1Se for preciso escolher, que se escolha antes uma boa reputação do que riquezas;
vale mais ser-se estimado do que ter ouro e prata.
2Afinal, tanto o rico como o pobre têm a mesma origem;
ambos são criaturas do Senhor.
3As pessoas prudentes preveem o mal e procuram evitá-lo;
os tolos continuam por diante e vêm a sofrer as consequências.
4A verdadeira humildade e o temor ao Senhor
abrem às pessoas as portas das riquezas, da honra e da vida.
5Os caminhos por que andam os perversos estão cheios de espinhos e de armadilhas;
quem tem amor à sua própria alma afasta-se para longe deles.
6Ensina à criança o caminho por onde deve andar
e quando for velha ainda continuará a andar por ele.
7Os ricos dominam os pobres;
aquele que pede emprestado fica na dependência de quem lhe empresta.
8Quem semear perversidade recolherá males;
as suas armas de violência se encravarão.
9Felizes os que recebem os pobres com bondade;
serão abençoados porque repartiram com eles a sua própria comida.
10Manda embora o escarnecedor, e com ele irá a contenda;
e acabar-se-ão as discussões e os insultos.
11Aquele que dá valor a um coração puro, e cujas falas são sensatas,
terá por seu amigo o rei.
12Os olhos do Senhor velam sobre aquele que tem sabedoria,
mas contraria as palavras do traidor.
13O preguiçoso inventa muitas desculpas. Ele diz:
“Não posso ir trabalhar.
Pode haver um leão lá fora e ainda me arrisco a morrer!”
14A boca das mulheres de má vida é como uma cova profunda;
caem nela aqueles contra quem o Senhor se ira.
15A insensatez é uma característica natural do coração das crianças;
a disciplina e a correção afastará delas esse mal.
16Quem oprime o pobre, para poder enriquecer,
ou para agradar aos ricos, acabará na pobreza.
Trinta conselhos dos sábios
17Ouve atentamente, escuta as palavras dos sábios
e consagra o teu coração a estudar a minha experiência.
18Verás como é bom guardá-las no teu coração
e aplicá-las a tudo o que disseres.
19Para que a tua confiança esteja posta no Senhor,
faço-te saber agora todas estas coisas, a ti, pessoalmente.
20Não é verdade que te tenho escrito já trinta conselhos,
referentes ao conhecimento e à experiência da vida?
21E se o fiz foi para te dar a certeza da verdade
e para que possas responder com essa mesma verdade
a quem vier pedir-te conselhos.

22Não explores o pobre, pelo facto de não ter defesa,
nem oprimas os que vivem aflitos.
23Porque o Senhor defenderá a sua causa, perante a justiça,
e a quem lhes roubar a vida a vida lhes será tirada.
Conselho 2
24Não andes com gente desordeira,
nem acompanhes pessoas violentas.
25Para não vires a aprender os seus modos,
arriscando-te a colocares uma cilada à tua alma.
Conselho 3
26Não sejas dos que, com um simples aperto de mão,
se deixam ficar por fiadores de dívidas alheias.
27Se tu próprio não tens com que pagar,
porque ficarias sujeito a que te venham tirar
até a cama de debaixo de ti?

28Não alteres os marcos que limitam as terras
e que já os teus antepassados fixaram.
Conselho 5
29Tens visto, certamente, as pessoas que trabalham diligentemente;
serão bem sucedidas, os governantes dar-lhe-ão responsabilidades
e não servirão pessoas insignificantes.
