Jesus Came as a Human Being
1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit. Test the spirits to see if they belong to God. Many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2Here is how you can recognize the Spirit of God. Every spirit agreeing that Jesus Christ came in a human body belongs to God. 3But every spirit that doesn’t agree with this does not belong to God. You have heard that the spirit of the great enemy of Christ is coming. Even now it is already in the world.
4Dear children, you belong to God. You have not accepted the teachings of the false prophets. That’s because the one who is in you is powerful. He is more powerful than the one who is in the world. 5False prophets belong to the world. So they speak from the world’s point of view. And the world listens to them. 6We belong to God. And those who know God listen to us. But those who don’t belong to God don’t listen to us. That’s how we can tell the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of lies.
We Love Because God Loved Us
7Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has become a child of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9Here is how God showed his love among us. He sent his one and only Son into the world. He sent him so we could receive life through him. 10Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins. 11Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we should also love one another. 12No one has ever seen God. But if we love one another, God lives in us. His love is made complete in us.
13Here’s how we know that we are joined to him and he to us. He has given us his Holy Spirit. 14The Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. We have seen it and are witnesses to it. 15God lives in anyone who agrees that Jesus is the Son of God. This kind of person remains joined to God. 16So we know that God loves us. We depend on it.
God is love. Anyone who leads a life of love is joined to God. And God is joined to them. 17Suppose love is fulfilled among us. Then we can be without fear on the day God judges the world. Love is fulfilled among us when in this world we are like Jesus. 18There is no fear in love. Instead, perfect love drives away fear. That’s because fear has to do with being punished. The one who fears does not have perfect love.
19We love because he loved us first. 20Suppose someone claims to love God but hates a brother or sister. Then they are a liar. They don’t love their brother or sister, whom they have seen. So they can’t love God, whom they haven’t seen. 21Here is the command God has given us. Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
Un invito allʼamore reciproco
1Carissimi, non credete ad ogni cosa, solo perché qualcuno vi dice che viene da Dio, ma accertatevi prima che sia davvero così, perché si sono fatti avanti molti falsi maestri che predicano nel mondo. 2Questa è la prova per riconoscere se il loro messaggio proviene dallo Spirito Santo: se qualcuno dice che Gesù è il Cristo fatto uomo, il messaggio viene da Dio. 3Se invece lo nega, il messaggio non viene da Dio, ma da chi è contro Cristo: dallo spirito dellʼanticristo. Come vi è già stato annunciato, lʼanticristo deve venire, anzi è già nel mondo.
4Ma voi, figli miei, appartenete a Dio e avete già vinto la vostra battaglia contro questi falsi maestri, perché cʼè qualcuno nel vostro cuore che è più forte del diavolo, che guida tutti i falsi maestri di questo mondo. 5Costoro appartengono al mondo, perciò parlano un linguaggio che il mondo capisce; ecco perché il mondo li ascolta! 6Noi, invece, siamo figli di Dio, per questo soltanto chi conosce Dio ci ascolta. Non gli altri. Ecco unʼaltra riprova per scoprire se un messaggio viene da Dio: se viene da Dio il mondo non vorrà ascoltarlo.
7Cari fratelli, amiamoci a vicenda, perché lʼamore viene da Dio; e chi ama gli altri dimostra di essere nato da Dio e di conoscerlo. 8Chi invece non ama gli altri, non conosce Dio, perché Dio è amore.
9Dio ci ha dimostrato il suo amore, mandando in questo mondo malvagio il suo unico Figlio, perché avessimo la vita eterna tramite la sua morte. 10E questo è il vero amore: non siamo stati noi che abbiamo amato Dio, ma è stato Dio che ha amato noi, ed ha mandato suo Figlio per farci avere il perdono dei nostri peccati.
11Miei cari, se Dio ci ha amato tanto, anche noi dobbiamo amarci a vicenda! 12Perché, anche se nessuno ha mai visto Dio, quando ci amiamo a vicenda, egli vive in noi e il suo amore perfetto è dentro di noi. 13E perché sappiamo che noi viviamo in lui ed egli vive in noi, il Signore ci ha messo nel cuore il suo Spirito Santo. 14Ma non è tutto; lʼabbiamo visto coi nostri occhi ed ora lo testimoniamo: Dio ha mandato suo Figlio per salvare il mondo. 15Chiunque crede e dice che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio, Dio vive in lui ed egli vive in Dio.
16Per quanto ci riguarda, noi abbiamo imparato a conoscere lʼamore di Dio; ed è in questo amore che abbiamo riposto la nostra fiducia. Dio è amore, e chi vive nellʼamore vive con Dio, e Dio vive in lui. 17Ed è vivendo con Cristo che il nostro amore raggiunge la perfezione, allora ci sentiamo perfettamente sicuri per ciò che riguarda il giorno del giudizio, perché come è Cristo, così siamo anche noi in questo mondo.
18Nellʼamore non cʼè paura, anzi, lʼamore perfetto di Dio caccia via la paura. Infatti, chi ha paura dimostra di non essere pienamente convinto dellʼamore perfetto di Dio. 19Noi amiamo Dio, perché egli ci ha dimostrato il suo amore per primo.
20Chi dice: «Io amo Dio», e poi odia il proprio fratello, è un bugiardo. Infatti chi non ama suo fratello, che è lì e si vede, come può amare Dio, che non ha mai visto? 21Il Signore stesso ci ha dato questo comandamento: chi ama Dio deve amare anche i fratelli.
