David Becomes King Over Israel
1The whole community of Israel came together to see David at Hebron. They said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2In the past, Saul was our king. But you led the men of Israel in battle. The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will be the shepherd over my people Israel. You will become their ruler.’ ”
3All the elders of Israel came to see King David at Hebron. There he made a covenant with them in front of the Lord. They anointed David as king over Israel. It happened just as the Lord had promised through Samuel.
David Captures Jerusalem
4David and all the men of Israel marched to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was also called Jebus. The Jebusites who lived there 5said to David, “You won’t get in here.” But David captured the fort of Zion. It became known as the City of David.
6David had said, “Anyone who leads the attack against the Jebusites will become the commander of Israel’s army.” Joab went up first. So he became the commander of the army. He was the son of Zeruiah.
7David moved into the fort. So it was called the City of David. 8He built up the city around the fort. He filled in the low places. He built a wall around it. During that time, Joab built up the rest of the city. 9David became more and more powerful. That’s because the Lord who rules over all was with him.
David’s Mighty Warriors
10The chiefs of David’s mighty warriors and the whole community of Israel helped David greatly. They helped him become king over the entire land. That’s exactly what the Lord had promised him. 11Here is a list of David’s mighty warriors.
Jashobeam was chief of the officers. He was a Hakmonite. He used his spear against 300 men. He killed all of them at one time.
12Next to him was Eleazar. He was one of the three mighty warriors. He was the son of Dodai, the Ahohite. 13Jashobeam was with David at Pas Dammim. The Philistines had gathered there for battle. Israel’s troops ran away from the Philistines. At the place where that happened, there was a field full of barley. 14The three mighty warriors took their stand in the middle of the field. They didn’t let the Philistines capture it. They struck them down. The Lord helped them win a great battle.
15David was near the rock at the cave of Adullam. Three of the 30 chiefs came down to him there. A group of Philistines was camped in the Valley of Rephaim. 16At that time David was in his usual place of safety. Some Philistine troops were stationed at Bethlehem. 17David really wanted some water. He said, “I wish someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18So the three mighty warriors fought their way past the Philistine guards. They got some water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem. They took the water back to David. But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as a drink offering to the Lord. 19“I would never drink that water!” David said. “It would be like drinking the blood of these men. They put their lives in danger by going to Bethlehem.” The men had put their lives in danger by bringing the water back. So David wouldn’t drink it.
Those were some of the brave things the three mighty warriors did.
20Abishai was chief over the three mighty warriors. He was the brother of Joab. Abishai used his spear against 300 men. He killed all of them. So he became as famous as the three mighty warriors. 21He was honored twice as much as the three mighty warriors. He became their commander. But he wasn’t included among them.
22Benaiah was a great hero from Kabzeel. He was the son of Jehoiada. Benaiah did many brave things. He struck down two of Moab’s best fighting men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day. He killed a lion there. 23And Benaiah struck down an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian was holding a spear as big as a weaver’s rod. Benaiah went out to fight against him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand. Then he killed him with it. 24Those were some of the brave things Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did. He too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 25He was honored more than any of the 30 chiefs. But he wasn’t included among the three mighty warriors. And David put him in charge of his own personal guards.

David devient roi de tout Israël
(2 S 5.1-3)
1Tout Israël se rassembla auprès de David à Hébron11.1 Ville située à 35 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Jérusalem (voir Gn 13.18). pour lui dire : Voici, nous sommes de ta race et de ton sang. 2Autrefois déjà, même du temps où Saül était roi, c’est toi qui dirigeais les expéditions militaires d’Israël. Or, l’Eternel, ton Dieu, t’a promis que tu serais le berger d’Israël, son peuple, et que tu en deviendrais le chef.
3Ainsi tous les responsables d’Israël vinrent trouver le roi à Hébron. Là, David conclut une alliance avec eux devant l’Eternel, et ils lui conférèrent l’onction pour le faire roi d’Israël, conformément à ce qu’avait déclaré l’Eternel par l’intermédiaire de Samuel.
La conquête de Jérusalem
(2 S 5.6-10)
4David marcha avec tout Israël sur Jérusalem, qui s’appelait alors Yebous. La ville était occupée par les Yebousiens, habitants du pays. 5Ces gens déclarèrent à David : Tu n’entreras pas ici !
Mais David s’empara de la forteresse de Sion11.5 A l’origine, cette expression désignait la colline orientale de Jérusalem où sera construit le Temple (voir Es 2.3 ; Mi 4.2, 8 ; Jr 31.12). Plus tard, le nom de Sion s’étendra à toute la ville., qu’on appelle la Cité de David. 6David avait déclaré à ses hommes : Le premier qui battra les Yebousiens, je le nommerai commandant en chef de l’armée.
Ce fut Joab, fils de Tserouya11.6 Sœur de David. Joab était donc le neveu de David (1 S 26.6 ; 1 Ch 2.16)., qui monta le premier à l’assaut et il devint chef de l’armée. 7David s’installa dans la forteresse, c’est pourquoi on l’a appelée la Cité de David. 8Il agrandit la ville par des constructions tout autour, depuis les terrasses aménagées pour les cultures, jusqu’au mur d’enceinte, tandis que Joab restaurait le reste de la ville. 9David devint de plus en plus puissant, et l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes, était avec lui.
Les chefs guerriers de David
(2 S 23.8-39)
10Voici les noms des chefs des guerriers de David qui, avec tout Israël, lui apportèrent un puissant soutien pendant son règne selon la parole de l’Eternel au sujet d’Israël. 11Voici donc la liste des guerriers de David : Yashobeam, descendant de Hakmoni, était le chef du groupe des trois11.11 D’après certains manuscrits de l’ancienne version grecque, la version syriaque, la Vulgate et 1 S 23.8. Le texte hébreu traditionnel a : du groupe des trente.. C’est lui qui brandit son javelot contre trois cents hommes et les tua tous au cours d’un seul combat.
12Le second était Eléazar, fils de Dodo l’Ahohite. Il était l’un des trois guerriers. 13Il accompagna David à Pas-Dammin, où les Philistins s’étaient rassemblés pour la bataille. Il y avait là un champ couvert d’orge. Les Israélites avaient pris la fuite devant les Philistins. 14Ils prirent position au milieu du champ, le libérèrent et frappèrent les Philistins. Ainsi l’Eternel accorda une victoire éclatante à Israël.
15Un jour, trois des trente chefs vinrent sur le rocher, auprès de David, dans la caverne d’Adoullam, tandis qu’une troupe de Philistins campait dans la vallée des Rephaïm11.15 Au sud-ouest de Jérusalem (2 S 23.13).. 16David se trouvait alors dans son refuge fortifié, et des Philistins avaient pris position à Bethléhem. 17David fut soudain pris d’un brûlant désir et s’écria : Qui me fera boire de l’eau du puits qui se trouve à la porte de Bethléhem ?
18Alors les trois pénétrèrent dans le camp des Philistins et puisèrent de l’eau au puits qui est à la porte de Bethléhem. Ils l’apportèrent et la présentèrent à David ; mais celui-ci ne voulut pas en boire et la répandit en libation pour l’Eternel. 19Il s’exclama : Que mon Dieu me garde de faire pareille chose ! Ce serait comme si je buvais le sang de ces hommes qui sont allés chercher cette eau au péril de leur vie. Car c’est bien au péril de leur vie qu’ils ont apporté cette eau.
Il refusa donc de la boire. Tel fut l’exploit de ces trois guerriers.
20Abishaï, frère de Joab, était le chef de ce groupe de trois. Un jour, il brandit son javelot contre trois cents hommes et les tua. Ainsi il devint célèbre parmi le second groupe des trois. 21Il était le plus considéré dans le second groupe des trois et devint leur chef ; mais il n’égala pas les trois du premier groupe.
22Benaya, de Qabtséel, fils de Yehoyada et petit-fils d’un homme valeureux qui avait accompli de nombreux exploits, tua11.22 L’ancienne version grecque a : Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, était un homme valeureux de Qabtseel, qui avait accompli de nombreux exploits. Il tua… deux puissants héros moabites. C’est lui aussi qui, un jour de neige, descendit au fond d’une citerne pour y tuer un lion. 23C’est encore lui qui tua cet Egyptien mesurant près de deux mètres cinquante et qui maniait un javelot aussi gros qu’un cylindre de métier à tisser. Il bondit sur lui, armé d’un simple bâton, et lui arracha son javelot dont il se servit pour le tuer.
24Tels furent les exploits de Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, qui se fit une renommée parmi le second groupe des trois. 25Il fut le plus estimé parmi les trente, mais sans égaler ceux du premier groupe des trois. David lui confia le commandement de sa garde personnelle.
