Numbers 2:1-34

1And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 2Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.2.2 far…: Heb. over against

3And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah. 4And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. 5And those that do pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and Nethaneel the son of Zuar shall be captain of the children of Issachar. 6And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred. 7Then the tribe of Zebulun: and Eliab the son of Helon shall be captain of the children of Zebulun. 8And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred. 9All that were numbered in the camp of Judah were an hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, throughout their armies. These shall first set forth.

10¶ On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies: and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur. 11And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred. 12And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 13And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred. 14Then the tribe of Gad: and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.2.14 Reuel: also called, Deuel 15And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty. 16All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, throughout their armies. And they shall set forth in the second rank.

17¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place by their standards.

18¶ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies: and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud. 19And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred. 20And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 21And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred. 22Then the tribe of Benjamin: and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni. 23And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred. 24All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred, throughout their armies. And they shall go forward in the third rank.

25¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north side by their armies: and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. 27And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran. 28And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

29¶ Then the tribe of Naphtali: and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan. 30And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred. 31All they that were numbered in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall go hindmost with their standards.

32¶ These are those which were numbered of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers: all those that were numbered of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. 33But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses. 34And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.

Le campement

1L’Eternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron en ces termes : 2Les Israélites camperont chacun près de sa bannière, sous les enseignes de son groupe familial, à une certaine distance autour de la tente de la Rencontre.

3A l’est, campera la tribu de Juda, sous sa bannière, rangée par corps d’armée, sous la direction de son chef Nahshôn, fils d’Amminadab2.3 Les chefs désignés pour présider au recensement (1.5-15) commandent aussi les différentes tribus. ; 4son armée compte un effectif de 74 600 hommes. 5A ses côtés camperont la tribu d’Issacar sous la direction de son chef Netanéel, fils de Tsouar, 6avec un effectif de 54 400 hommes, 7et la tribu de Zabulon sous la direction de son chef Eliab, fils de Hélôn, 8avec un effectif de 57 400 hommes. 9Total des hommes recensés dans le camp de Juda2.9 Juda, Issacar et Zabulon qui constituaient le premier camp étaient tous trois fils de la même mère. Il en est de même du troisième camp. L’avant-garde et l’arrière-garde comprenaient les tribus les plus nombreuses. : 186 400 hommes pour les trois armées. Ils ouvriront la marche.

10Au sud se dressera la bannière du camp de Ruben rangé par corps d’armée, ayant pour chef Elitsour, fils de Shedéour, 11avec un effectif de 46 500 hommes. 12A ses côtés camperont la tribu de Siméon sous la direction de son chef Sheloumiel, fils de Tsourishaddaï, 13avec un effectif de 59 300 hommes, 14et la tribu de Gad sous la direction de Eliasaph, fils de Deouel2.14 D’après plusieurs manuscrits hébreux, le Pentateuque samaritain et la Vulgate, ainsi que Nb 7.42, 47 ; 10.20. La plupart des manuscrits hébreux ont ici Reouel., 15avec un effectif de 45 650 hommes. 16Total des hommes recensés dans le camp de Ruben : 151 450 pour les trois armées. Ils seront les seconds à se mettre en marche.

17Ensuite partira la tente de la Rencontre avec le camp des lévites, au centre des autres camps. Ils partiront dans l’ordre dans lequel ils campent, chacun à son tour sous sa bannière.

18La bannière du camp d’Ephraïm sera dressée à l’occident. Il sera rangé par corps d’armée, ayant pour chef Elishama, fils d’Ammihoud, 19avec un effectif de 40 500 hommes. 20A ses côtés camperont la tribu de Manassé2.20 Les trois tribus descendant de Rachel campaient à l’ouest, la tribu d’Ephraïm commandant cette triade (voir Gn 48.5-20)., sous la direction de son chef Gamliel, fils de Pédahtsour, 21avec un effectif de 32 200 hommes 22et la tribu de Benjamin sous la direction de son chef Abidân, fils de Guideoni, 23avec un effectif de 35 400 hommes. 24Total des hommes recensés dans le camp d’Ephraïm : 108 100 hommes pour les trois armées. Ils partiront en troisième lieu.

25Au nord campera la tribu de Dan rangée par corps d’armée et ayant pour chef Ahiézer, fils d’Ammishaddaï, 26avec un effectif de 62 700 hommes. 27A ses côtés, la tribu d’Aser sous la direction de son chef Paguiel, fils d’Okrân, 28avec un effectif de 41 500 hommes. 29Puis la tribu de Nephtali sous la direction de son chef Ahira, fils d’Enân, 30avec un effectif de 53 400 hommes. 31Total des hommes recensés dans le camp de Dan : 157 600 hommes. Ils partiront en dernier lieu avec leurs bannières.

32Le nombre total des Israélites recensés par groupes familiaux et rangés par corps d’armée était de 603 550 hommes. 33Les lévites ne furent pas recensés avec les autres Israélites, conformément à l’ordre donné par l’Eternel à Moïse.

34Les Israélites firent tout comme l’Eternel avait ordonné à Moïse : ils campaient sous leurs bannières et partaient par familles et par groupes familiaux.
