Paul Goes to Ephesus
1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road to Ephesus. When he arrived, he found some believers there. 2He asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?”
“No,” they answered. “We haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4Paul said, “John baptized people, calling them to turn away from their sins. He told them to believe in the one who was coming after him. Jesus is that one.” 5After hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6Paul placed his hands on them. Then the Holy Spirit came on them. They spoke in languages they had not known before. They also prophesied. 7There were about 12 men in all.
8Paul entered the synagogue. There he spoke boldly for three months. He gave good reasons for believing the truth about God’s kingdom. 9But some of them wouldn’t listen. They refused to believe. In public they said evil things about the Way of Jesus. So Paul left them. He took the believers with him. Each day he talked with people in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10This went on for two years. So all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Asia Minor heard the word of the Lord.
11God did amazing miracles through Paul. 12Even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to those who were sick. When this happened, their sicknesses were healed and evil spirits left them.
13Some Jews went around driving out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus to set free those who were controlled by demons. They said, “In Jesus’ name I command you to come out. He is the Jesus that Paul is preaching about.” 14Seven sons of Sceva were doing this. Sceva was a Jewish chief priest. 15One day the evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus. And I know about Paul. But who are you?” 16Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on Sceva’s sons. He overpowered them all. He gave them a terrible beating. They ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17The Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus heard about this. They were all overcome with fear. They held the name of the Lord Jesus in high honor. 18Many who believed now came and openly admitted what they had done. 19A number of those who had practiced evil magic brought their scrolls together. They set them on fire out in the open. They added up the value of the scrolls. The scrolls were worth more than someone could earn in two lifetimes. 20The word of the Lord spread everywhere. It became more and more powerful.
21After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem. He went through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been to Jerusalem,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.” 22He sent Timothy and Erastus, two of his helpers, to Macedonia. But he stayed a little longer in Asia Minor.
Trouble in Ephesus
23At that time many people became very upset about the Way of Jesus. 24There was a man named Demetrius who made things out of silver. He made silver models of the temple of the goddess Artemis. He brought in a lot of business for the other skilled workers there. 25One day he called them together. He also called others who were in the same kind of business. “My friends,” he said, “you know that we make good money from our work. 26You have seen and heard what this fellow Paul is doing. He has talked to large numbers of people here in Ephesus. Almost everywhere in Asia Minor he has led people away from our gods. He says that the gods made by human hands are not gods at all. 27Our work is in danger of losing its good name. People’s faith in the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be weakened. Now she is worshiped all over Asia Minor and the whole world. But soon she will be robbed of her greatness.”
28When they heard this, they became very angry. They began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29Soon people were making trouble in the whole city. They all rushed into the theater. They dragged Gaius and Aristarchus along with them. These two men had come with Paul from Macedonia. 30Paul wanted to appear in front of the crowd. But the believers wouldn’t let him. 31Some of the officials in Asia Minor were friends of Paul. They sent him a message, begging him not to go into the theater.
32The crowd didn’t know what was going on. Some were shouting one thing and some another. Most of the people didn’t even know why they were there. 33The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front. They tried to tell him what to say. But he motioned for them to be quiet. He was about to give the people reasons for his actions. 34But then they realized that he was a Jew. So they all shouted the same thing for about two hours. “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” they yelled.
35The city clerk quieted the crowd down. “People of Ephesus!” he said. “The city of Ephesus guards the temple of the great Artemis. The whole world knows this. They know that Ephesus guards her statue, which fell from heaven. 36These facts can’t be questioned. So calm down. Don’t do anything foolish. 37These men haven’t robbed any temples. They haven’t said evil things against our female god. But you have brought them here anyhow. 38Demetrius and the other skilled workers may feel they have been wronged by someone. Let them bring charges. The courts are open. We have our governors. 39Is there anything else you want to bring up? Settle it in a court of law. 40As it is, we are in danger of being charged with a crime. We could be charged with causing all this trouble today. There is no reason for it. So we wouldn’t be able to explain what has happened.” 41After he said this, he sent the people away.
I convertiti ricevono lo Spirito Santo
1Mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraverso le regioni dellʼaltopiano, giunse ad Efeso, dove trovò diversi discepoli.
2«Avete ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, quando avete creduto?» chiese loro.
«No», risposero, «non sappiamo neppure che ci sia uno Spirito Santo…»
3«Allora che battesimo avete ricevuto?» chiese di nuovo Paolo. Ed essi: «Il battesimo di Giovanni».
4Allora Paolo spiegò loro: «Quello di Giovanni era un battesimo per dimostrare il desiderio di voler rinunciare al peccato e di volgersi a Dio, ma quelli che lʼhanno ricevuto devono poi credere a Gesù, in colui che, secondo Giovanni, sarebbe venuto dopo di lui».
5Dopo questa spiegazione, i discepoli di Efeso si fecero battezzare nel nome del Signore Gesù. 6Poi Paolo posò le mani sul loro capo, ed essi ricevettero lo Spirito Santo. Allora cominciarono a parlare in altre lingue ed a profetizzare. 7Erano circa dodici uomini in tutto. 8Poi Paolo entrò nella sinagoga, dove predicò senza paura, ogni sabato, per tre mesi. Parlava delle cose del Regno di Dio e convinceva molti di quelli che lo ascoltavano a credere in Gesù. 9Alcuni però si ostinavano a non credere, non solo, parlavano male della Via davanti alla folla. Allora Paolo non ne volle più sapere di loro. Prese con sé i credenti e cominciò a tenere ogni giorno delle riunioni di studio nella scuola di un certo Tiranno. 10Paolo continuò così per due anni, e tutti quelli che abitavano nella provincia dʼAsia, sia Greci che Giudei, ebbero occasione di ascoltare il messaggio del Signore. 11E Dio diede a Paolo il potere di fare miracoli straordinari, 12al punto che bastava mettere sopra i malati i suoi asciugamani o parte dei suoi vestiti, ed essi guarivano o erano liberati dai demòni.
13Alcuni Giudei girovaghi di città in città per cacciare i demòni, pensarono di servirsi anche essi del nome del Signore Gesù per liberare gli indemoniati. E ai demòni dicevano: «Vi scongiuro, nel nome di quel Gesù, che Paolo predica, di uscire!» 14Quelli che facevano questi esorcismi erano i sette figli di un certo Sceva, capo sacerdote giudeo. 15Ma una volta il demonio rispose loro: «Conosco Gesù e so chi è Paolo! Ma voi, chi siete?» 16E lʼindemoniato si scagliò contro due di loro e tanto li malmenò, che dovettero fuggirsene da quella casa nudi e gravemente feriti.
17Dellʼaccaduto vennero a conoscenza tutti i Giudei e i Greci che abitavano ad Efeso. Una grande paura scese sulla città, e il nome del Signore Gesù era tenuto in grande onore. 18-19Molti di quelli che erano diventati credenti venivano a confessare le cose cattive che avevano fatto. Altri che avevano praticato la magia portavano i loro libri dʼincantesimi, che poi bruciavano davanti a tutti. Si calcolò che il valore dei libri bruciati ammontasse a circa 50.000 pezzi dʼargento. 20Ciò dimostrava che il messaggio di Dio si diffondeva e si rafforzava sempre più in quella zona.
Tumulti ad Efeso
21Dopo di ciò, Paolo decise di partire per Gerusalemme, passando per le province della Macedonia e della Grecia. «Quando sarò stato a Gerusalemme», diceva, «dovrò andare anche a Roma!» 22E, dopo aver mandato in Macedonia due dei suoi aiutanti, Timòteo ed Erasto, rimase ancora per un bel poʼ di tempo nella provincia dʼAsia.
23In quel periodo, causa i cristiani, scoppiò un grande tumulto nella città di Efeso. 24Tutto cominciò con Demetrio, un orefice che fabbricava dei piccoli tempietti della dea Diana in argento: unʼattività che rendeva molto agli artigiani. 25Demetrio aveva riunito tutti gli altri orafi ed artigiani della sua stessa condizione.
«Amici», aveva detto, «voi sapete che tutto il nostro guadagno dipende da questʼattività.
26Ma voi stessi avete visto e sentito che questo Paolo ha convinto moltissima gente che gli dèi fatti a mano non sono vere divinità! Di conseguenza, ecco che le nostre vendite sono in ribasso! E questo non solo qui ad Efeso, ma quasi in tutta la provincia dʼAsia! 27A parte la questione dellʼinteresse e della perdita di guadagno, cʼè anche pericolo che il tempio della grande dea Diana non conti più niente e che Diana stessa, questa magnifica dea che tutta la provincia dʼAsia e tutto il mondo adorano, sia completamente dimenticata!»
28A queste parole, spinti dalla rabbia, tutti cominciarono a gridare: «Grande è Diana, la dea degli Efesini!»
29La folla cominciò a riunirsi, e ben presto la città fu in fermento. Tutti correvano verso lʼanfiteatro, trascinando a forza Gaio ed Aristarco, nativi della Macedonia e compagni di viaggio di Paolo, per processarli.
30Paolo voleva presentarsi al popolo, ma i discepoli non lo lasciarono andare. 31Perfino alcuni funzionari della provincia dellʼAsia, amici di Paolo, gli mandarono un messaggio per pregarlo di non mettere a repentaglio la vita, facendosi vedere nellʼanfiteatro.
32Intanto, là dentro, chi gridava una cosa, chi unʼaltra. Nellʼassemblea regnava il caos completo. I più, addirittura, non sapevano neppure perché si fossero riuniti là.
33Dalla folla, dei Giudei spingevano avanti per farlo parlare un certo Alessandro. Alessandro fece cenno con la mano per chiedere silenzio e poter parlare al popolo. 34Ma, quando si accorsero che era Giudeo, tutti, a una sola voce, si misero a gridare: «Grande è Diana, la dea degli Efesini! Grande è Diana la dea degli Efesini!» E continuarono così per quasi due ore.
35Finalmente, il segretario pubblico riuscì a calmare la folla e disse: «Efesini, tutti sanno che Efeso è il centro religioso della grande Diana, la cui immagine ci è caduta dal cielo. 36Visto che queste cose sono fuori discussione, bisogna che vi calmiate e non facciate nulla di precipitoso. 37Voi avete portato qui questi uomini, che non sono né sacrileghi, né bestemmiatori della nostra dea. 38Se Demetrio e i suoi colleghi hanno qualcosa contro di loro, ci sono i tribunali e i giudici per regolare subito la questione. Che procedano per le vie legali! 39Se invece ci sono altre cose da discutere, si potranno risolvere in unʼassemblea legalmente costituita 40Per quello che è successo oggi corriamo il rischio di, essere accusati di rivolta dal governo romano, perché non cʼè alcun motivo che giustifichi tutto questo pandemonio. E se Roma chiedesse spiegazioni, non saprei proprio che cosa rispondere!»
41Detto questo, sciolse lʼassemblea, ed ognuno se ne andò per conto proprio.
