1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle; 2The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying, 3Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,32.3 Nimrah: also called, Beth-nimrah32.3 Shebam: also called, Shibmah32.3 Beon: also called, Baal-meon 4Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle: 5Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.
6¶ And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here? 7And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?32.7 discourage: Heb. break 8Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 9For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10And the LORD’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying, 11Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:32.11 wholly…: Heb. fulfilled after me 12Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD. 13And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. 14And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. 15For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
16¶ And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones: 17But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. 19For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
20¶ And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, 21And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, 22And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. 24Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. 25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. 26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead: 27But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.
28So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel: 29And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession: 30But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. 31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. 32We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours. 33And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
34¶ And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, 35And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,32.35 Jaazer: also called, Jazer 36And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.32.36 Beth-nimrah: also called, Nimrah 37And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim, 38And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.32.38 gave…: Heb. they called by names the names of the cities 39And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it. 40And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein. 41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth-jair. 42And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
L’installation de quelques tribus à l’est du Jourdain
1Les descendants de Ruben et de Gad avaient de très grands troupeaux. Ils constatèrent que les pays de Yaezer et de Galaad convenaient bien à l’élevage. 2Alors ils vinrent trouver Moïse, le prêtre Eléazar et les chefs de la communauté et leur dirent : 3Les villes d’Ataroth, de Dibôn, Yaezer, Nimra, Heshbôn, Elealé, Sebam, Nébo et Beôn32.3 Ces localités se trouvent toutes entre l’Arnon et le Yabboq et faisaient partie du royaume de Sihôn., 4c’est-à-dire ce territoire que l’Eternel a soumis aux Israélites, est un pays favorable à l’élevage. Or, tes serviteurs possèdent de nombreux troupeaux. 5Puis ils ajoutèrent : Si tu veux bien nous accorder une faveur, attribue à tes serviteurs la possession de ce pays et ne nous fais pas traverser le Jourdain.
6Moïse répondit aux membres des deux tribus : Vous voulez rester ici pendant que vos compatriotes vont à la guerre ? 7Pourquoi découragez-vous les Israélites de se rendre dans le pays que l’Eternel leur donne ? 8C’est exactement ce qu’ont fait vos ancêtres quand je les ai envoyés de Qadesh-Barnéa pour explorer le pays32.8 Pour les v. 8-9, voir 13.17-33.. 9Ils sont montés jusqu’à la vallée d’Eshkol, ils ont observé le pays et, à leur retour, ils ont découragé les Israélites d’aller dans le pays que l’Eternel leur destinait. 10L’Eternel s’est mis en colère ce jour-là au point qu’il fit ce serment32.10 Pour les v. 10-13, voir 14.26-35. : 11« Jamais ces hommes qui sont sortis d’Egypte et qui ont aujourd’hui vingt ans et plus ne verront la terre que j’ai promise par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, car ils ne m’ont pas obéi fidèlement, 12excepté Caleb, fils de Yephounné le Qenizien32.12 D’après Gn 15.19 et 36.11, les Qeniziens étaient une peuplade cananéenne, descendante d’Esaü. Les ancêtres de Caleb avaient sans doute des affinités avec cette peuplade (voir Jos 14.6, 14)., et Josué, fils de Noun, qui ont fidèlement obéi à l’Eternel. »
13L’Eternel se mit donc en colère contre Israël, et il les fit errer dans le désert durant quarante années jusqu’à l’extinction de toute la génération qui avait mal agi envers l’Eternel. 14Et maintenant, voilà que vous prenez le relais de vos pères comme une race de pécheurs, pour attiser encore davantage l’ardente colère de l’Eternel contre Israël. 15Car si vous refusez de lui obéir, il vous laissera encore traîner dans ce désert et vous causerez la perte de tout ce peuple.
16– Non, répondirent-ils à Moïse, nous construirons seulement des enclos ici pour nos troupeaux de moutons et de chèvres et des villes pour nos familles. 17Quant à nous, nous nous armerons sans tarder pour marcher à la tête des Israélites, jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons fait entrer dans le territoire qui leur revient. Nos familles seules resteront dans les villes fortifiées où elles seront à l’abri des habitants du pays. 18Nous ne rentrerons pas dans nos foyers avant que chacun des Israélites ait pris possession de l’héritage qui lui revient. 19Mais nous ne posséderons pas de territoire de l’autre côté du Jourdain et au-delà, puisque nous aurons déjà reçu notre patrimoine foncier de ce côté-ci, à l’est du Jourdain.
20Moïse leur répondit : Si vous tenez parole, si vous êtes prêts à combattre en présence de l’Eternel, 21si tous vos guerriers passent le Jourdain devant l’Eternel jusqu’à ce qu’il ait dépossédé ses ennemis devant lui, 22et si vous revenez seulement lorsque le pays sera soumis devant l’Eternel, alors vous aurez satisfait à vos obligations envers lui et envers Israël, et cette région-ci vous appartiendra en pleine propriété avec l’accord de l’Eternel. 23Mais si vous n’agissez pas ainsi, vous péchez contre l’Eternel. Sachez alors que les conséquences de votre péché retomberont sur vous ! 24Construisez-vous donc des villes pour vos familles et des enclos pour vos troupeaux ; puis tenez parole !
25Les descendants de Gad et de Ruben dirent à Moïse : Tes serviteurs obéiront aux ordres de mon seigneur. 26Nos enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail resteront ici dans les villes de Galaad, 27tandis que nous, tes serviteurs, tous ceux qui sont aptes à la guerre, nous passerons le Jourdain devant l’Eternel pour aller en guerre, comme mon seigneur l’a ordonné.
28Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet au prêtre Eléazar, à Josué fils de Noun et aux chefs de tribus des Israélites32.28 Pour les v. 28-32, voir Jos 1.12-15.. 29Il leur dit : Si parmi les descendants de Gad et ceux de Ruben, tous les hommes aptes à la guerre traversent avec vous le Jourdain pour aller au combat devant l’Eternel, une fois que le pays vous sera soumis, vous leur donnerez la région de Galaad en propriété. 30Mais s’ils ne passent pas, prêts à combattre avec vous, ils s’installeront au milieu de vous dans le pays de Canaan.
31Les Rubénites et les Gadites déclarèrent : Nous ferons ce que l’Eternel a ordonné à tes serviteurs. 32Nous passerons équipés pour la bataille devant l’Eternel au pays de Canaan ; mais le territoire que nous posséderons comme patrimoine foncier se trouvera de ce côté-ci du Jourdain.
33Alors Moïse octroya aux descendants de Gad et de Ruben, ainsi qu’à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihôn, roi des Amoréens, et celui d’Og, roi du Basan, c’est-à-dire leur pays avec leurs villes et les terres qui en dépendaient.
34Les hommes de Gad rebâtirent Dibôn, Ataroth, Aroër, 35Atroth-Shophân, Yaezer, Yogbeha, 36Beth-Nimra et Beth-Harân : autant de villes fortifiées avec des enclos pour les moutons et les chèvres.
37Les Rubénites rebâtirent Heshbôn, Elealé et Qiryataïm, 38Nébo et Baal-Meôn, dont les noms furent changés, et Sibma ; ils donnèrent de nouveaux noms aux villes qu’ils rebâtirent.
39Les descendants de Makir, fils de Manassé, envahirent le pays de Galaad32.39 Le nord de ce pays, le sud étant déjà occupé par la tribu de Gad., le conquirent et dépossédèrent les Amoréens qui s’y trouvaient. 40Moïse leur donna le pays de Galaad et ils s’y établirent. 41Yaïr, un autre descendant de Manassé, attaqua plusieurs villages et s’en empara ; il les appela villages de Yaïr32.41 Les villages de Yaïr se trouvent en Transjordanie, au sud du lac de Tibériade (Jg 10.3-5).. 42Nobah attaqua Qenath et s’empara des villes qui en dépendaient ; il leur donna son propre nom.
