1Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, 2Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. 3Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. 4Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.8.4 very…: Heb. multitude of days 5And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. 6Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts.8.6 marvellous: or, hard, or, difficult 7Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country;8.7 the west…: Heb. the country of the going down of the sun 8And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.
9¶ Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. 10For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour.8.10 there was…: or, the hire of man became nothing 11But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts. 12For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things.8.12 prosperous: Heb. of peace 13And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. 14For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not: 15So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
16¶ These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:8.16 execute…: Heb. judge truth, and the judgment of peace 17And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.
18¶ And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying, 19Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.8.19 feasts: or, solemn, or, set times 20Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: 21And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also.8.21 speedily: or, continually: Heb. going8.21 to pray…: Heb. to intreat the face of 22Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.8.22 to pray…: Heb. to intreat the face of 23Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
Gods belofte van vrede en veiligheid
1Opnieuw sprak de Here van de hemelse legers tegen mij: 2‘Ik ben vol vurige liefde voor Jeruzalem en vol woede ben Ik tegenover haar vijanden. 3Ik zal terugkeren naar mijn land en in Jeruzalem gaan wonen. Jeruzalem zal “Stad van Trouw”, “De Heilige Berg” en “De Berg van de Here van de hemelse legers” worden genoemd.’
4De Here belooft: ‘Jeruzalem zal weer vrede en veiligheid kennen. Er zullen weer ouderen zijn die, leunend op hun stok, door de stad gaan. 5Overal in de stad zullen weer kinderen spelen. 6Al lijkt het in uw ogen ongelooflijk, zou het daarom ook in mijn ogen een onhaalbare zaak zijn?’ vraagt de Here aan het geringe aantal overlevenden van zijn volk.
7‘Kijk,’ zegt de Here van de hemelse legers, ‘Ik ga mijn volk bevrijden uit de landen in het oosten en het westen of waar het zich ook bevindt. 8Ik zal de mensen terugbrengen naar hun eigen land en zij zullen in Jeruzalem wonen. Zij zullen mijn volk zijn en Ik zal hun God zijn, eerlijk en rechtvaardig!’
9De Here van de hemelse legers spoort zijn volk aan met de woorden: ‘Ga door met uw werk en maak het af! Aarzel toch niet langer! De fundamenten van de tempel zijn nu gelegd en u hebt gehoord dat de profeten u verteld hebben dat het herstel van de tempel begonnen is. 10Vóór de aanvang van dit werk viel er voor niemand iets te verdienen en leverde het vee niets op. Wie de stad verliet, kon nooit met zekerheid zeggen dat hij zou terugkeren, want Ik zette alle mensen tegen elkaar op. 11Maar nu is het allemaal anders, nu zal Ik het volk dat de ballingschap overleefde, beter behandelen!’ zegt de Here van de hemelse legers. 12‘Uw gewassen groeien goed, de wijnstokken buigen onder het gewicht van de druiven en het land is vruchtbaar, want er valt ruim voldoende regen. Al deze zegeningen schenk Ik aan het volk dat nog in het land over is. 13Want zoals u een vervloekte bent geweest onder de volken die u omringden, volk van Juda en Israël, zo zult u nu een zegen zijn, want Ik zal u heil en verlossing geven. Wees daarom niet bang en laat de moed niet zakken. Ga door met de herbouw van de tempel. 14Zoals Ik Mij had voorgenomen u kwaad te doen toen uw voorouders mijn toorn opwekten, en Ik geen berouw had van mijn besluit, 15zo heb Ik Mij nu voorgenomen Jeruzalem en de stam Juda te zegenen. Wees daarom niet bang. 16Dit is wat ú moet doen: spreek de waarheid tegen elkaar, laat het bij de rechtspraak eerlijk toegaan en zoek daarbij het beste voor elkaar, 17smeed geen boze plannen tegen elkaar en zweer niet dat iets waar is als het níet zo is! Want al dit soort dingen haat Ik hartgrondig,’ zegt de Here.
18De Here van de hemelse legers stuurde mij nog een boodschap: 19‘Uw traditionele perioden van vasten en rouwen in de vierde, vijfde, zevende en tiende maand zijn nu voorgoed voorbij, vanaf nu zullen het vrolijke feesten worden, maar let op: heb de waarheid en de vrede lief.’
20-21 Dit belooft de Here van de hemelse legers: ‘Mensen uit alle delen van de wereld zullen een pelgrimstocht maken naar Jeruzalem en de stad binnenstromen. Zij komen uit talloze vreemde steden om deze feesten bij te wonen. Zij zullen vrienden uit andere steden uitnodigen met de woorden: “Laten we naar Jeruzalem gaan om de Here te vragen ons te zegenen en Hem te aanbidden. Ik ga! Ga je mee?” 22Ja, talloze volken, waaronder ook machtige naties, zullen naar de Here van de hemelse legers in Jeruzalem komen om te vragen om zijn zegen en hulp.’ 23De Here van de hemelse legers zegt ook: ‘In die tijd zullen tien mannen uit tien verschillende volken een Joodse man bij de mouw grijpen en zeggen: “Wij willen ons bij u aansluiten, want wij hebben gehoord dat God met u is.” ’
