Manifestación y juicio del malvado
1Ahora bien, hermanos, en cuanto a la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y a nuestra reunión con él, les pedimos 2que no pierdan la cabeza ni se alarmen por ciertas profecías,2:2 por ciertas profecías. Lit. por espíritu. ni por mensajes orales o escritos supuestamente nuestros, que digan: «¡Ya llegó el día del Señor!». 3No se dejen engañar de ninguna manera, porque primero tiene que llegar la rebelión contra Dios2:3 rebelión contra Dios. Lit. la apostasía. y manifestarse el hombre de maldad,2:3 maldad. Var. pecado. el que está destinado a la destrucción.2:3 que está … destrucción. Lit. el hijo de la destrucción. 4Este se opone y se levanta contra todo lo que lleva el nombre de dios o es objeto de adoración, hasta el punto de adueñarse del templo de Dios y pretender ser Dios.
5¿No recuerdan que ya hablaba de esto cuando estaba con ustedes? 6Bien saben que hay algo que detiene a este hombre, a fin de que él se manifieste a su debido tiempo. 7Es cierto que el misterio de la maldad ya está ejerciendo su poder; pero falta que sea quitado de en medio el que ahora lo detiene. 8Entonces se manifestará aquel malvado, a quien el Señor Jesús derrocará con el soplo de su boca y destruirá con el esplendor de su venida. 9El malvado vendrá, por obra de Satanás, con toda clase de milagros, señales y prodigios falsos. 10Con toda perversidad engañará a los que se pierden por haberse negado a amar la verdad y así ser salvos. 11Por eso Dios les envía un poder engañoso, para que crean en la mentira. 12Así serán condenados todos los que no creyeron en la verdad, sino que se deleitaron en la maldad.
Exhortación a la perseverancia
13Nosotros, en cambio, siempre debemos dar gracias a Dios por ustedes, hermanos amados por el Señor, porque Dios los escogió como los primeros frutos2:13 los escogió … frutos. Var. porque desde el principio Dios los escogió. para ser salvos, mediante la obra santificadora del Espíritu y la fe que tienen en la verdad. 14Para esto Dios los llamó por nuestro evangelio, a fin de que tengan parte en la gloria de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
15Así que, hermanos, sigan firmes y manténganse fieles a las enseñanzas2:15 enseñanzas. Alt. tradiciones. que, oralmente o por carta, hemos transmitido.
16Que nuestro Señor Jesucristo mismo y Dios nuestro Padre, que nos amó y por su gracia nos dio consuelo eterno y una buena esperanza, 17los anime y fortalezca su corazón, para que tanto en palabra como en obra hagan todo lo que sea bueno.
The Man of Sin
1Brothers and sisters, we want to ask you something. It has to do with the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. It concerns the time when we will go to be with him. 2What if you receive a message that is supposed to have come from us? What if it says that the day of the Lord has already come? If it does, we ask you not to become easily upset or alarmed. Don’t be upset whether that message is spoken or written or prophesied. 3Don’t let anyone trick you in any way. That day will not come until people rise up against God. It will not come until the man of sin appears. He is a marked man. He is headed for ruin. 4He will oppose everything that is called God. He will oppose everything that is worshiped. He will give himself power over everything. He will set himself up in God’s temple. He will announce that he himself is God.
5Don’t you remember? When I was with you, I used to tell you these things. 6Now you know what is holding back the man of sin. He is held back so that he can make his appearance at the right time. 7The secret power of sin is already at work. But the one who now holds back that power will keep doing it until he is taken out of the way. 8Then the man of sin will appear. The Lord Jesus will overthrow him with the breath of his mouth. The glorious brightness of Jesus’ coming will destroy the man of sin. 9The coming of the man of sin will fit how Satan works. The man of sin will show his power through all kinds of signs and wonders. These signs and wonders will lead people astray. 10So people who are dying will be fooled by this evil. These people are dying because they refuse to love the truth. The truth would save them. 11So God will fool them completely. Then they will believe the lie. 12Many will not believe the truth. They will take pleasure in evil. They will be judged.
Remain Strong in the Faith
13Brothers and sisters, we should always thank God for you. The Lord loves you. That’s because God chose you as the first to be saved. Salvation comes through the Holy Spirit’s work. He makes people holy. It also comes through believing the truth. 14He chose you to be saved by accepting the good news that we preach. And you will share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15Brothers and sisters, remain strong in the faith. Hold on to what we taught you. We passed our teachings on to you by what we preached and wrote.
16Our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father loved us. By his grace God gave us comfort that will last forever. The hope he gave us is good. May our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father 17comfort your hearts. May they make you strong in every good thing you do and say.
