28¶ And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding; 29They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;10.29 by: Heb. by the hand of 30And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons: 31And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.10.31 every…: Heb. every hand
32Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God; 33For the shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God. 34And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law: 35And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD: 36Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God: 37And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage. 38And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house. 39For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

29Se joignirent à eux le reste des Israélites, des prêtres, des lévites, les portiers, les musiciens, les desservants du Temple, tous ceux qui s’étaient séparés des peuples étrangers pour suivre la Loi de Dieu, de même que leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs filles et tous ceux qui étaient en âge de comprendre.
Contenu de l’engagement
30Tous donnèrent leur soutien aux compatriotes les plus considérés d’entre eux. Ils promirent et s’engagèrent par serment à vivre en accord avec la Loi de Dieu donnée par l’intermédiaire de Moïse, son serviteur, à obéir à tous les commandements de l’Eternel, notre Seigneur, à ses articles de droit et à ses ordonnances et à les appliquer.
31– Nous nous engageons en particulier, dirent-ils, à ne pas donner nos filles en mariage aux peuples étrangers qui sont dans le pays et à ne pas faire épouser leurs filles par nos fils10.31 Voir Ex 34.16 ; Dt 7.3. ; 32et à ne rien acheter le jour du sabbat et les jours de fête aux gens du pays si, ces jours-là, ils apportent des marchandises et toutes sortes de denrées à vendre. Tous les sept ans, nous laisserons reposer la terre et nous annulerons toutes les dettes10.32 Voir Ex 23.10-11 ; Lv 25.1-7 ; Dt 15.1-2.. 33De plus, nous nous imposons comme règle de donner obligatoirement chaque année une pièce d’argent de quatre grammes pour l’entretien et le culte du temple de notre Dieu10.33 Voir Ex 30.11-16., 34pour les pains exposés devant l’Eternel, pour l’offrande permanente, pour l’holocauste perpétuel et celui des jours de sabbat, des nouvelles lunes et des fêtes, pour les choses consacrées, pour les sacrifices d’expiation des péchés d’Israël, et pour tout ce qui se fait dans le temple de notre Dieu.
35Nous avons aussi tiré au sort quelles familles de prêtres, de lévites et de gens du peuple devaient apporter chaque année à date fixe au temple de notre Dieu, le bois destiné à brûler sur l’autel de l’Eternel, notre Dieu, comme cela est écrit dans la Loi.
36Nous prenons aussi l’engagement d’apporter tous les ans au temple de l’Eternel les premières récoltes de notre sol et les premiers fruits de tous nos arbres10.36 Voir Ex 23.19 ; 34.26 ; Dt 26.2., 37d’y présenter les premiers-nés de nos fils et de notre bétail, comme il est écrit dans la Loi10.37 Voir Ex 13.1-2., et d’amener au temple de notre Dieu les premiers-nés de notre petit et de notre gros bétail, pour les remettre aux prêtres qui assurent le service dans le temple de notre Dieu. 38Nous apporterons aux prêtres, dans les salles de notre Dieu10.38 Locaux aménagés dans les parvis du Temple pour stocker les réserves d’argent et d’or ainsi que les ustensiles sacrés (voir 12.44 ; 13.4-5, 9 ; Esd 8.28-30)., la pâte faite avec notre première farine, nos offrandes, des fruits de tous les arbres, du vin nouveau, de l’huile, et nous remettrons aux lévites la dixième partie des produits de nos terres. Ils viendront eux-mêmes prélever cette dîme dans toutes les localités où nous travaillons10.38 Voir Nb 15.18-21 ; 18.21-24.. 39Un prêtre, descendant d’Aaron, accompagnera les lévites quand ceux-ci prélèveront la dîme, et ceux-ci apporteront la dîme de la dîme au temple de notre Dieu, dans les salles de l’annexe qui sert d’entrepôt. 40Car les Israélites et les lévites apporteront dans ces salles leurs offrandes de blé, de vin nouveau et d’huile ; c’est dans ces locaux que sont entreposés les objets du sanctuaire et que se tiendront les prêtres qui font le service, les portiers et les musiciens. Ainsi, nous ne négligerons pas le temple de notre Dieu.
