Israel Refuses to Follow Rehoboam
1Rehoboam went to the city of Shechem. All the Israelites had gone there to make him king. 2Jeroboam heard about it. He was the son of Nebat. Jeroboam was in Egypt at that time. He had gone there for safety. He wanted to get away from King Solomon. But now he returned from Egypt. 3So the people sent for Jeroboam. He and all the people went to Rehoboam. They said to him, 4“Your father put a heavy load on our shoulders. But now make our hard work easier. Make the heavy load on us lighter. Then we’ll serve you.”
5Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6Then King Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They had served his father Solomon while he was still living. Rehoboam asked them, “What advice can you give me? How should I answer these people?”
7They replied, “Be kind to them. Please them. Give them what they are asking for. Then they’ll always serve you.”
8But Rehoboam didn’t accept the advice the elders gave him. He asked for advice from the young men who had grown up with him and were now serving him. 9He asked them, “What’s your advice? How should I answer these people? They said to me, ‘Make the load your father put on our shoulders lighter.’ ”
10The young men who had grown up with him gave their answer. They replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy load on our shoulders. Make it lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is stronger than my father’s legs. 11My father put a heavy load on your shoulders. But I’ll make it even heavier. My father beat you with whips. But I’ll beat you with bigger whips.’ ”
12Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam. That’s because the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13The king answered them in a mean way. He didn’t accept the advice of the elders. 14Instead, he followed the advice of the young men. He said, “My father put a heavy load on your shoulders. But I’ll make it even heavier. My father beat you with whips. But I’ll beat you with bigger whips.” 15So the king didn’t listen to the people. That’s because God had planned it that way. What the Lord had said through Ahijah came true. Ahijah had spoken the Lord’s message to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Ahijah was from Shiloh.
16All the Israelites saw that the king refused to listen to them. So they answered the king. They said,
“We don’t have any share in David’s royal family.
We don’t have any share in Jesse’s son.
People of Israel, let’s go back to our homes.
David’s royal family, take care of your own kingdom!”
So all the Israelites went home. 17But Rehoboam still ruled over the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah.
18Adoniram was in charge of those who were forced to work hard for King Rehoboam. The king sent him out among the Israelites. But they killed Adoniram by throwing stones at him. Rehoboam was able to get away in his chariot. He escaped to Jerusalem. 19Israel has refused to follow the royal family of David to this day.
Nagrebelde ang Israel kay Rehoboam
(1 Hari 12:1-20)
1Pumunta si Rehoboam sa Shekem, kung saan nagtipon ang lahat ng mga Israelita para hirangin siya na hari. 2Nang mabalitaan ito ni Jeroboam na anak ni Nebat, bumalik siya sa Israel. (Sapagkat sa panahong ito, doon siya nakatira sa Egipto, kung saan tumakas siya kay Haring Solomon.) 3Ipinatawag ng mga Israelita si Jeroboam, at pumunta sila kay Rehoboam at sinabi, 4“Mabigat ang mga ipinapatupad ng inyong ama sa amin. Pero kung pagagaanin nʼyo ito, paglilingkuran namin kayo.”
5Sumagot si Rehoboam, “Bigyan nʼyo muna ako ng tatlong araw para pag-isipan ito, pagkatapos, bumalik kayo sa akin.” Kaya umuwi ang mga tao. 6Nakipagkita agad si Haring Rehoboam sa mga tagapamahala na naglilingkod sa ama niyang si Solomon nang nabubuhay pa ito. Nagtanong si Rehoboam sa kanila, “Ano ba ang maipapayo ninyo na isasagot ko sa hinihiling ng mga taong iyon?” 7Sumagot sila, “Kung ipapakita nʼyo ang inyong kabutihan sa kanila, at ibibigay sa kanila ang kanilang kahilingan, maglilingkod sila sa inyo magpakailanman.”
8Pero hindi sinunod ni Rehoboam ang kanilang payo. Sa halip, nakipagkita siya sa mga kababata niya na naglilingkod sa kanya. 9Nagtanong siya sa kanila, “Ano ba ang maipapayo nʼyo na isasagot ko sa kahilingan ng mga taong iyon? Humihiling sila sa akin na pagaanin ko ang mabigat na mga ipinapatupad ng aking ama sa kanila.” 10Sumagot ang mga binata, “Ito ang isagot mo sa mga taong iyon na humihiling sa iyo: ‘Ang aking kalingkingan ay mas malaki pa sa baywang ng aking ama. 11Ang ibig kong sabihin mas mabigat pa ang ipapatupad ko sa inyo kaysa sa ipinapatupad ng aking ama. Kung pinalo kayo ng aking ama ng latigo, papaluin ko kayo ng latigong may matalim na mga bakal.’ ”10:11 latigong … bakal: sa literal, alakdan. Ganito rin sa talatang 14.
12Pagkalipas ng tatlong araw, bumalik si Jeroboam at ang mga tao kay Haring Rehoboam, ayon sa sinabi ng hari sa kanila. 13Pero hindi tinupad ni Rehoboam ang ipinayo ng mga tagapamahala. Sa halip, pinagsalitaan niya nang masasakit ang mga tao 14ayon sa ipinayo ng mga binata. Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Mabigat ang ipinapatupad ng aking ama sa inyo, pero mas mabigat pa ang ipapatupad ko sa inyo. Kung pinalo kayo ng aking ama ng latigo, papaluin ko kayo ng latigong may matalim na mga bakal.”
15Kaya hindi nakinig ang hari sa mga tao, itoʼy niloob ng Dios para matupad ang kanyang sinabi kay Jeroboam na anak ni Nebat sa pamamagitan ni Ahia na taga-Shilo. 16Nang malaman ng mga Israelita na hindi sila pinakinggan ng hari, sinabi nila sa hari, “Hindi kami bahagi ng lahi ni David! Bahala ka na sa iyong kaharian! Halikayo mga Israelita, umuwi na tayo!” Kaya umuwi ang lahat ng mga Israelita. 17Ang mga Israelita lang na nakatira sa mga bayan ng Juda ang pinamahalaan ni Rehoboam.
18Ngayon, pinapunta ni Haring Rehoboam sa mga Israelita si Adoram, ang tagapamahala ng mga tao na pinagtatrabaho ng sapilitan, para makipag-ayos sa kanila. Pero binato siya ng mga Israelita hanggang sa mamatay. Nagmamadaling sumakay si Rehoboam sa kanyang karwahe at tumakas papunta sa Jerusalem. 19Hanggang ngayon, nagrerebelde ang mga Israelita sa mga angkan ni David.
