El cedro del Líbano
1El día primero del mes tercero del año undécimo, el Señor me dirigió la palabra: 2«Hijo de hombre, dile al faraón, rey de Egipto, y a toda su gente:
»“¿Quién se puede comparar con tu grandeza?
3Fíjate en Asiria,
que alguna vez fue cedro del Líbano,
con bello y frondoso ramaje;
su copa sobresalía del espeso follaje.
4Las aguas lo hicieron crecer;
las corrientes profundas lo nutrieron.
Sus ríos corrían
en torno a sus raíces;
sus acequias regaban
todos los árboles del campo.
5Así el cedro creció
más alto que todos los árboles del campo.
Gracias a las abundantes aguas,
se extendió su frondoso ramaje.
6Todas las aves del cielo
anidaban en sus ramas.
Todas las bestias del campo
tenían sus crías bajo su follaje.
Todas las naciones
vivían bajo su sombra.
7Era un árbol imponente y majestuoso,
de ramas extendidas;
sus raíces se hundían
hasta las aguas caudalosas.
8Ningún cedro en el jardín de Dios
se le podía comparar;
ningún ciprés ostentaba un follaje parecido
ni tenían su ramaje los castaños.
Ningún árbol del jardín de Dios
se le comparaba en hermosura.
9Yo lo hice bello
y con un ramaje majestuoso.
En el Edén, jardín de Dios,
era la envidia de todos los árboles.
10»”Por eso, así dice el Señor y Dios: Por cuanto el árbol creció tan alto y ufano de su altura, y se elevaba sobre el espeso follaje, 11yo lo he desechado; lo entregué en manos de un líder de naciones, para que lo trate según su maldad. 12Los extranjeros más crueles lo han talado y abandonado. Sus ramas han caído en los montes y en los valles; yacen rotas por todos los canales de los ríos del país. Huyeron y lo abandonaron todas las naciones que buscaban protección bajo su sombra. 13Ahora las aves del cielo se posan sobre su tronco caído y las bestias del campo se meten entre sus ramas. 14Y esto es para que ningún árbol que esté junto a las aguas vuelva a crecer tanto; para que ningún árbol, por bien regado que esté, vuelva a elevar su copa hasta las nubes. Todos están destinados a la muerte, a bajar a las regiones profundas de la tierra y quedarse entre los mortales que descienden a la fosa.
15»”Así dice el Señor y Dios: El día en que el cedro bajó a los dominios de la muerte,31:15 a los dominios de la muerte. Lit. al Seol. cubrí de luto las profundidades de las aguas. Detuve sus corrientes y contuve sus ríos; por él vestí de luto al Líbano y todos los árboles del campo se marchitaron. 16Cuando lo hice descender a los dominios de la muerte, junto con los que bajan a la fosa, con el estruendo de su caída hice temblar a las naciones. Todos los árboles del Edén, los más selectos y hermosos del Líbano, los que estaban mejor regados, se consolaron en las regiones subterráneas. 17Sus aliados entre las naciones que buscaban protección bajo su sombra también descendieron a los dominios de la muerte, junto con los que habían muerto a filo de espada.
18»”¿A cuál de los árboles del Edén se puede comparar contigo en esplendor y majestad? No obstante, también él descendió con los árboles del Edén a las regiones subterráneas. Allí quedó tendido en medio de los incircuncisos, junto con los que murieron a filo de espada.
»”¡Y así será la muerte del faraón y de todos sus súbditos!, afirma el Señor y Dios”».
1It was the 11th year since King Jehoiachin had been brought to Babylon as a prisoner. On the first day of the third month, a message from the Lord came to me. The Lord said, 2“Son of man, speak to Pharaoh Hophra, the king of Egypt. Also speak to his huge army. Tell him,
“ ‘Who can be compared with your majesty?
3Think about what happened to Assyria.
Once it was like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
It had beautiful branches
that provided shade for the forest.
It grew very high.
Its top was above all the leaves.
4The waters fed it.
Deep springs made it grow tall.
Their streams flowed
all around its base.
They made their way
to all the trees in the fields.
5So it grew higher
than any other tree in the fields.
It grew more limbs.
Its branches grew long.
They spread because they had plenty of water.
6All the birds in the sky
made their nests in its limbs.
All the wild animals
had their babies under its branches.
All the great nations
lived in its shade.
7Its spreading branches
made it majestic and beautiful.
Its roots went down deep
to where there was plenty of water.
8The cedar trees in my garden
were no match for it.
The juniper trees
could not equal its limbs.
The plane trees
could not compare with its branches.
No tree in my garden
could match its beauty.
9I gave it many branches.
They made it beautiful.
All the trees in my Garden of Eden
were jealous of it.’ ”
10So the Lord and King says, “The great cedar tree grew very high. Its top was above all the leaves. It was proud of how tall it was. 11So I handed it over to the Babylonian ruler of the nations. I wanted him to punish it because it was so evil. I decided to get rid of it. 12The Babylonians cut it down and left it there. They did not show it any pity at all. Some of its branches fell on the mountains. Others fell in all the valleys. The branches lay broken in all the stream beds in the land. All the nations on earth came out from under its shade. And they went on their way. 13All the birds settled on the fallen tree. All the wild animals lived among its branches. 14So trees that receive plenty of water must never grow so high that it makes them proud. Their tops must never be above the rest of the leaves. No other trees that receive a lot of water must ever grow that high. They are appointed to die and go down into the earth below. They will join human beings, who go down to the place of the dead.”
15The Lord and King says, “Assyria was like a cedar tree. But I brought it down to the place of the dead. On that day I dried up the deep springs of water and covered them. I held its streams back. I shut off its rich supply of water. Because of that, Lebanon was dressed in gloom as if it were clothes. All the trees in the fields dried up. 16I brought the cedar tree down to the place of the dead. It joined the other nations that go down there. I made the nations on earth shake because of the sound of its fall. Then all the trees of Eden were comforted in the earth below. That included the finest and best trees in Lebanon. And it included all the trees that received plenty of water. 17Others also went down along with the cedar tree into the place of the dead. They included those who had been killed by swords. They also included the armed men among the nations who lived in its shade.
18“Which one of the trees of Eden can be compared with you? What tree is as glorious and majestic as you are? But you too will be brought down to the earth below. There you will join the trees of Eden. You will lie down with those who have not been circumcised. You will be among those who were killed by swords.
“That is what will happen to Pharaoh and his huge armies,” announces the Lord and King.
