1Todos los que aún son esclavos deben reconocer que sus amos merecen todo respeto; así evitarán que se hable mal del nombre de Dios y de nuestra enseñanza. 2Los que tienen amos creyentes no deben faltarles al respeto por ser hermanos. Al contrario, deben servirles todavía mejor, porque los que se benefician de sus servicios son creyentes y hermanos queridos. Esto es lo que debes enseñar y recomendar.
El amor al dinero
3Si alguien enseña falsas doctrinas, apartándose de la sana enseñanza de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y de la doctrina que se ciñe a la verdadera religión,6:3 la verdadera religión. Lit. la devoción; también en vv. 5 y 6. 4es un obstinado que nada entiende. Ese tal padece del afán enfermizo de provocar discusiones inútiles que generan envidias, discordias, insultos, sospechas malvadas 5y altercados entre personas de mente depravada, carentes de la verdad. Este es de los que piensan que la religión es un medio de obtener ganancias. 6Es cierto que con la verdadera religión se obtienen grandes ganancias, pero solo si uno está satisfecho con lo que tiene. 7Porque nada trajimos a este mundo y nada podemos llevarnos. 8Así que, si tenemos comida y ropa, contentémonos con eso. 9Los que quieren enriquecerse caen en la tentación y se vuelven esclavos de sus muchos deseos. Estos afanes insensatos y dañinos hunden a la gente en la ruina y en la destrucción. 10Porque el amor al dinero es la raíz de toda clase de males. Por codiciarlo, algunos se han desviado de la fe y se han causado muchísimos sinsabores.
Encargo de Pablo a Timoteo
11Tú, en cambio, hombre de Dios, huye de todo eso y esmérate en seguir la justicia, la devoción, la fe, el amor, la constancia y la humildad. 12Pelea la buena batalla de la fe; haz tuya la vida eterna, a la que fuiste llamado y por la cual hiciste aquella admirable declaración de fe delante de muchos testigos. 13Teniendo a Dios por testigo, el cual da vida a todas las cosas, y a Cristo Jesús, que dio su admirable testimonio delante de Poncio Pilato, te encargo 14que guardes este mandato sin mancha ni reproche hasta la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, 15la cual Dios a su debido tiempo hará que se cumpla.
Al único y bendito Soberano,
Rey de reyes y Señor de señores,
16al único inmortal,
que vive en luz inaccesible,
a quien nadie ha visto ni puede ver,
a él sea el honor y el poder eternamente. Amén.
17A los ricos de este mundo, mándales que no sean arrogantes ni pongan su esperanza en las riquezas, que son tan inseguras, sino en Dios. Él nos provee de todo en abundancia para que lo disfrutemos. 18Mándales que hagan el bien, que sean ricos en buenas obras, generosos y dispuestos a compartir lo que tienen. 19De este modo, atesorarán para sí un seguro fundamento para el futuro y obtendrán la vida verdadera.
20Timoteo, ¡cuida bien lo que se te ha confiado! Evita las discusiones profanas e inútiles y los argumentos de la falsa ciencia. 21Algunos, por abrazarla, se han desviado de la fe.

1All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare6:2 Or and benefit from the service of their slaves.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Final Charge to Timothy
11But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
20Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.
