1Suppose I speak in the languages of human beings or of angels. If I don’t have love, I am only a loud gong or a noisy cymbal. 2Suppose I have the gift of prophecy. Suppose I can understand all the secret things of God and know everything about him. And suppose I have enough faith to move mountains. If I don’t have love, I am nothing at all. 3Suppose I give everything I have to poor people. And suppose I give myself over to a difficult life so I can brag. If I don’t have love, I get nothing at all.
4Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others. It does not brag. It is not proud. 5It does not dishonor other people. It does not look out for its own interests. It does not easily become angry. It does not keep track of other people’s wrongs. 6Love is not happy with evil. But it is full of joy when the truth is spoken. 7It always protects. It always trusts. It always hopes. It never gives up.
8Love never fails. But prophecy will pass away. Speaking in languages that had not been known before will end. And knowledge will pass away. 9What we know now is not complete. What we prophesy now is not perfect. 10But when what is complete comes, the things that are not complete will pass away. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child. I thought like a child. I had the understanding of a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12Now we see only a dim likeness of things. It is as if we were seeing them in a foggy mirror. But someday we will see clearly. We will see face to face. What I know now is not complete. But someday I will know completely, just as God knows me completely.
13The three most important things to have are faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love.
Despre dragoste
1Chiar dacă aș vorbi în limbile oamenilor și ale îngerilor, dar n‑am dragoste, am devenit o goarnă de aramă răsunătoare sau un țambal zdrăngănitor. 2Și chiar dacă aș avea darul profeției și aș înțelege toate tainele și toată cunoștința, chiar dacă aș avea toată credința, așa încât să mut munții, dar n‑am dragoste, sunt nimic. 3Chiar dacă mi‑aș împărți toate bunurile și chiar dacă mi‑aș da trupul să fiu ars3 Unele mss conțin: trupul, să fie ars. Sau: trupul să mă laud., dar n‑am dragoste, nu‑mi folosește la nimic.
4Dragostea este răbdătoare, dragostea este plină de bunătate, nu este invidioasă, dragostea nu se laudă, nu se îngâmfă, 5nu se comportă necuviincios, nu caută foloasele sale, nu se supără, nu se gândește la rău, 6nu se bucură de nedreptate, ci își găsește bucuria în adevăr, 7acoperă totul7 Lit.: toate [peste tot în verset]., crede totul, speră totul, suportă totul.
8Dragostea nu piere niciodată. Cât despre profeții însă, ele se vor sfârși; cât despre limbi, ele vor înceta; cât despre cunoștință, ea se va sfârși. 9Căci cunoaștem în parte și profețim în parte, 10însă, când va veni ce este desăvârșit, ceea ce există doar în parte se va sfârși. 11Când eram copil, vorbeam ca un copil, judecam ca un copil, gândeam ca un copil; când am devenit bărbat, am sfârșit‑o cu lucrurile copilărești. 12Acum vedem printr‑o oglindă12 Analogia făcută de Pavel se potrivea foarte bine corintenilor, știut fiind faptul că în Corint se făceau unele dintre cele mai bune oglinzi din bronz lustruit., în mod neclar12 Gr.: ainigma, de unde provine cuvântul enigmă. Pavel se referă la faptul că în oglinzile din antichitate, care erau confecționate din metal șlefuit, chipul sau trăsăturile unei persoane se puteau distinge cu greu., însă atunci vom vedea față în față. Acum cunosc în parte, însă atunci voi cunoaște pe deplin, așa cum am fost și eu cunoscut pe deplin.
13Acum deci rămân acestea trei: credința, speranța și dragostea; dar cea mai mare dintre ele este dragostea.
