Un ejército de langostas
1¡Toquen la trompeta en Sión;
den la voz de alarma en mi santo monte!
¡Tiemblen todos los habitantes del país!
Ya viene el día del Señor;
en realidad, ya está cerca.
2Día de tinieblas y oscuridad,
día de nubes y densos nubarrones.
Como la aurora que se extiende sobre los montes,
así avanza un pueblo fuerte y numeroso,
pueblo como nunca lo hubo en la antigüedad
ni lo habrá en las generaciones futuras.
3El fuego devora delante de ellos;
detrás, las llamas arden.
Antes de su llegada, el país se parece al jardín del Edén;
después, queda un desolado desierto.
¡Nada escapa de su poder!
4Tienen aspecto de caballos;
galopan como corceles.
5Al saltar sobre las cumbres de los montes,
producen un estruendo como el de carros de guerra,
como el crepitar del fuego al consumir la hojarasca.
¡Son como un ejército poderoso en formación de batalla!
6Ante él se estremecen las naciones;
todo rostro palidece.
7Atacan como guerreros,
escalan muros como soldados.
Cada uno mantiene la marcha
sin romper la formación.
8No se atropellan entre sí;
cada uno marcha en línea.
Se lanzan entre las flechas
sin romper filas.
9Se abalanzan contra la ciudad,
escalan los muros,
trepan por las casas,
se meten por las ventanas como ladrones.
10Ante este ejército tiembla la tierra
y se estremece el cielo,
el sol y la luna se oscurecen
y las estrellas dejan de brillar.
11Truena la voz del Señor
al frente de su ejército;
son innumerables sus tropas
y poderosos los que ejecutan su palabra.
El día del Señor es grande y terrible.
¿Quién lo podrá resistir?
Exhortación al arrepentimiento
12«Ahora bien», afirma el Señor,
«vuélvanse a mí de todo corazón,
con ayuno, llantos y lamentos».
13Rásguense el corazón
y no las vestiduras.
Vuélvanse al Señor su Dios,
porque él es misericordioso y compasivo,
lento para la ira y lleno de amor,
cambia de parecer y no castiga.
14Tal vez Dios reconsidere y cambie de parecer,
y deje tras de sí una bendición.
Las ofrendas de cereales y las ofrendas líquidas
son del Señor su Dios.
15¡Toquen la trompeta en Sión!
¡Proclamen el ayuno!
¡Convoquen a una asamblea sagrada!
16¡Congreguen al pueblo;
consagren la asamblea!
¡Junten a los ancianos del pueblo,
reúnan a los pequeños
y a los niños de pecho!
¡Que salga de su alcoba el recién casado
y la recién casada, de su cámara nupcial!
17Lloren, sacerdotes, ministros del Señor,
entre la entrada y el altar;
y digan: «Compadécete, Señor, de tu pueblo.
No entregues tu propiedad como objeto de burla,
para que las naciones no se burlen de ella.2:17 no se burlen de ella. Alt. no la sometan.
¿Por qué habrán de decir entre los pueblos:
“Dónde está su Dios?”».
La respuesta del Señor
18Entonces el Señor se llenó de celos por su tierra
y mostró piedad a su pueblo.
19Y respondió el Señor:
«Miren, enviaré cereales, vino nuevo y aceite,
hasta dejarlos plenamente satisfechos;
y nunca más los haré
objeto de burla de las naciones.
20»Alejaré de ustedes al que viene del norte,
arrojándolo hacia una tierra seca y desolada:
lanzaré su vanguardia hacia el mar oriental,
y su retaguardia hacia el mar occidental.2:20 el mar oriental … el mar occidental. Es decir, el mar Muerto y el Mediterráneo.
Subirá su hedor
y se elevará su fetidez».
¡El Señor ha hecho grandes cosas!
21No temas, tierra,
sino alégrate y regocíjate,
porque el Señor ha hecho grandes cosas.
22No teman, animales del campo,
porque los pastizales de la estepa ya reverdecen;
los árboles producen su fruto
y la higuera y la vid dan su riqueza.
23Alégrense, habitantes de Sión,
regocíjense en el Señor su Dios,
porque les ha dado las lluvias de otoño.
Él envía la lluvia,
la de otoño y la de primavera,
como en tiempos pasados.
24Las parcelas se llenarán de grano;
los lagares rebosarán de vino nuevo y de aceite.
25«Yo los compensaré a ustedes
por los años en que todo lo devoró
ese gran ejército de langostas
que envié contra ustedes:
las grandes, las pequeñas,
las jóvenes y los saltamontes.2:25 Véase nota en 1:4.
26Ustedes comerán en abundancia, hasta saciarse,
y alabarán el nombre del Señor su Dios,
que hará maravillas por ustedes.
¡Nunca más será avergonzado mi pueblo!
27Entonces sabrán que yo estoy en medio de Israel,
que yo soy el Señor su Dios,
y no hay otro fuera de mí.
¡Nunca más será avergonzado mi pueblo!
El día del Señor
28»Después de esto,
derramaré mi Espíritu sobre todo ser humano.
Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán,
tendrán sueños los ancianos
y los jóvenes recibirán visiones.
29En esos días derramaré mi Espíritu
aun sobre los siervos y las siervas.
30En el cielo y en la tierra mostraré prodigios:
sangre, fuego y columnas de humo.
31El sol se convertirá en tinieblas
y la luna en sangre
antes que llegue el día del Señor,
día grande y terrible.
32Y todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor será salvo,
porque en el monte Sión y en Jerusalén
habrá salvación,
como lo ha dicho el Señor.
Y entre los sobrevivientes
estarán los llamados del Señor.
The Lord Sends an Army of Locusts
1Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion.
Give a warning on my holy mountain.
Let everyone who lives in the land tremble with fear.
The day of the Lord is coming.
It is very near.
2That day will be dark and sad.
It will be black and cloudy.
A huge army of locusts is coming.
They will spread across the mountains
like the sun when it rises.
There has never been an army like it.
And there will never be another
for all time to come.
3Like fire they eat up everything in their path.
Behind them it looks as if flames have burned the land.
In front of them the land is like the Garden of Eden.
Behind them it is a dry and empty desert.
Nothing escapes them.
4They look like horses.
Like war horses they charge ahead.
5They sound like chariots as they leap over the mountaintops.
They crackle like fire burning up dry weeds.
They are like a mighty army
that is ready for battle.
6When people see them, they tremble with fear.
All their faces turn pale.
7The locusts charge ahead like warriors.
They climb over walls like soldiers.
All of them march in line.
They don’t turn to the right or the left.
8They don’t bump into one another.
Each of them marches straight ahead.
They charge through everything that tries to stop them.
But they still stay in line.
9They attack a city.
They run along its wall.
They climb into houses.
They enter through windows like robbers.
10As they march forward, the earth shakes.
The heavens tremble as they approach.
The sun and moon grow dark.
And the stars stop shining.
11The Lord thunders with his mighty voice
as he leads his army.
He has so many forces they can’t even be counted.
The army that obeys his commands is mighty.
The day of the Lord is great and terrifying.
Who can live through it?
Let Your Hearts Be Broken
12The Lord announces to his people,
“Return to me with all your heart.
There is still time.
Do not eat any food.
Weep and mourn.”
13Don’t just tear your clothes to show how sad you are.
Let your hearts be broken.
Return to the Lord your God.
He is gracious.
He is tender and kind.
He is slow to get angry.
He is full of love.
He won’t bring his judgment.
He won’t destroy you.
14Who knows? He might turn toward you
and not bring his judgment.
He might even give you his blessing.
Then you can bring grain offerings and drink offerings
to the Lord your God.
15Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion.
Announce a holy fast.
Tell the people not to eat anything.
Gather them together for a special service.
16Bring them together.
Set all of them apart to me.
Bring together the elders.
Gather the children and the babies
who are still nursing.
Let the groom leave his bedroom.
Let the bride leave their marriage bed.
17Let the priests who serve the Lord weep.
Let them cry between the temple porch and the altar.
Let them say, “Lord, spare your people.
Don’t let others make fun of them.
Don’t let the nations laugh at them.
Don’t let them tease your people and say,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
The Lord Answers the Prayer of His People
18Then the Lord was concerned for his land.
He took pity on his people.
19He replied,
“I am sending you grain, olive oil and fresh wine.
It will be enough to satisfy you completely.
I will never allow other nations
to make fun of you again.
20“I will drive far away from you
the army that comes from the north.
I will send some of its forces
into a dry and empty land.
Its eastern troops will drown in the Dead Sea.
Its western troops will drown in the Mediterranean Sea.
Their dead bodies will stink.”
The Lord has done great things.
21Land of Judah, don’t be afraid.
Be glad and full of joy.
The Lord has done great things.
22Wild animals, don’t be afraid.
The desert grasslands are turning green again.
The trees are bearing their fruit.
The vines and fig trees are producing rich crops.
23People of Zion, be glad.
Be joyful because of what the Lord your God has done.
He has given you the right amount of rain in the fall.
That’s because he is faithful.
He has sent you plenty of showers.
He has sent fall and spring rains alike,
just as he did before.
24Your threshing floors will be covered with grain.
Olive oil and fresh wine will spill over
from the places where they are stored.
25The Lord says,
“I sent a great army of locusts to attack you.
They included common locusts, giant locusts,
young locusts and other locusts.
I will make up for the years
they ate your crops.
26You will have plenty to eat.
It will satisfy you completely.
Then you will praise me.
I am the Lord your God.
I have done wonderful things for you.
My people will never again be put to shame.
27You will know that I am with you in Israel.
I am the Lord your God.
There is no other God.
So my people will never again be put to shame.
The Day of the Lord Is Coming
28“After that, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will have dreams.
Your young men will have visions.
29In those days I will pour out my Spirit
on those who serve me, men and women alike.
30I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth.
There will be blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
31The sun will become dark.
The moon will turn red like blood.
It will happen before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
32Everyone who calls out to me will be saved.
On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
some of my people will be left alive.
I have chosen them.
That is what I have promised.
