Faith in God’s Son Who Became a Human Being
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children as well. 2Here is how we know that we love God’s children. We know it when we love God and obey his commands. 3In fact, here is what it means to love God. We love him by obeying his commands. And his commands are not hard to obey. 4That’s because everyone who is a child of God has won the battle over the world. Our faith has won the battle for us. 5Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6Jesus Christ was born as we are, and he died on the cross. He wasn’t just born as we are. He also died on the cross. The Holy Spirit is a truthful witness about him. That’s because the Spirit is the truth. 7There are three that are witnesses about Jesus. 8They are the Holy Spirit, the birth of Jesus, and the death of Jesus. And the three of them agree. 9We accept what people say when they are witnesses. But it’s more important when God is a witness. That’s because it is what God says about his Son. 10Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts what God says about him. Whoever does not believe God is calling him a liar. That’s because they have not believed what God said about his Son. 11Here is what God says about the Son. God has given us eternal life. And this life is found in his Son. 12Whoever belongs to the Son has life. Whoever doesn’t belong to the Son of God doesn’t have life.
Final Words
13I’m writing these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God. I’m writing so you will know that you have eternal life. 14Here is what we can be sure of when we come to God in prayer. If we ask anything in keeping with what he wants, he hears us. 15If we know that God hears what we ask for, we know that we have it.
16Suppose you see any brother or sister commit a sin. But this sin is not the kind that leads to death. Then you should pray, and God will give them life. I’m talking about someone whose sin does not lead to death. But there is a sin that does lead to death. I’m not saying you should pray about that sin. 17Every wrong thing we do is sin. But there are sins that do not lead to death.
18We know that those who are children of God do not keep on sinning. The Son of God keeps them safe. The evil one can’t harm them. 19We know that we are children of God. We know that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20We also know that the Son of God has come. He has given us understanding. So we can know the God who is true. And we belong to the true God by belonging to his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Vivamos en la fe
1Todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo, ha nacido de Dios. Todo el que ama al padre ama también a sus hijos. 2Así, cuando amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos, sabemos que amamos a los hijos de Dios. 3En esto consiste el amor a Dios: en que obedezcamos sus mandamientos. Y estos no son difíciles de cumplir, 4porque todo el que ha nacido de Dios vence al mundo. Esta es la victoria que vence al mundo: nuestra fe. 5¿Quién es el que vence al mundo sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios?
6Este es el que vino mediante agua y sangre: Jesucristo. Y no solo vino mediante agua, sino mediante agua y sangre. El Espíritu es quien da testimonio de esto, porque el Espíritu es la verdad. 7Tres son los que dan testimonio 8y los tres están de acuerdo: el Espíritu,5:7-8 testimonio … Espíritu. Var. testimonio en el cielo: el Padre, el Verbo y el Espíritu Santo, y estos tres son uno. 8 Y hay tres que dan testimonio en la tierra: el Espíritu (este pasaje se encuentra en mss. posteriores de la Vulgata, pero no está en ningún ms. griego anterior al siglo XIV). el agua y la sangre. 9Aceptamos el testimonio humano, pero el testimonio de Dios vale mucho más, porque es el testimonio que él mismo ha dado acerca de su Hijo. 10El que cree en el Hijo de Dios acepta este testimonio. El que no cree a Dios lo hace pasar por mentiroso, por no haber creído el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. 11Y el testimonio es este: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna y esa vida está en su Hijo. 12El que tiene al Hijo, tiene la vida; el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no tiene la vida.
Observaciones finales
13Escribo estas cosas a ustedes que creen en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen vida eterna. 14Esta es la confianza que tenemos al acercarnos a Dios: que, si pedimos cualquier cosa conforme a su voluntad, él nos oye. 15Y si sabemos que Dios oye todas nuestras oraciones, podemos estar seguros de que ya tenemos lo que le hemos pedido.
16Si alguno ve a su hermano cometer un pecado que no lleva a la muerte, ore por él y Dios le dará vida. Me refiero a quien comete un pecado que no lleva a la muerte. Hay pecado que sí lleva a la muerte y en ese caso no digo que se ore por él. 17Toda maldad es pecado, pero hay pecado que no lleva a la muerte.
18Sabemos que el que ha nacido de Dios no practica el pecado: Jesucristo, que nació de Dios, lo protege y el maligno no llega a tocarlo. 19Sabemos que somos hijos de Dios y que el mundo entero está bajo el control del maligno. 20También sabemos que el Hijo de Dios ha venido y nos ha dado entendimiento para que conozcamos al Verdadero. Y estamos con el Verdadero, con5:20 con. Alt. por medio de. su Hijo Jesucristo, que es Dios Verdadero y vida eterna.
21Queridos hijos, apártense de los ídolos.
