사자굴에 던져진 다니엘
1다리우스는 자기가 원하는 대로 전국을 120도로 나누고 각 도에 도지사를 세웠다.
2그리고 그는 도지사를 감독하는 총리 세 사람을 세워 도지사가 총리에게 국정보고를 하게 하여 왕이 나라 일을 보는 데 어려움이 없게 하였다. 그 총리 가운데 한 사람이 바로 다니엘이었다.
3다니엘은 총명하여 모든 면에 도지사들과 다른 총리들보다 뛰어났으므로 왕은 그에게 나라의 모든 일을 맡길 생각이었다.
4그러자 다른 총리들과 도지사들은 다니엘이 국사를 처리하는 데 있어서 잘못한 점을 찾아 그를 고발하려고 했으나 다니엘이 자기 일에 충실하고 잘못이나 부정을 저지른 일이 없으므로 그들은 다니엘에게서 아무 흠을 찾지 못하였다.
5그래서 그들은 “그의 종교와 관련된 일이 아니면 그에게서 잘못을 찾아 그를 고소할 방법이 없다” 고 서로 속삭였다.
6그러고서 그들은 왕에게 가서 이렇게 말하였다. “다리우스왕이시여, 부디 오래오래 사십시오.
7나라의 모든 총리와 총독과 도지사와 고문들과 고관들이 모여서 의논한 결과 대왕께서 한 금령을 내려 그것을 법으로 정해 주실 것을 요청하기로 합의했습니다. 그것은 지금부터 30일 동안 누구든지 왕 외에 어느 신에게나 사람에게 기도하는 자를 사자굴에 던져 넣기로 한 것입니다.
8그러므로 왕이시여, 이제 금령을 내려 조서에 어인을 찍어서 고칠 수 없는 메디아와 페르시아의 법으로 정하십시오.”
9그래서 다리우스왕은 조서에 어인을 찍어 금령을 공포하였다.
10다니엘은 그 조서에 어인이 찍힌 것을 알고도 자기 집으로 돌아가 예루살렘을 향해 창문을 열어 둔 자기 다락방에서 전에 항상 하던 대로 하루 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하며 그의 하나님께 감사하였다.
11다니엘을 모함하려고 하는 자들이 떼를 지어 가서 그가 자기 하나님께 기도하는 것을 보고
12왕에게 가서 말하였다. “왕이시여, 대왕께서는 이미 금령에 어인을 찍어서 지금부터 30일 동안 누구든지 왕 외에 어느 신에게나 사람에게 기도하면 사자굴에 던져 넣기로 하지 않았습니까?” 그러자 왕이 “그것은 아무도 고칠 수 없는 메디아와 페르시아의 법으로 정한 것이다” 하고 대답하였다.
13그때 그들은 “유다에서 포로로 잡혀온 다니엘이 왕과 왕의 금령을 무시하고 하루 세 번씩 기도하고 있습니다” 하였다.
14왕은 이 말을 듣고 몹시 괴로워하며 다니엘을 구할 방법을 찾으려고 해가 질 때까지 고심하고 있었다.
15그때 그들이 다시 왕에게 몰려와 이렇게 말하였다. “왕이시여, 메디아와 페르시아의 법률에 의하면 일단 왕이 공포한 법이나 금령은 고칠 수 없다는 사실을 기억하십시오.”
16그래서 왕은 하는 수 없이 명령을 내리고 말았다. 그러자 그들은 다니엘을 끌어다가 사자굴에 던져 넣었다. 그때 왕은 다니엘에게 “네가 항상 섬기는 네 하나님이 너를 구원하시기 바란다” 하고 말하였다.
17사람들이 돌을 굴려다가 사자굴의 입구를 막았을 때 왕은 어인과 고관들의 인을 쳐서 봉하였다. 이것은 다니엘에 관한 일을 변경할 수 없도록 하기 위해서였다.
18그러고서 왕은 궁전으로 돌아가 여느 때의 흥겨운 풍악도 마다하고 밤새도록 아무것도 먹지 않은 채 뜬눈으로 지냈다.
19다음날 왕은 새벽에 일어나 사자굴로 급히 달려가서
20걱정스러운 목소리로 다니엘을 부르며 이렇게 말하였다. “살아 계신 하나님의 종 다니엘아, 네가 항상 섬기는 하나님이 너를 사자굴에서 구할 수 있었느냐?”
21그때 다니엘이 대답하였다. “왕이시여, 오래오래 사시기 바랍니다.
22나의 하나님이 자기 천사를 보내 사자들의 입을 막았으므로 사자들이 나를 해치지 않았습니다. 그분이 이렇게 하신 것은 나에게 죄가 없음을 아셨기 때문입니다. 왕이시여, 나는 또 왕에게도 잘못한 것이 없습니다.”
23그러자 왕은 너무 기뻐서 어쩔 줄 모르며 다니엘을 사자굴에서 끌어올리라고 명령하였다. 다니엘이 사자굴에서 올라왔을 때 그 몸이 하나도 상하지 않았다. 이것은 그가 자기 하나님을 신뢰하였기 때문이었다.
24그러자 왕은 명령을 내려 다니엘을 고소한 사람들을 끌어오게 하여 그들을 처자들과 함께 사자굴에 던져 넣게 하였다. 그들이 사자굴 밑바닥에 미처 닿기도 전에 사자들이 달려들어 그들의 뼈까지 다 부숴 버렸다.
25그때 다리우스왕은 그의 제국 안에 있는 모든 나라와 민족들에게 다음과 같은 조서를 내렸다. “모든 나라와 민족들에게 평안이 있기를 바란다.
26이제 내가 선언한다. 내 제국 안에 있는 모든 사람들은 다니엘의 하나님을 두려워하며 숭배하라. 그는 살아 계신 하나님이시니 영원히 다스리실 것이며 그의 나라는 망하지 않을 것이요 그의 권세는 무궁할 것이다.
27그는 구원도 하시고 건져내기도 하시며 하늘과 땅에서 놀라운 일과 기적을 행하시는 분이시다. 그가 다니엘을 구출하여 사자의 밥이 되지 않게 하셨다.”
28이렇게 해서 다니엘은 다리우스왕과 페르시아의 키루스황제 시대에 6:28 또는 ‘형통하였다’크게 이름을 떨쳤다.
1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. 3Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4¶ Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.6.6 assembled…: or, came tumultuously 7All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.6.7 decree: or, interdict 8Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.6.8 altereth not: Chaldee, passeth not 9Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10¶ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 13Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day. 14Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him. 15Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. 16Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. 17And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18¶ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.6.18 instruments…: or, table 19Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. 20And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24¶ And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
25¶ Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. 27He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.6.27 power: Chaldee, hand 28So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
