1And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! 3And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? 4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6¶ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: 7And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. 8If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. 9Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.14.9 defence: Heb. shadow 10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? 12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13¶ And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) 14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15¶ Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, 16Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. 17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, 18The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. 19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.14.19 until…: or, hitherto
20And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word: 21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. 22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; 23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:14.23 Surely…: Heb. If they see the land 24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: 29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.14.30 sware: Heb. lifted up my hand 31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.14.33 wander: or, feed 34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.14.34 breach…: or, altering of my purpose 35I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, 37Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. 39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40¶ And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. 41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. 42Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. 43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. 44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
شورش عليه خداوند
1با شنيدن اين خبر، قوم اسرائيل تمام شب با صدای بلند گريستند. 2آنها از دست موسی و هارون شكايت كرده، گفتند: «كاش در مصر مرده بوديم، يا در همين بيابان تلف میشديم، 3زيرا مردن بهتر از اين است كه به سرزمينی كه در پيش داريم برويم! در آنجا خداوند ما را هلاک میكند و زنان و بچههايمان اسير میشوند. بياييد به مصر بازگرديم.» 4پس به يكديگر گفتند: «بياييد يک رهبر انتخاب كنيم تا ما را به مصر بازگرداند.»
5موسی و هارون در برابر قوم اسرائيل به خاک افتادند. 6يوشع پسر نون و كاليب پسر يَفُنّه كه جزو كسانی بودند كه به بررسی سرزمين كنعان رفته بودند، جامهٔ خود را چاک زدند 7و به همهٔ قوم خطاب كرده، گفتند: «سرزمينی كه بررسی كرديم سرزمين بسيار خوبی است. 8اگر خداوند از ما راضی است، ما را به سلامت به اين سرزمين حاصلخيز خواهد رساند و آن را به ما خواهد داد. 9پس بر ضد خداوند قيام نكنيد و از مردم آن سرزمين نترسيد، چون شكست دادن آنها برای ما مثل آب خوردن است. خداوند با ماست، ولی آنان پشتيبانی ندارند. از آنها نترسيد!»
10-11ولی قوم اسرائيل به عوض قبول اين پيشنهاد، ايشان را تهديد به مرگ كردند كه ناگاه حضور پرجلال خداوند در خيمهٔ عبادت بر تمام قوم نمايان گرديد و خداوند به موسی فرمود: «تا به كی اين قوم مرا اهانت میكنند؟ آيا بعد از همهٔ اين معجزاتی كه در ميان آنها كردهام باز به من ايمان نمیآورند؟ 12من ايشان را با بلايی هلاک میكنم و از تو قومی بزرگتر و نيرومندتر بوجود میآورم.»
13موسی به خداوند عرض كرد: «اما وقتی مصریان اين را بشنوند چه خواهند گفت؟ آنها خوب میدانند كه تو با چه قدرت عظيمی قوم خود را نجات دادی. 14مصریها اين موضوع را برای ساكنان سرزمين كنعان تعريف خواهند كرد. کنعانیها اطلاع دارند كه تو، ای خداوند، با ما هستی و خود را در ابری كه بالای سر ماست ظاهر میكنی و با ستون ابر و آتش، شب و روز ما را هدايت مینمايی. 15حال اگر تمام قوم خود را بكشی، مردمی كه شهرت تو را شنيدهاند خواهند گفت: 16خداوند ناچار شد آنها را در بيابان بكشد، چون نتوانست اين قوم را به سرزمينی كه به آنها وعده داده بود برساند.
17-18«التماس میكنم قدرت عظيمت را با بخشيدن گناهان ما نمايان ساخته، محبت عظيم خود را به ما نشان دهی. بر ما خشم نگير و ما را ببخش هر چند گفتهای كه گناه را بدون سزا نمیگذاری و به خاطر گناه پدران، فرزندان را تا نسل سوم و چهارم مجازات میكنی. 19خداوندا، از تو استدعا میكنم گناهان اين قوم را به خاطر محبت عظيم خود ببخشی همچنانكه از روزی كه سرزمين مصر را پشت سر گذاشتيم آنها را مورد عفو خود قرار دادهای.»
20-21پس خداوند فرمود: «من آنها را چنانكه استدعا كردهای میبخشم. ولی به حيات خودم و به حضور پرجلالم كه زمين را پر كرده است سوگند ياد میكنم كه 22-23هيچكدام از آنانی كه جلال و معجزات مرا در مصر و در بيابان ديدهاند و بارها از توكل نمودن و اطاعت كردن سر باز زدهاند حتی موفق به ديدن سرزمينی كه به اجدادشان وعده دادهام نخواهند شد. هر كه مرا اهانت كند سرزمين موعود را نخواهد ديد. 24ولی خدمتگزار من كاليب شخصيت ديگری دارد و پيوسته از صميم قلب مرا اطاعت كرده است. او را به سرزمينی كه برای بررسی آن رفته بود خواهم برد و نسل او مالک آن خواهد شد. 25حال كه قوم اسرائيل تا اين حد از عماليقیها و كنعانیهای ساكن درهها میترسند پس بهتر است فردا از سمت دريای سرخ به بيابان مراجعت كنيد.»
26سپس خداوند به موسی و هارون گفت: 27«اين قوم بدكار و شرور تا به كی از من شكايت میكنند؟ تا به كی بايد به غرغر آنها گوش دهم؟ 28به ايشان بگو كه خداوند به حيات خود قسم میخورد كه آنچه را كه از آن میترسيديد به سرتان بياورد. 29همهٔ شما در اين بيابان خواهيد مرد. حتی يک نفر از شما كه بيست سال به بالا دارد و از دست من شكايت كرده است، 30وارد سرزمين موعود نخواهد شد. فقط كاليب پسر يَفُنّه و يوشع پسر نون اجازهٔ ورود به آنجا را دارند.
31«شما گفتيد كه فرزندانتان اسير ساكنان آن سرزمين میشوند؛ ولی برعكس، من آنها را به سلامت به آن سرزمين میبرم و ايشان مالک سرزمينی خواهند شد كه شما آن را رد كرديد. 32اما لاشههای شما در اين بيابان خواهد افتاد. 33فرزندانتان به خاطر بیايمانی شما چهل سال در اين بيابان سرگردان خواهند بود تا آخرين نفر شما در بيابان بميرد.
34-35«همانطور كه افراد شما مدت چهل روز سرزمين موعود را بررسی كردند، شما نيز مدت چهل سال در بيابان سرگردان خواهيد بود، يعنی يک سال برای هر روز، و به اين ترتيب چوب گناهان خود را خواهيد خورد و خواهيد فهميد كه مخالفت با من چه سزايی دارد. شما ای قوم شرور كه بر ضد من جمع شدهايد در اين بيابان خواهيد مرد. من كه خداوند هستم اين را گفتهام.»
36-38افرادی كه برای بررسی سرزمين كنعان رفته بودند با ايجاد ترس و وحشت در دل مردم آنها را به طغيان عليه خداوند برانگيختند، پس خداوند بلايی فرستاده، آنها را هلاک كرد. از بين اين افراد فقط يوشع و كاليب زنده ماندند.
39وقتی موسی سخنان خداوند را به گوش قوم اسرائيل رسانيد، آنها به تلخی گريستند. 40روز بعد، صبح زود آنها برخاسته، روانهٔ سرزمين موعود شدند. آنها میگفتند: «ما میدانيم كه گناه كردهايم، ولی حالا آمادهايم به سوی سرزمينی برويم كه خداوند به ما وعده داده است.»
41موسی گفت: «اما شما با اين كارتان از فرمان خداوند در مورد بازگشت به بيابان سرپيچی میكنيد، پس بدانيد كه موفق نخواهيد شد. 42نرويد، زيرا دشمنانتان شما را شكست خواهند داد، چون خداوند با شما نيست. 43شما با عماليقیها و كنعانیها روبرو شده، در جنگ كشته خواهيد شد. خداوند با شما نخواهد بود، زيرا شما از پيروی او برگشتهايد.»
44ولی آنها به سخنان موسی توجهی نكردند و با اينكه صندوق عهد خداوند و موسی از اردوگاه حركت نكرده بودند، آنها خودسرانه روانهٔ سرزمين موعود شدند. 45آنگاه عماليقیها و كنعانیهای ساكن كوهستان، پايين آمدند و به قوم اسرائيل حمله كرده، آنان را شكست دادند و تا حرما تعقيب نمودند.
