15¶ In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. Nehemia roept de Israëlieten ter verantwoording
1In die tijd werd het volk voorgelezen uit de wetten van Mozes. Zij ontdekten daarin de bepaling dat Ammonieten en Moabieten zich niet bij de gemeenschap van God mochten aansluiten. 2De reden van dit verbod was dat zij destijds het volk Israël geen gastvrijheid hadden betoond. Zij hadden zelfs iets veel ergers gedaan: zij hadden Bileam gehuurd om Israël te vervloeken, maar onze God had de vervloeking in een zegen veranderd. 3Meteen nadat deze regel was voorgelezen, werden alle vreemdelingen uit de bijeenkomst verwijderd.
4-5 Enige tijd voor deze gebeurtenis had de priester Eljasib voor zijn vriend Tobia een prachtig vertrek in een van de voorraadkamers laten inrichten. Eljasib was aangesteld als beheerder van de voorraadkamers in de tempel. Vroeger werd die kamer gebruikt als opslagruimte voor spijsoffers, wierook, schalen en ook voor de tienden van het koren, nieuwe wijn en olijfolie. Volgens een bepaling van Mozes was dit alles bestemd voor de Levieten, zangers en poortwachters. De priesters ontvingen andere speciale bijdragen. 6Toen Eljasib dat deed, was ik niet in Jeruzalem, maar in Babel. In het tweeëndertigste regeringsjaar van koning Arthahsasta was ik namelijk teruggekeerd. Later kreeg ik opnieuw toestemming naar Jeruzalem te reizen. 7Bij mijn aankomst in Jeruzalem hoorde ik iets verschrikkelijks: Eljasib had voor Tobia een kamer in het tempelcomplex ingericht! 8Ik was hevig verontwaardigd en smeet alle spullen van Tobia de kamer uit. 9Ik gaf opdracht de kamer grondig schoon te maken en liet daarna de tempelschalen, spijsoffers en de wierook terugzetten.
10Ook hoorde ik nog iets anders: de Levieten hadden niet ontvangen wat hun wettelijk toekwam! Daarom waren zij en de zangers die de erediensten behoorden te leiden, teruggegaan naar hun eigen akkers. 11Onmiddellijk riep ik de leiders ter verantwoording. ‘Waarom wordt de tempel aan zijn lot overgelaten?’ zei ik boos. Toen liet ik alle Levieten terugroepen en droeg hun hun eigenlijke taak weer op. 12Daarna begonnen de mensen uit Juda, net als vroeger het tiende deel van hun koren, nieuwe wijn en olijfolie naar de voorraadkamers van de tempel te brengen. 13Ik gaf de priester Selemja, de geestelijk leider Zadok en de Leviet Pedaja de verantwoordelijkheid voor het beheer over de voorraadkamers. Ik stelde Hanan, de zoon van Zakkur, de zoon van Mattanja, aan als hun helper. Deze vier mannen stonden als zeer betrouwbaar bekend. Het was hun taak de ingekomen bijdragen eerlijk te verdelen onder de Levieten.
14O God, vergeet al het goede niet dat ik gedaan heb voor uw tempel en de eredienst.
15In die tijd zag ik dat sommige Judeeërs op de sabbat in de wijnpersen werkten. Zij haalden ook vrachten koren binnen op hun ezels en lieten hun ezels wijn, druiven, vijgen en andere producten dragen. Zij wilden ze die dag in Jeruzalem verkopen. Ik kwam hiertegen openlijk in verzet. 16Enkele mannen uit Tyrus die in Jeruzalem woonden, boden vis en andere waar te koop aan op de sabbat en er waren mensen die het kochten! 17Toen vroeg ik de leiders van Juda: ‘Waarom schendt u de sabbat? 18Herinnert u zich niet meer dat uw vaders dit ook hebben gedaan en dat onze God daarom al die ellende over ons en onze stad heeft laten komen? Moet ons volk nog strenger worden gestraft, omdat u toestaat dat de sabbat wordt ontheiligd?’
19Ik bepaalde dat vanaf dat moment de stadspoorten moesten worden gesloten zodra het vrijdagavond donker werd. En ze mochten pas weer geopend worden wanneer de sabbat voorbij was. Ik liet de poorten bewaken door een paar van mijn dienaren. Zo wilde ik voorkomen dat op de sabbat koopwaar Jeruzalem kon binnenkomen. 20De handelaars en de andere kooplui overnachtten een- of tweemaal buiten Jeruzalem. 21Maar toen zei ik dreigend: ‘Waarom overnacht u daar bij de muur? Als dat nog één keer voorkomt, laat ik u arresteren!’ Dat was de laatste keer dat zij er op de sabbat waren. 22Daarna gaf ik de Levieten opdracht de reiniging te ondergaan en de poorten te bewaken, zodat niemand meer de sabbat kon schenden. O God, vergeet ook deze goede daad niet! Heb medelijden met mij, want U bent goed en liefdevol!
23In diezelfde tijd zag ik dat enkele Judeeërs waren getrouwd met vrouwen uit Asdod, Ammon of Moab. 24Veel van hun kinderen spraken alleen de taal van Asdod of een of andere vreemde taal, maar kenden geen woord Judees. 25Daarom riep ik ook deze Judeeërs ter verantwoording, vervloekte hen, sloeg enkelen en trok hun haren uit. Ik liet hen bij God zweren dat zij en hun kinderen nooit met niet-Judeeërs zouden trouwen. 26‘Was dit niet precies de aanleiding voor de zonde die koning Salomo beging?’ riep ik uit. ‘Er was op de hele wereld geen vorst zoals hij en God hield veel van hem en maakte hem koning over heel Israël. Maar toch brachten vreemde vrouwen hem ertoe afgoden te aanbidden. 27Denkt u dat wij u zullen toestaan in dezelfde zonde te vervallen? U bent God ongehoorzaam geweest door met vreemde vrouwen te trouwen!’
28Een van de zonen van Jojada, de zoon van de hogepriester Eljasib, was een schoonzoon van de Horoniet Sanballat. Daarom joeg ik hem de tempel uit.
29O God, vergeet niet dat zij het priesterschap en de plechtige beloften van de priesters en de Levieten hebben ontheiligd.
30Zo zuiverde ik ons volk van alle vreemde invloeden en droeg de priesters en Levieten ieder hun eigen taak op. 31Ik zorgde er ook voor dat het hout voor het altaar op vaste tijden werd geleverd en dat men het eerstgeboren vee en de opbrengst van de eerste oogst naar de tempel bracht. O God, vergeet mijn goede daden niet.
