Asa Makes Judah a Better Nation
1The Spirit of God came on Azariah. He was the son of Oded. 2Azariah went out to meet Asa. He said to him, “Asa and all you people of Judah and Benjamin, listen to me. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you really look for him, you will find him. But if you desert him, he will desert you. 3For a long time Israel didn’t worship the true God. They didn’t have a priest who taught them. So they didn’t know God’s law. 4But when they were in trouble, they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel. When they did, they found him. 5In those days it wasn’t safe to travel around. The people who lived in all the areas of the land were having a lot of trouble. 6One nation was crushing another. One city was crushing another. That’s because God was causing them to suffer terribly. 7But be strong. Don’t give up. God will reward you for your work.”
8Asa heard that prophecy. He paid attention to the words of Azariah the prophet, the son of Oded. So Asa became bolder than ever. He removed the statues of gods from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin. He also removed them from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He did it because the Lord hated those gods. Asa repaired the altar of the Lord. It was in front of the porch of the Lord’s temple.
9Then Asa gathered together all the people of Judah and Benjamin. He also gathered together the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who were living among them. Large numbers of people had come over to him from Israel. They came because they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10They gathered in Jerusalem. It was the third month of the 15th year of Asa’s rule. 11At that time they sacrificed to the Lord 700 oxen and 7,000 sheep and goats. The animals were among the things they had taken after the battle. 12They made a covenant to obey the Lord, the God of their people. They would obey him with all their heart and soul. 13All those who wouldn’t obey the Lord, the God of Israel, would be killed. It wouldn’t matter how important they were. It wouldn’t matter whether they were men or women. 14They made a promise to the Lord. They praised him out loud. They shouted. They blew trumpets and horns. 15All the people of Judah were happy about the promise they had made. They turned to God with all their heart. When they did, they found him. So the Lord gave them peace and rest on every side.
16King Asa also removed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother. That’s because she had made a pole used to worship the female god named Asherah. The Lord hated it. So Asa cut it down. He broke it up. He burned it in the Kidron Valley. 17Asa didn’t remove the high places from Israel. But he committed his whole life completely to the Lord. 18He and his father had set apart silver, gold and other things to the Lord. Asa brought them into God’s temple.
19There weren’t any more wars until the 35th year of Asa’s rule.

15:16-19 – 1R 15:13-16
1El Espíritu de Dios vino sobre Azarías hijo de Oded, 2y este salió al encuentro de Asá y le dijo: «Asá, y gente de Judá y de Benjamín, ¡escuchadme! El Señor estará con vosotros, siempre y cuando vosotros estéis con él. Si lo buscáis, él dejará que lo halléis; pero, si lo abandonáis, él os abandonará. 3Por mucho tiempo Israel estuvo sin el Dios verdadero y sin instrucción,15:3 instrucción. Alt. ley. pues no había sacerdote que le enseñara. 4Pero, cuando en su tribulación se volvieron al Señor, Dios de Israel, y lo buscaron, él les permitió que lo hallaran. 5En aquellos tiempos no había seguridad para ningún viajero, sino que los habitantes de todos los países sufrían grandes calamidades. 6Las naciones y las ciudades se destrozaban unas a otras, porque Dios las castigaba con toda clase de calamidades. 7Pero, vosotros, ¡manteneos firmes y no bajéis la guardia, porque vuestras obras serán recompensadas!»
8Cuando Asá oyó este mensaje del profeta Azarías hijo de Oded,15:8 Azarías hijo de Oded (ms. de LXX y Vulgata); Oded (TM). se animó a eliminar los detestables ídolos que había en todo el territorio de Judá y Benjamín, y en las ciudades que había conquistado en los montes de Efraín. Además, restauró el altar del Señor que estaba frente al atrio del templo del Señor. 9Después convocó a los habitantes de Judá y de Benjamín, como también a los de Efraín, Manasés y Simeón que vivían entre ellos, pues muchos israelitas se habían unido a Asá, al ver que el Señor su Dios estaba con él. 10Se reunieron en Jerusalén en el mes tercero del año quince del reinado de Asá. 11Ese día ofrecieron al Señor setecientos bueyes y siete mil ovejas del botín que habían tomado. 12Luego hicieron un pacto, mediante el cual se comprometieron a buscar de todo corazón y con toda el alma al Señor, Dios de sus antepasados. 13Al que no buscara al Señor, Dios de Israel, se le castigaría con la muerte, fuera grande o pequeño, hombre o mujer. 14Así lo juraron ante el Señor, en voz alta y en medio de gritos y toques de trompetas y de cuernos. 15Todos los de Judá se alegraron de haber hecho este juramento, porque lo habían hecho de todo corazón y habían buscado al Señor con voluntad sincera, y él se había dejado hallar de ellos y les había concedido vivir en paz con las naciones vecinas.
16Además, el rey Asá destituyó a su abuela Macá de su puesto como reina madre, porque ella había hecho una escandalosa imagen de la diosa Aserá. Asá derribó la imagen, la redujo a polvo y la quemó en el arroyo de Cedrón. 17Aunque no quitó de Israel los santuarios paganos, Asá se mantuvo siempre fiel al Señor,15:17 Asá se mantuvo siempre fiel al Señor. Lit. el corazón de Asá fue perfecto con el Señor todos sus días. 18y llevó al templo de Dios el oro, la plata y los utensilios que él y su padre habían consagrado.
19Durante los primeros treinta y cinco años del reinado de Asá no hubo guerra.
