10The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground. 11Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.2.11 swoon: or, faint 12They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom. 13What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? 14Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment. 15All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?2.15 by: Heb. by the way 16All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it. 17The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. 18Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease. 19Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.
20¶ Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?2.20 of a span…: or, swaddled with their hands? 21The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied. 22Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD’s anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.

神の怒りの理由
1主の怒りの雲がエルサレムを覆いました。
イスラエルで最も美しい町は、ちりの中に伏し、
主の命令によって天から投げ落とされました。
御怒りの燃え上がる日になると、
神はご自分の宮にさえ、
一かけらのあわれみもかけませんでした。
2主は容赦なく、イスラエル中の家を倒し、
怒りにまかせて、すべての要塞と城壁を壊しました。
この国を、支配者もろとも地にたたきつけたのです。
3イスラエルの力は、主の憤りの前に、
あえなく消滅します。
主は敵が攻めて来た時、擁護から手を引きました。
神は猛り狂う火のように、
イスラエルを焼き尽くします。
4神はご自分の民に向けて、
まるで敵でもあるかのように弓を引きます。
主の御力は彼らに向かい、
えり抜きの若者たちを虐殺し、
憤りの火を注ぎます。
5主は、敵のようになって、
イスラエルを地上から抹殺し、
その要塞と宮殿を破壊しました。
こうして、悲しみと涙が
エルサレムの受ける分となったのです。
6主は、庭先の木の枝と葉で作ったあばら屋のように、
ご自分の神殿を手荒く壊しました。
もう例祭と安息日を守ることができません。
王も、祭司も、主の激しい怒りの前に倒れます。
7主はご自分の祭壇から顔を背けました。
形ばかりの礼拝に失望したからです。
主は宮殿を敵の手に渡しました。
彼らは、例祭の日にイスラエル人がしたように、
神殿で飲み騒ぎました。
8主はエルサレムを滅ぼそうと決め、
「破壊」という物差しでこの都を測ったのです。
それで、とりでも城壁も音を立ててくずれました。
9エルサレムの門はもう役に立ちません。
主の手にかかって、錠もかんぬきも壊されたからです。
王も首長も奴隷となり、引かれて行きました。
そこには神殿もなく、
生活の指針となる律法もなく、
預言者の幻もありません。
10エルサレムの長老たちは、荒布をまとって地に座り、
黙り込んでいます。
彼らは悲しみ、失望して、頭にちりをかぶります。
おとめたちも、恥ずかしがって頭を垂れます。
11私は涙のかれるまで泣きました。
同胞の身に起こったことを見て、
悲しみのあまり胸が張り裂け、
身を切られる思いでした。
幼い子どもや、生まれたばかりの赤ん坊が、
道ばたで衰弱し、息絶えていくのです。
12子どもたちは「何か食べたい」と訴えるように、
乳の出ない母の胸に顔を埋めます。
小さないのちは、
戦場で傷ついた兵士のように消えていきます。
13今までこんな悲惨なことがあったでしょうか。
エルサレムよ。
あなたの苦悩を何にたとえたらよいでしょう。
どのようにして慰めたらよいのでしょう。
その傷は海よりも深く、だれにもいやせません。
14預言者たちは、多くのまやかしを預言しました。
あなたの罪を指摘して、
何とかしてあなたが奴隷にならないようにしようと、
努力することもありませんでした。
うそを並べ立て、
万事うまくいくと言ったのです。
15道行く人たちはみな、あざけって頭を振り、
「これが『世界で最も美しい都』とも、
『全地の喜び』とも呼ばれていた町なのか」
とさげすみます。
16敵はあなたをあざ笑い、
ののしって言います。
「とうとう、この都を滅ぼしたぞ。
待ちに待った時がついにきた。
この目で、都が倒れるのを見た。」
17しかし、このようにしたのは主です。
主は、警告どおりのことをしたのです。
ずっと前から決めていた
エルサレムを破壊するという約束を実現させたのです。
容赦なくエルサレムを滅ぼし、
敵がこの町のことで喜び、
自分たちの力を自慢するように仕向けたのです。
18その時、人々は主の前で泣きました。
エルサレムの城壁よ、昼も夜も、
存分に泣きなさい。
涙が川となって落ちるまでに。
19夜を徹して、神に叫びなさい。
主に向かって両手を上げ、
心を水のように注ぎ出しなさい。
飢えて道にしゃがみ込んでいる子どもたちのために、
ひたすら祈りなさい。
20主よ、思い直してください。
このような仕打ちをしている相手は、
神の民ではありませんか。
母親が、ひざの上であやしたわが子を
食べていいのでしょうか。
祭司や預言者が、神殿で殺されてよいのでしょうか。
21老人も幼い者も、男も女も、
敵の剣にかかって路上に倒れています。
主よ。あなたが怒って無慈悲に殺したのです。
22あなたが、この恐ろしい破壊を招き寄せたのです。
あなたの怒りの日、逃げ延びた者や生き残った者は、
一人もいません。
幼い子どもたちはみな敵の手に落ち、
冷たくなって路上に横たわっています。
