören. Sogar die Bauern holt man vom Feld, damit sie ebenso wie die Klageweiber die Toten beweinen. 17In den Weinbergen wird dann Trauer statt Freude herrschen. Denn ich, der Herr, werde durchs Land schreiten und euch zur Rechenschaft ziehen. Mein Wort gilt!«
Frommer Selbstbetrug
18Wehe euch, die ihr euch wünscht: »Wenn nur der Tag schon da wäre, an dem der Herr eingreift!« Glaubt ihr eigentlich, dass dieser Tag euch Licht bringen wird? Nein, in tiefste Dunkelheit werdet ihr gestoßen! 19Es ergeht euch wie einem Mann, der vor dem Löwen flieht und dabei einem Bären in den Weg läuft. Selbst wenn er da noch mit heiler Haut davonkommt und sich zu Hause erschöpft an die Wand stützt – dann beißt ihn dort eine Schlange in die Hand!
20Ja, der Gerichtstag des Herrn bringt euch kein Licht, sondern Dunkelheit, schwarz wie die Nacht wird er sein!
21Gott sagt: »Ich hasse eure Feiern, geradezu widerwärtig sind sie mir, eure Opferfeste verabscheue ich. 22Eure Brand- und Speiseopfer nehme ich nicht an, und wenn ihr Tiere mästet, um sie mir darzubringen, ist mir das völlig gleichgültig. 23Eure lauten Lieder kann ich nicht mehr hören, verschont mich mit eurem Harfengeklimper. 24Setzt euch lieber für die Gerechtigkeit ein! Das Recht soll das Land durchströmen wie ein nie versiegender Fluss.
25Ihr Israeliten, als ihr vierzig Jahre in der Wüste umhergezogen seid, habt ihr mir da Schlachtopfer und Speiseopfer dargebracht? 26Habt ihr nicht schon damals die Figuren eures Himmelskönigs Sakkut und eures Sternengottes Kewan herumgetragen, die ihr euch selbst gemacht habt? 27Darum lasse ich euch in die Gefangenschaft ziehen, noch weit über Damaskus hinaus! Mein Wort gilt, denn ich bin der Herr; ›allmächtiger Gott‹ – so lautet mein Name!«
