1And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 2This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke: 3And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face: 4And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times: 5And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn: 6And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer. 7Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. 8And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even. 9And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin. 10And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
11¶ He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.19.11 man: Heb. soul of man 12He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean. 13Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him. 14This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days. 15And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean. 16And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. 17And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:19.17 ashes: Heb. dust19.17 running…: Heb. living waters shall be given 18And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave: 19And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. 20But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean. 21And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even. 22And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.
L’eau de purification
1L’Eternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, en ces termes : 2Voici ce que prescrit la Loi de l’Eternel : Demandez aux Israélites de vous amener une vache rousse, sans défaut et sans tache, qui n’ait pas encore porté le joug. 3Vous la remettrez au prêtre Eléazar. Celui-ci la mènera à l’extérieur du camp et on l’immolera en sa présence. 4Il prendra du sang de la vache avec son doigt, et il en fera sept fois l’aspersion en direction de l’entrée de la tente de la Rencontre. 5Puis on brûlera la vache sous ses yeux : peau, chair, sang et excréments. 6Ensuite, le prêtre prendra du bois de cèdre, de l’hysope et un fil de laine teint en rouge éclatant, et il les jettera au milieu des flammes où se consume la vache. 7Après cela, il lavera ses vêtements et se baignera avant de rentrer dans le camp ; néanmoins il sera rituellement impur jusqu’au soir. 8Celui qui aura brûlé la vache lavera aussi ses vêtements et se baignera, et il sera impur jusqu’au soir. 9Un homme rituellement pur recueillera les cendres de la vache et les déposera hors du camp dans un endroit pur où elles seront conservées pour la communauté des Israélites pour la préparation de l’eau de purification. Cela équivaut à un sacrifice pour le péché19.9 Allusion en Hé 9.13.. 10Celui qui aura recueilli les cendres de la vache lavera aussi ses vêtements et sera impur jusqu’au soir. Ce sera, pour les Israélites aussi bien que pour l’immigré installé au milieu d’eux, une ordonnance en vigueur à perpétuité.
11Celui qui touchera le cadavre d’un homme, quel qu’il soit, sera rituellement impur pendant sept jours. 12S’il se purifie le troisième et le septième jour avec cette eau, il sera pur19.12 D’après les versions anciennes. Le texte hébreu traditionnel a : s’il se purifie le troisième jour avec cette eau, le septième jour, il sera pur., sinon il restera impur. 13Si quelqu’un touche un cadavre et néglige de se purifier, il souille le tabernacle de l’Eternel. Cet homme sera retranché d’Israël, parce que l’eau de purification n’a pas été répandue sur lui ; il est encore souillé, son impureté reste attachée à lui.
14Voici la loi qu’il convient de suivre si quelqu’un meurt dans une tente : tous ceux qui entrent dans la tente comme tous ceux qui se trouvent déjà dans la tente seront impurs pendant sept jours. 15Tout récipient ouvert sur lequel il n’y a pas de couvercle attaché sera impur. 16Si quelqu’un touche dans les champs le cadavre d’un homme tué par un autre ou mort naturellement, ou bien butte sur des ossements humains ou sur une tombe, il sera impur pendant sept jours. 17Pour le purifier, on prendra des cendres de la vache consumée en sacrifice pour le péché, on les mettra dans un récipient et l’on versera dessus de l’eau de source. 18Un homme en état de pureté prendra une branche d’hysope et la trempera dans l’eau, en aspergera la tente où quelqu’un est mort, ainsi que tous les ustensiles et toutes les personnes qui s’y trouvaient. Il fera de même pour celui qui a touché des ossements, le cadavre d’un homme tué par un autre ou mort naturellement, ou une tombe. 19L’homme pur aspergera celui qui est souillé le troisième et le septième jour. Le septième jour, il le purifiera entièrement de sa faute. L’homme impur lavera ses vêtements et se baignera ; et le soir, il sera pur.
20Mais si l’homme qui s’est souillé néglige de se purifier ainsi, il sera retranché de la communauté, car il souille le sanctuaire de l’Eternel. Puisque l’eau de purification n’a pas été répandue sur lui, il reste impur. 21Ce sera pour eux une ordonnance en vigueur à perpétuité. Celui qui aura fait l’aspersion de l’eau de purification lavera ses vêtements, et celui qui touchera cette eau sera impur jusqu’au soir. 22Tout ce que touchera l’homme impur sera impur, et la personne qui le touchera sera impure jusqu’au soir.
