1Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore; 3And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel? 4And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death. 6And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. 7How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8¶ And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. 10And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. 11And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.21.11 hath lain…: Heb. knoweth the lying with man 12And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.21.12 young…: Heb. young women virgins 13And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.21.13 to speak…: Heb. and spake and called21.13 call…: or, proclaim peace 14And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not. 15And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16¶ Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. 18Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.21.19 yearly: Heb. from year to year21.19 on the east…: or, toward the sunrising21.19 of the highway: or, on the highway 20Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; 21And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.21.22 Be favourable…: or, Gratify us in them 23And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. 24And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. 25In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
Benjamins män saknar hustrur
1Israeliterna hade svurit vid Mispa att de aldrig skulle tillåta sina döttrar att gifta sig med män från Benjamins stam. 2De samlades vid Betel och satt långt fram på kvällen inför Gud och grät bittert.
3”Herre, Israels Gud”, bad de. ”Varför skulle detta hända? Varför måste en av Israels stammar saknas idag?”
4Följande morgon var de uppe tidigt och byggde ett altare där de offrade brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer. 5Och de sa till varandra: ”Var det någon stam i Israel som inte var representerad när vi höll vårt rådslag inför Herren i Mispa?” Man hade nämligen svurit en ed att den som inte infann sig inför Herren i Mispa skulle dödas 6och nu var det stor sorg i hela Israel över deras bröder benjaminiterna. ”En hel stam är borthuggen från Israel”, sa de. 7”Och hur ska vi få hustrur åt de män som finns kvar, eftersom vi har svurit vid Herren att inte ge dem våra döttrar?”
8Då frågade de: ”Finns det någon av Israels stammar som inte infann sig inför Herren i Mispa?” De upptäckte att ingen från Javesh i Gilead hade kommit till lägret för att delta i samlingen. 9Folket mönstrades och det visade sig att ingen från Javesh i Gilead varit där.
10De skickade då 12 000 soldater för att döda folket i Javesh i Gilead, även kvinnor och barn. 11”Så här ska ni göra”, sa de, ”alla män och alla kvinnor som legat med en man ska ni viga åt förintelse.” 12Bland invånarna i Javesh i Gilead fann de 400 unga flickor som ännu inte haft någon man och dem förde man till lägret i Shilo i Kanaan.
13Sedan sände Israel en fredsdelegation till det som återstod av Benjamin vid Rimmons klippa och erbjöd dem fred. 14Dessa benjaminiter återvände hem och fick de 400 flickorna från Javesh i Gilead som man låtit leva, men flickorna räckte inte åt alla. 15Folket kände medlidande med benjaminiterna för det gap Herren låtit uppstå bland Israels stammar.
16”Hur ska vi bära oss åt för att skaffa hustrur åt de andra när nu alla kvinnor i Benjamins stam är döda?” frågade de äldste i menigheten. 17”Det måste finnas något sätt att rädda Benjamin, så att inte en hel stam i Israel går förlorad för alltid. 18Men vi kan inte ge dem våra egna döttrar. Vi israeliter har ju svurit en ed: förbannad är den som ger en hustru åt någon benjaminit.”
19”Men”, sa de, ”varje år firas ju Herrens högtid i Shilo.” Shilo ligger norr om Betel på östra sidan av vägen mellan Betel och Shekem söder om Levona.
20De sa till benjaminiterna: ”Gå och göm er i vingårdarna 21och när ni ser flickorna från Shilo komma ut för att dansa, ska ni rusa fram och ta till er var sin hustru och föra dem med er hem till Benjamin. 22När deras fäder och bröder kommer till oss och protesterar, ska vi säga: ’Visa oss medlidande och försök förstå! Alla fick inte tag i en hustru i kriget och ni kunde ju inte ha gett era döttrar till dem utan att ha dragit skuld över er.’ ”
23Männen från Benjamins stam gjorde som de blivit tillsagda. De kidnappade var och en åt sig en hustru av de dansande flickorna och tog dem med sig hem till sitt eget land. Sedan byggde de upp sina städer på nytt och bosatte sig i dem. 24Och israeliterna återvände var och en till sin stam och sin släkt, var och en till sitt eget område.
25Det fanns inte någon kung i Israel på den tiden och var och en gjorde vad han själv fann för gott.
