Ezekiel 41

The Inner Temple

1Then he brought me to the [a]nave and measured the side pillars; six cubits wide on each side was the width of the [b]side pillar. The width of the entrance was ten cubits and the [c]sides of the entrance were five cubits on each side. And he measured [d]the length of the nave, forty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits. Then he went [e]inside and measured each side pillar of the doorway, two cubits, and the doorway, six cubits high; and the width of the doorway, seven cubits. He measured its length, twenty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits, before the nave; and he said to me, “This is the most holy place.”

Then he measured the wall of the [f]temple, six cubits; and the width of the side chambers, four cubits, all around about the house on every side. The side chambers were in three stories, [g]one above another, and [h]thirty in each story; and [i]the side chambers extended to the wall which stood on [j]their inward side all around, that they might be fastened, and not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself. The side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story. Because the structure surrounding the temple went upward by stages on all sides of the temple, therefore the width of the temple increased as it went higher; and thus one went up from the lowest story to the highest by way of the [k]second story. I saw also that the house had a raised [l]platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full rod of six [m]long cubits in height. The [n]thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. But the free space between the side chambers belonging to the temple 10 and the outer chambers was twenty cubits in width all around the temple on every side. 11 The [o]doorways of the [p]side chambers toward the free space consisted of one doorway toward the north and another doorway toward the south; and the width of the free space was five cubits all around.

12 The building that was in front of the separate area at the side toward the west was seventy cubits wide; and the wall of the building was five cubits [q]thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.

13 Then he measured the temple, a hundred cubits long; the separate area with the building and its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 Also the width of the front of the temple and that of the separate [r]areas along the east side totaled a hundred cubits.

15 He measured the length of the building [s]along the front of the separate area behind it, with a [t]gallery on each side, a hundred cubits; he also measured the inner nave and the porches of the court. 16 The thresholds, the [u]latticed windows and the [v]galleries round about their three stories, opposite the threshold, were paneled with wood all around, and from the ground to the windows (but the windows were covered), 17 over the entrance, and to the inner house, and on the outside, and on all the wall all around inside and outside, by measurement. 18 It was [w]carved with cherubim and palm trees; and a palm tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces, 19 a man’s face toward the palm tree on one side and a young lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side; they were [x]carved on all the house all around. 20 From the ground to above the entrance cherubim and palm trees were [y]carved, as well as on the wall of the nave.

21 The doorposts of the nave were square; as for the front of the sanctuary, the appearance of one doorpost was like that of the other. 22 The altar was of wood, three cubits high and its length two cubits; its corners, its [z]base and its [aa]sides were of wood. And he said to me, “This is the table that is before the Lord.” 23 The nave and the sanctuary each had a double door. 24 Each of the doors had two leaves, two [ab]swinging leaves; two leaves for one door and two leaves for the other. 25 Also there were [ac]carved on them, on the doors of the nave, cherubim and palm trees like those [ad]carved on the walls; and there was a [ae]threshold of wood on the front of the porch outside. 26 There were [af]latticed windows and palm trees on one side and on the other, on the sides of the porch; thus were the side chambers of the house and the [ag]thresholds.

Ezekiel 41

1Then the man brought me to the main hall and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits[a] on each side.[b] The entrance was ten cubits[c] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits[d] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.[e]

Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits[f] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits[g] wide. And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall. He said to me, ‘This is the Most Holy Place.’

Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room round the temple was four cubits[h] wide. The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty on each level. There were ledges all round the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple. The side rooms all round the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upwards. A stairway went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.

I saw that the temple had a raised base all round it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all round the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all round.

12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits[i] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all round, and its length was ninety cubits.[j]

13 Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits[k] long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.

15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries on each side; it was a hundred cubits.

The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16 as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows and galleries round the three of them – everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered. 17 In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all round the inner and outer sanctuary 18 were carved cherubim and palm trees. Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces: 19 the face of a human being towards the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion towards the palm tree on the other. They were carved all round the whole temple. 20 From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.

21 The main hall had a rectangular door-frame, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22 There was a wooden altar three cubits[l] high and two cubits square;[m] its corners, its base[n] and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, ‘This is the table that is before the Lord.’ 23 Both the main hall and the Most Holy Place had double doors. 24 Each door had two leaves – two hinged leaves for each door. 25 And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26 On the side walls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs.
