Sheba Urges Israel Not to Follow David
1An evil man who always stirred up trouble happened to be in Gilgal. His name was Sheba, the son of Bikri. Sheba was from the tribe of Benjamin. He blew his trumpet. Then he shouted,
“We don’t have any share in David’s kingdom!
Jesse’s son is not our king!
Men of Israel, every one of you go back home!”
2So all the men of Israel deserted David. They followed Sheba, the son of Bikri. But the men of Judah stayed with their king. They remained with him from the Jordan River all the way to Jerusalem.
3David returned to his palace in Jerusalem. He had left ten concubines there to take care of the palace. He put them in a house and kept them under guard. He gave them what they needed. But he didn’t sleep with them. They were kept under guard until the day they died. They lived as if they were widows.
4The king said to Amasa, “Send for the men of Judah. Tell them to come to me within three days. And be here yourself.” 5So Amasa went to get the men of Judah. But he took longer than the time the king had set for him.
6David said to Abishai, “Sheba, the son of Bikri, will do more harm to us than Absalom ever did. Take my men and go after him. If you don’t, he’ll find cities that have high walls around them. He’ll go into one of them and escape from us.” 7So Joab’s men marched out with the Kerethites and Pelethites. They went out with all the mighty soldiers. All of them were under Abishai’s command. They marched out from Jerusalem and went after Sheba, the son of Bikri.
8They arrived at the great rock in Gibeon. Amasa went there to welcome them. Joab was wearing his military clothes. Over them at his waist he had strapped on a belt that held a dagger. As he stepped forward, he secretly took the dagger out.
9Joab said to Amasa, “How are you, my friend?” Then Joab reached out his right hand. He took hold of Amasa’s beard to kiss him. 10Amasa didn’t notice the dagger in Joab’s left hand. Joab stuck it into his stomach. His insides spilled out on the ground. Joab didn’t have to stab him again. Amasa was already dead. Then Joab and his brother Abishai went after Sheba, the son of Bikri.
11One of Joab’s men stood beside Amasa’s body. He said to the other men, “Are you pleased with Joab? Are you on David’s side? Then follow Joab!” 12Amasa’s body lay covered with his blood in the middle of the road. The man saw that all the troops stopped there. He realized that everyone was stopping to look at Amasa’s body. So he dragged it from the road into a field. Then he threw some clothes on top of it. 13After that happened, everyone continued on with Joab. They went after Sheba, the son of Bikri.
14Sheba passed through all the territory of the tribes of Israel. He arrived at the city of Abel Beth Maakah. He had gone through the entire area of the Bikrites. They had gathered together and followed him. 15Joab and all his troops came to Abel Beth Maakah. They surrounded it because Sheba was there. They built a ramp up to the city. It stood against the outer wall. They pounded the wall with huge logs to bring it down. 16While that was going on, a wise woman called out from the city. She shouted, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here. I want to speak to him.” 17So Joab went toward her. She asked, “Are you Joab?”
“I am,” he answered.
She said, “Listen to what I have to say.”
“I’m listening,” he said.
18She continued, “Long ago people used to say, ‘Get your answer at Abel.’ And that would settle the matter. 19We are the most peaceful and faithful people in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is like a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up what belongs to the Lord?”
20“I would never do anything like that!” Joab said. “I would never swallow up or destroy what belongs to the Lord! 21That isn’t what I have in mind at all. There’s a man named Sheba, the son of Bikri, in your city. He’s from the hill country of Ephraim. He’s trying to kill King David. Hand that man over to me. Then I’ll pull my men back from your city.”
The woman said to Joab, “We’ll throw his head down to you from the wall.”
22Then the woman gave her wise advice to all the people in the city. They cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bikri. They threw it down to Joab. So he blew his trumpet. Then his men pulled back from the city. Each of them returned to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.
David’s Officials
23Joab was commander over Israel’s entire army.
Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was commander over the Kerethites and Pelethites.
24Adoniram was in charge of those who were forced to work hard.
Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, kept the records.
25Sheva was the secretary.
Zadok and Abiathar were priests.
26Ira, the Jairite, was David’s priest.
La révolte de Shéba
1Il se trouvait là un vaurien nommé Shéba, fils de Bikri, de la tribu de Benjamin. Il sonna du cor et proclama : Nous n’avons rien à faire avec David, rien de commun avec le fils d’Isaï ! Rentrons chacun chez soi, hommes d’Israël !
2Et tous les hommes d’Israël du Nord se détachèrent de David pour se rallier à Shéba, fils de Bikri. Seuls les hommes de Juda restèrent attachés à leur roi et l’escortèrent depuis le Jourdain jusqu’à Jérusalem.
3Dès son arrivée au palais, David fit chercher les dix épouses de second rang qu’il avait laissées pour garder le palais et les installa dans une maison bien gardée, il leur donna tout ce qui leur était nécessaire ; mais il n’eut plus de relations avec elles. Dès lors, elles furent séquestrées jusqu’au jour de leur mort, menant la vie des veuves20.3 Pour la raison de cette décision, voir 15.16 ; 16.21-22..
Joab assassine Amasa
4Le roi ordonna à Amasa20.4 Voir 17.25 ; 19.14. David écarte Joab qui a mis Absalom à mort, contre ses ordres (18.12-15). : Mobilise d’ici trois jours les hommes de Juda, puis viens te présenter ici avec eux.
5Amasa alla mobiliser Juda, mais il tarda au-delà du délai fixé par le roi pour le rendez-vous avec lui. 6Alors David dit à Abishaï : Shéba, fils de Bikri, va maintenant nous faire plus de tort qu’Absalom. Pars donc à la tête de la garnison royale et poursuis-le ! Il ne faut pas qu’il ait le temps de trouver abri dans des villes fortifiées où il nous échapperait.
7Ainsi Abishaï partit avec la troupe commandée par Joab, ainsi qu’avec les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens20.7 Voir 8.18. et tous les soldats de métier. Ils quittèrent Jérusalem afin de poursuivre Shéba, fils de Bikri.
8Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés près de la grande pierre à Gabaon, ils virent Amasa venir au-devant d’eux. Joab portait alors sur sa tenue un ceinturon auquel était attaché, sur ses reins, le fourreau contenant son épée. Celle-ci tomba pendant que Joab s’avançait.
9Joab dit à Amasa : Vas-tu bien, mon frère ?
De la main droite, il saisit la barbe d’Amasa pour l’embrasser. 10Ce dernier ne prit pas garde à l’épée qui se trouvait dans la main gauche de Joab. Celui-ci la lui plongea dans le ventre et répandit ses intestins à terre, sans lui porter un second coup, et Amasa mourut sur-le-champ. Après cela, Joab et son frère Abishaï reprirent la poursuite de Shéba, fils de Bikri.
11Un jeune soldat de Joab s’était arrêté près du cadavre d’Amasa en répétant : Que tous ceux qui sont partisans de Joab et qui sont pour David suivent Joab !
12Or, Amasa gisait dans son sang au milieu de la route ; le soldat vit que toute la troupe s’arrêtait. Alors il ôta le corps d’Amasa du chemin en le tirant dans un champ, et le couvrit d’une couverture. 13Une fois le cadavre enlevé de la route, tous les hommes continuèrent leur chemin à la suite de Joab pour poursuivre Shéba, fils de Bikri.
La fin de Shéba
14Ils parcoururent toutes les tribus d’Israël en direction d’Abel-Beth-Maaka20.14 Une des localités les plus septentrionales d’Israël, au pied du mont Hermon, à une quarantaine de kilomètres du lac de Galilée (voir 1 R 15.20 ; 2 R 15.29 ; 2 Ch 16.4).. Tous les hommes de Bérim se rassemblèrent et marchèrent aussi à la suite de Joab 15qui, avec ses troupes, arriva à la ville d’Abel-Beth-Maaka et l’assiégea. On dressa un remblai de terre contre la ville jusqu’au niveau du rempart extérieur. Toute l’armée de Joab se mit à creuser des sapes sous la muraille pour la faire s’écrouler. 16Alors une femme avisée se mit à crier du haut du rempart de la ville : Ecoutez, écoutez ! Dites, je vous prie, à Joab : « Approche jusqu’ici, je veux te parler ! »
17Joab s’approcha d’elle et la femme lui demanda : Es-tu Joab ?
– Oui, c’est moi, répondit-il.
Elle lui dit : Ecoute les paroles de ta servante !
– J’écoute.
18Elle poursuivit : Autrefois on répétait le dicton : « Demandez conseil dans Abel ! et l’affaire sera réglée ! » 19Nous sommes parmi les gens les plus paisibles et les plus loyaux d’Israël. Et toi tu veux détruire une ville qui est une métropole en Israël ! Pourquoi ruinerais-tu une cité qui fait partie du pays de l’Eternel ?
20Joab s’écria : Sûrement pas ! Je ne veux ni détruire ni ruiner quoi que ce soit. 21Ce n’est pas de cela qu’il s’agit. Mais un homme de la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm nommé Shéba, fils de Bikri, s’est révolté contre le roi David. Livrez-le, lui seul, et je lèverai le siège de la ville.
La femme lui répondit : Eh bien, sa tête te sera lancée par-dessus la muraille.
22La femme alla trouver tous ses concitoyens et leur parla avec sagesse. Ils coupèrent la tête de Shéba et la lancèrent à Joab. Alors celui-ci fit sonner du cor et les assiégeants se retirèrent de la ville, chacun rentra chez soi. Joab retourna à Jérusalem, auprès du roi.
Les fonctionnaires de David
23Joab resta à la tête de toute l’armée d’Israël ; Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, commandait les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens. 24Adoram dirigeait les corvées ; Josaphat, fils d’Ahiloud, était archiviste ; 25Sheva était secrétaire. Tsadoq et Abiatar étaient prêtres. 26David avait aussi pour prêtre Ira de Yaïr.
