Naaman Is Healed of a Skin Disease
1Naaman was army commander of the king of Aram. He was very important to his master and was highly respected. That’s because the Lord had helped him win the battle over Aram’s enemies. He was a brave soldier. But he had a skin disease.
2Groups of soldiers from Aram had marched out. They had captured a young girl from Israel. She became a servant of Naaman’s wife. 3The young girl spoke to the woman she was serving. She said, “I wish my master would go and see the prophet who is in Samaria. He would heal my master of his skin disease.”
4Naaman went to see his own master. He told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5“I think you should go,” the king of Aram replied. “I’ll give you a letter to take to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left. He took 750 pounds of silver with him. He also took 150 pounds of gold. And he took ten sets of clothes. 6He carried the letter to the king of Israel. It said, “I’m sending my servant Naaman to you with this letter. I want you to heal him of his skin disease.”
7The king of Israel read the letter. As soon as he did, he tore his royal robes. He said, “Am I God? Can I kill people and bring them back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be healed of his skin disease? He must be trying to pick a fight with me!”
8Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes. So he sent the king a message. Elisha said, “Why have you torn your robes? Tell the man to come to me. Then he will know there is a prophet in Israel.” 9So Naaman went to see Elisha. He took his horses and chariots with him. He stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10Elisha sent a messenger out to him. The messenger said, “Go! Wash yourself in the Jordan River seven times. Then your skin will be healed. You will be pure and ‘clean’ again.”
11But Naaman went away angry. He said, “I was sure Elisha would come out to me. I thought he would stand there and pray to the Lord his God. I thought he would wave his hand over my skin. Then I would be healed. 12And what about the Abana and Pharpar rivers of Damascus? Aren’t they better than all the rivers of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in the rivers of Damascus and be made pure and ‘clean’?” So he turned and went away. He was very angry.
13Naaman’s servants went over to him. They said, “You are like a father to us. What if Elisha the prophet had told you to do some great thing? Wouldn’t you have done it? But he only said, ‘Wash yourself. Then you will be pure and “clean.” ’ You should be even more willing to do that!” 14So Naaman went down to the Jordan River. He dipped himself in it seven times. He did exactly what the man of God had told him to do. Then his skin was made pure again. It became “clean” like the skin of a young boy.
15Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. Naaman stood in front of Elisha. Naaman said, “Now I know that there is no God anywhere in the whole world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from me.”
16The prophet answered, “I serve the Lord. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that I won’t accept a gift from you.” Even though Naaman begged him to take it, Elisha wouldn’t.
17“I can see that you won’t accept a gift from me,” said Naaman. “But please let me have some soil from your land. Give me as much as a pair of mules can carry. Here’s why I want it. I won’t ever bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god again. I’ll bring them only to the Lord. I’ll worship him on his own soil. 18But there is one thing I hope the Lord will forgive me for. From time to time my master will enter the temple to bow down to his god Rimmon. When he does, he’ll lean on my arm. Then I’ll have to bow down there also. I hope the Lord will forgive me for that.”
19“Go in peace,” Elisha said.
Naaman started out on his way. 20Gehazi was the servant of Elisha, the man of God. Gehazi said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman from Aram. He should have accepted the gift Naaman brought. I’m going to run after him. I’m going to get something from him. And that’s just as sure as the Lord is alive.”
21Gehazi hurried after Naaman. Naaman saw him running toward him. So he got down from the chariot to greet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.
22“Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the group of the prophets have just come to me. They’ve come from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them 75 pounds of silver and two sets of clothes.’ ”
23“I wish you would take twice as much silver,” said Naaman. He begged Gehazi to accept it. Then Naaman tied up 150 pounds of silver in two bags. He also gave Gehazi two sets of clothes. He gave all of it to two of his own servants. They carried it ahead of Gehazi. 24Gehazi came to the hill where Elisha lived. Then the servants handed the things over to Gehazi. He put them away in Elisha’s house. He sent the men away, and they left. 25Then he went back inside the house. He stood in front of his master Elisha.
“Gehazi, where have you been?” Elisha asked.
“I didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.
26But Elisha said to him, “Didn’t my spirit go with you? I know that the man got down from his chariot to greet you. Is this the time for you to accept money or clothes? Is it the time to take olive groves, vineyards, flocks or herds? Is it the time to accept male and female slaves? 27You and your children after you will have Naaman’s skin disease forever.” Then Gehazi left Elisha. And he had Naaman’s skin disease. His skin had become as white as snow.
Vindecarea lui Naaman
1Naaman era conducătorul oștirii regelui Aramului1 Siria.. El era un om important pentru stăpânul său și totodată foarte respectat, pentru că prin el dăduse Domnul victorie lui Aram. Însă omul acesta, care ajunsese un războinic viteaz, era lepros1 Ebr.: tsara’, un verb la participiu din care derivă substantivul tsara’at (termen care, prin intermediul LXX, a ajuns să fie redat în versiunile moderne prin lepră). Majoritatea studiilor lexicale și medicale au ajuns însă la concluzia că termenul tradus în mod tradițional cu lepră se referă la o varietate de afecțiuni/infecții ale pielii, contagioase sau nu, care pot să includă Boala lui Hansen (lepra modernă, provocată de bacilul Mycobacterium leprae), dar și o serie de alte diagnostice moderne, cum ar fi: psoriazis, vitiligo, râie, dermatită seboreică, precum și alte tipuri de infecții datorate micozelor cutanate (ciupercile de piele). De asemenea, cele mai multe dintre simptomele și caracteristicile descrise în Lev. 13 nu se potrivesc maladiei lui Hansen [peste tot în capitol]..
2Arameii ieșiseră la luptă în cete și luaseră captivă o tânără din țara lui Israel. Ea era în slujba soției lui Naaman. 3Ea a zis stăpânei sale: „O, dacă stăpânul meu ar merge la profetul din Samaria, atunci el l‑ar vindeca de lepra lui.“
4Naaman s‑a dus la stăpânul său și i‑a făcut cunoscut tot ce i‑a spus tânăra care era din țara lui Israel. 5Și regele Aramului i‑a zis: „Du‑te, căci voi trimite o scrisoare regelui lui Israel!“ Naaman a plecat luând cu el zece talanți5 Un talant măsura aproximativ 30 kg; aproximativ 300 kg. de argint, șase mii de șecheli5 Sau: sicli, greutate de bază, comună la toate popoarele semite antice. Existau mai multe tipuri de șechel: regal (2 Sam. 14:26; aproximativ 13 gr), obișnuit (aproximativ 12 gr) și cel al Lăcașului (aproximativ 10 gr). Greutatea șechelului a variat în diferite vremuri și în diferite zone. Aproximativ 70 kg. de aur și zece rânduri de haine. 6El i‑a înmânat regelui lui Israel scrisoarea care spunea astfel: „Când scrisoarea aceasta îți va fi înmânată vei ști că l‑am trimis la tine pe slujitorul meu, Naaman, să‑l vindeci de lepra lui.“
7După ce a citit scrisoarea, regele lui Israel și‑a sfâșiat hainele și a zis: „Sunt eu Dumnezeu ca să omor și să înviez? De ce‑mi spune să vindec un om de lepra lui? Să știți dar și să înțelegeți că el caută motiv de ceartă cu mine.“
8Când a auzit Elisei, omul lui Dumnezeu, că regele lui Israel și‑a sfâșiat hainele, a trimis să spună regelui: „De ce ți‑ai sfâșiat hainele? Trimite‑l la mine și va ști că există un profet în Israel!“ 9Naaman a venit cu alaiul său de cai și care și s‑a oprit la poarta casei lui Elisei. 10Elisei i‑a trimis un mesager, zicând: „Du‑te și spală‑te în Iordan de șapte ori, iar carnea ți se va vindeca și vei fi curat.“
11Dar Naaman s‑a mâniat și a plecat, zicând: „Eu credeam că va ieși la mine, se va opri înaintea mea și va chema Numele Domnului, Dumnezeul lui, iar pe urmă își va îndrepta mâna spre locul rănii și mă va vindeca de lepră. 12Nu sunt oare Abana12 Sau: Amana și Parpar, râurile Damascului, mai bune decât toate apele Israelului? Nu puteam să mă spăl în ele și să fiu curat?“ Apoi s‑a întors și a plecat plin de mânie.
13Dar slujitorii lui s‑au apropiat de el și i‑au zis: „Părinte, dacă profetul ți‑ar fi spus să faci un lucru greu, nu l‑ai fi făcut? Cu atât mai mult acum, când ți‑a spus să te speli ca să fii curat!“ 14Atunci a coborât și s‑a cufundat de șapte ori în Iordan, așa cum i‑a spus omul lui Dumnezeu, iar carnea lui s‑a făcut precum carnea unui copilaș. Și astfel, el s‑a curățit. 15Apoi Naaman împreună cu toți însoțitorii lui s‑au întors la omul lui Dumnezeu.
Când a ajuns, s‑a oprit înaintea lui și i‑a zis:
– Iată, acum știu că nu este alt Dumnezeu pe tot pământul, decât în Israel. Primește, te rog, un dar din partea robului tău.
16Dar Elisei i‑a răspuns:
– Viu este Domnul, înaintea Căruia stau, că nu voi lua nimic.
Și cu toate că Naaman a insistat să ia, Elisei a refuzat.
17– Dacă nu vrei, a zis Naaman, dă voie, te rog, robului tău să încarce pământ, atât cât pot duce doi catâri, pentru că de‑acum înainte robul tău nu va mai aduce arderi‑de‑tot sau jertfe altor dumnezei, ci numai Domnului. 18Iată totuși ce‑L rog pe Domnul să‑i ierte robului tău: când stăpânul meu intră în templul lui Rimon18 Zeul furtunii și al războiului la aramei, cunoscut și ca Hadad (Baal la canaaniți și fenicieni). să se închine acolo, sprijinindu‑se de brațul meu, mă închin și eu în templul lui Rimon. Să‑l ierte deci Domnul pe robul tău când mă voi închina în templul lui Rimon.
19Elisei i‑a răspuns:
– Du‑te în pace.
După ce Naaman a plecat de la el și a străbătut o anumită distanță, 20Ghehazi, slujitorul lui Elisei, omul lui Dumnezeu, și‑a zis: „Stăpânul meu l‑a refuzat pe Naaman, arameul acesta, și n‑a luat de la el ceea ce i‑a adus. Viu este Domnul că voi alerga și voi lua ceva de la el.“ 21Astfel, Ghehazi s‑a dus după Naaman.
Când l‑a văzut Naaman alergând după el, a coborât din car ca să‑l întâmpine și i‑a zis:
– Totul este bine?
22El a răspuns:
– Totul este bine. Stăpânul meu m‑a trimis însă să‑ți spun: „Doi tineri dintre fiii profeților au venit chiar acum la mine din muntele lui Efraim. Dă‑mi, te rog, pentru ei un talant22 Aproximativ 30 kg. de argint și două rânduri de haine.“
23Naaman i‑a zis:
– Fă‑mi, te rog, pe plac și ia doi talanți23 Aproximativ 60 kg..
Naaman a insistat și i‑a pus doi talanți de argint în doi saci, împreună cu două rânduri de haine. I‑a mai dat și doi slujitori care să‑l ajute cu povara. 24Când a ajuns la deal, Ghehazi le‑a luat din mâinile lor și le‑a pus în casă. Apoi le‑a dat drumul oamenilor, iar ei au plecat. 25După aceea s‑a dus și s‑a înfățișat înaintea stăpânului său, Elisei.
Elisei l‑a întrebat:
– De unde vii, Ghehazi?
El a răspuns:
– Slujitorul tău nu s‑a dus nicăieri.
26Dar Elisei i‑a zis:
– Oare n‑a mers inima mea cu tine, când omul acela s‑a întors din carul său și te‑a întâmpinat? Este oare acum vremea de luat argint, haine, măslini, vii, turme, cirezi, robi și roabe? 27Lepra lui Naaman se va lipi de tine și de sămânța ta pentru totdeauna!
Ghehazi a ieșit dinaintea lui Elisei lepros, alb ca zăpada.
