1Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) 2That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. 3And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? 4Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. 5Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; 6Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.6.6 Gashmu: also called, Geshem 7And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. 8Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. 9For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee. 11And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in. 12And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. 14My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15¶ So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. 16And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17¶ Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.6.17 sent…: Heb. multiplied their letters passing to Tobiah 18For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. 19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. Nueva oposición de los enemigos
1Sambalat, Tobías, Guesén el árabe y el resto de nuestros enemigos se enteraron de que yo había reconstruido la muralla, y de que se habían cerrado las brechas (aunque todavía no se habían puesto las puertas en su sitio). 2Entonces Sambalat y Guesén me enviaron este mensaje: «Tenemos que reunirnos contigo en alguna de las poblaciones del valle de Ono». En realidad, lo que planeaban era hacerme daño. 3Así que envié unos mensajeros a decirles: «Estoy ocupado en una gran obra, y no puedo ir. Si bajara yo a reunirme con vosotros, la obra se vería interrumpida». 4Cuatro veces me enviaron este mensaje, y otras tantas les respondí lo mismo. 5La quinta vez Sambalat me envió, por medio de uno de sus siervos, el mismo mensaje en una carta abierta, 6que a la letra decía:
«Corre el rumor entre la gente —y Guesén6:6 Guesén. Lit. Gasmu (variante de este nombre). lo asegura— de que tú y los judíos estáis construyendo la muralla porque tenéis planes de rebelaros. Según tal rumor, tú pretendes ser su rey, 7y has nombrado profetas para que te proclamen rey en Jerusalén y se declare: “¡Tenemos rey en Judá!” Por eso, ven y hablemos de este asunto, antes de que todo esto llegue a oídos del rey».
8Yo envié a decirle: «Nada de lo que dices es cierto. Todo esto es pura invención tuya».
9En realidad, lo que pretendían era asustarnos. Pensaban desanimarnos, para que no termináramos la obra.
«Y ahora, Señor, ¡fortalece mis manos!»
10Fui entonces a la casa de Semaías, hijo de Delaías y nieto de Mehitabel, que se había encerrado en su casa. Él me dijo:
«Reunámonos a puerta cerrada
en la casa de Dios,
en el interior del templo,
porque vendrán a matarte.
¡Sí, esta noche te quitarán la vida!»
11Pero yo le respondí:
―¡Yo no soy de los que huyen! ¡Los hombres como yo no corren a esconderse en el templo para salvar la vida! ¡No me esconderé!
12Y es que me di cuenta de que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que se las daba de profeta porque Sambalat y Tobías lo habían sobornado. 13En efecto, le habían pagado para intimidarme y hacerme pecar siguiendo su consejo. De este modo, podrían hablar mal de mí y desprestigiarme.
14«¡Dios mío, recuerda las intrigas de Sambalat y Tobías! ¡Recuerda también a la profetisa Noadías y a los otros profetas que quisieron intimidarme!»
Termina la reconstrucción de la muralla
15La muralla se terminó el día veinticinco del mes de elul. Su reconstrucción había durado cincuenta y dos días. 16Cuando todos nuestros enemigos se enteraron de esto, las naciones vecinas se sintieron humilladas, pues reconocieron que ese trabajo se había hecho con la ayuda de nuestro Dios.
17En aquellos días los nobles de Judá se mantuvieron en estrecho contacto con Tobías, 18pues muchos judíos estaban aliados con él en vista de que era yerno de Secanías hijo de Araj, y de que su hijo Johanán era yerno de Mesulán hijo de Berequías. 19En mi presencia hablaban bien de mí, pero luego le comunicaban todo lo que yo decía. Tobías, por su parte, trataba de intimidarme con sus cartas.
