1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchæus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. 3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. 4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. 6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. 7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. 8And Zacchæus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 11And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. 12He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. 14But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. 15And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. 17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. 18And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. 19And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. 20And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. 22And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: 23Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? 24And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. 25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) 26For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. 27But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
28¶ And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. 29And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 30Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. 31And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. 32And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. 33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34And they said, The Lord hath need of him. 35And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. 36And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. 37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
41¶ And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. 45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. 47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, 48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

ザアカイの救い
1-2それからイエスはエリコに入り、町をお通りになりました。この町には、ローマに収める税金を取り立てる仕事をしているザアカイという男がいました。取税人の中でもとりわけ権力をふるっていた大金持ちでした。 3このザアカイも、ひと目イエスを見ようと思いましたが、背が低かったので、いくら背伸びをしても、人垣のうしろからは何も見えません。 4そこで、ずっと先のほうに走って行き、道ばたにあったいちじく桑の木によじ登って、見下ろしていました。 5やがて、そこへ差しかかったイエスは足を止め、ザアカイを見上げると、「ザアカイ。早く降りてきなさい。今晩はあなたの家に泊めてもらうつもりでいますから」と言われました。 6ザアカイはびっくりして、急いで降りると、大喜びでイエスを家に迎えました。 7これを見ていた人々の心中は、おだやかではありません。「なにも、あの札つきの悪党の家の客にならなくても……」と言って、つぶやきました。 8しかし、ザアカイは主の前でこう告白しました。「先生。今からは、財産の半分を貧しい人たちに分けてあげます。税金を取り過ぎた人たちには、四倍にして払い戻します。」 9-10イエスは言われました。「その告白こそ、今日この家に救いが来たことのあかしです。この人も迷い出たアブラハムの子どもの一人なのだから。メシヤ（救い主）のわたしは、このような人を捜し出して救うために来たのです。」
11イエスがいよいよエルサレムに近づくのを見て、今すぐにでも神の国が実現するのではないか、と早合点した人々がいました。その誤解を正そうと、イエスは一つのたとえ話をなさいました。 12「ある所に身分の高い人が住んでいました。やがてその地方の王に任命されるため、遠くの都に出かけることになりました。 13そこで、出発前に十人の家来を呼び寄せ、留守中に事業を始めるように、めいめいに一ミナ（一ミナは当時の約百日分の賃金に当たる）ずつ渡しました。 14ところがそこの住民の中には、その人が王になるのを快く思わない人々があり、反対の声を送りつけました。 15さて、その人は王位を受けて帰ると、さっそく資金を預けた家来たちを呼び集め、報告をさせました。 16最初の家来は、元金の十倍というすばらしい利益をあげたことを報告しました。 17王は非常に喜び、『よくやった！ 感心なやつだ。少しばかりのものにも忠実に励んでくれた。ほうびに、十の町を治めさせよう』と言いました。 18次の家来が進み出て、元金の五倍の利益をあげたことを報告しました。 19『よくやった！ おまえには五つの町を治めてもらおう。』王は上きげんで言いました。 20ところが、三番目の家来は、預かった資金をそっくりそのまま差し出すではありませんか。『私はお金を大切に保管しておきました。 21せっかくもうけても、横取りされてしまうのではつまりません。あなたはほんとうにひどい方で、ご自分のものでないものまで取り立て、他人の作った穀物さえ取り上げる方ですから。』 22王は激しく怒って言いました。『なんて悪いやつだ！ わしが、そんなにひどい人間だと言うのか。それほどよくわかっていたのなら、 23なぜ銀行に預けておかなかったのか。そうすれば、利息ぐらいついたのに。』 24王は側近の者たちに、『さあ、彼から金を取り上げ、一番多くもうけた者に与えなさい』と命じました。 25『ですが王様。あの者はもうすでに、たくさん持っていますが。』 26王は言いました。『そのとおり。しかし、持っている者はさらに多く与えられ、持っていない者は、そのわずかな物さえ失ってしまうのだ。 27それから、謀反を起こした者たちはすぐここに連れて来て、わしの目の前で殺してしまえ。』」
エルサレムを目前にして
28話を終えると、イエスは先頭に立ち、エルサレムに向かわれました。
29一行がオリーブ山のふもとのベテパゲとベタニヤの村に近づいた時、イエスは、先に二人の弟子を使いに出して、こう指示されました。 30「さあ、あの村へ行って、道ばたにつないであるろばの子を捜しなさい。まだだれも乗ったことのないろばの子です。見つけたら、綱をほどいて連れて来るのです。 31もしだれかにとがめられたら、『主がお入用なのです』とだけ答えなさい。」 32二人は、言われたとおりろばの子を見つけました。 33綱をほどいていると、持ち主が来て、「何をしているのだ。おれたちのろばの子をどうしようというのだ」と聞きただしました。 34弟子たちは、「主がお入用なのです」と答え、 35ろばの子を連れて来ました。そして、その背中に自分たちの上着を敷き、イエスをお乗せしました。 36-37イエスがろばの子に乗って進んで行かれると、大ぜいの人が次々と上着を脱ぎ、道に敷いて並べました。この一団がオリーブ山のふもとに差しかかった時、群衆の中から大きな声が上がりました。イエスが行われたすばらしい奇跡のことで、神を賛美し始めたのです。
38「神がお立てくださったわれらの王に
祝福があるように。
天よ、喜べ。
いと高き天で、神に栄光があるように。」
39群衆の中にいたパリサイ人たちは、これが気に入りません。「先生。あんなことを言ってます。しかってください。」 40ところが、イエスはお答えになりました。「その人たちが黙っても、道ばたの石が叫びだします。」
41さらにエルサレムに近づいた時、イエスは都をごらんになり、都のために涙をこぼされました。 42「永遠の平和がすぐ手の届くところにあったのに、この町はそれをはねつけてしまいました。もう遅すぎます。 43敵が城壁に土塁を築き、町を包囲し、攻め寄せ、 44子どもたちもろとも地面にたたきつけるでしょう。一つの石もほかの石の上に残らないほど、完全に破壊されます。この町は神の訪れの時を知らなかったからです。」
神殿での出来事
45このあと、イエスは宮（神殿）に入り、境内で商売していた者たちを追い出しにかかりました。そして、強い調子で言われました。 46「聖書に、『わたしの家（神殿）は祈りの家と呼ばれる』（イザヤ56・7）と、はっきり書いてあるではありませんか。それなのに、あなたがたは強盗の巣にしてしまったのです。」
47その日からイエスは、毎日、宮で教え始められました。一方、祭司長や他の宗教的指導者、それに町の実力者たちは、イエスを殺すうまい方法はないかと、機会をねらっていましたが、 48手出しができませんでした。民衆がみな、イエスを英雄視し、イエスの話に熱心に耳を傾けていたからです。
