1Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh. 2And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. 3(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness? 4And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.20.4 the Levite: Heb. the man the Levite 5And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.20.5 forced: Heb. humbled 6And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel. 7Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.
8¶ And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house. 9But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it; 10And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel. 11So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.20.11 knit…: Heb. fellows
12¶ And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you? 13Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel: 14But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel. 15And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. 16Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss. 17And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
18¶ And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first. 19And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah. 20And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah. 21And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men. 22And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day. 23(And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.) 24And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day. 25And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
26¶ Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 27And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, 28And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand. 29And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah. 30And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times. 31And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.20.31 to smite…: Heb. to smite of the people wounded as at, etc20.31 the house…: or, Beth-el 32And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. Comunitatea s‑a strâns astfel ca un singur om înaintea Domnului, la Mițpa. 2Conducătorii întregului popor, ai tuturor semințiilor lui Israel, s‑au înfățișat în adunarea poporului lui Dumnezeu: erau patru sute de mii de pedestrași în stare să scoată sabia. 3Fiii lui Beniamin au auzit că fiii lui Israel s‑au suit la Mițpa. Fiii lui Israel au zis:
– Spuneți, cum s‑a întâmplat răul acesta?
4Atunci, levitul, bărbatul femeii care fusese ucisă, a luat cuvântul și le‑a zis:
– Eu și țiitoarea mea intrasem în Ghiva, care aparține de Beniamin, ca să înnoptăm acolo. 5Dar locuitorii Ghivei s‑au ridicat împotriva mea, au înconjurat pe timp de noapte casa în care eram și au vrut să mă ucidă. Mi‑au necinstit țiitoarea până când a murit. 6Atunci mi‑am apucat țiitoarea, am tăiat‑o în bucăți și le‑am trimis prin toată țara moștenită de Israel, căci au săvârșit o desfrânare și o spurcăciune în Israel. 7Iată‑vă pe toți, fii ai lui Israel: vorbiți între voi și sfătuiți‑vă aici!
8Tot poporul s‑a ridicat ca un singur om, zicând:
– Niciunul din noi nu va pleca la cortul lui. Nimeni nu se va întoarce acasă. 9Iată acum ce‑i vom face Ghivei: o vom lua cu asalt după cum vom ieși la sorți! 10Din toate semințiile lui Israel vom lua zece bărbați dintr‑o sută, o sută dintr‑o mie și o mie din zece mii. Aceștia vor aduce provizii pentru popor. Apoi, când ei se vor întoarce, vom pedepsi Ghiva lui Beniamin potrivit cu toată spurcăciunea pe care a săvârșit‑o în Israel.
11Toți bărbații lui Israel s‑au strâns împotriva cetății, uniți ca un singur om. 12Semințiile lui Israel au trimis niște bărbați prin toată seminția lui Beniamin ca să spună: „Ce înseamnă răul acesta care a avut loc printre voi? 13Acum, predați‑i pe oamenii aceia, pe acei fii ai lui Belial13 Sensul literal al termenului Belial este fără folos(ință), fără utilitate (bun de nimic). În sens lărgit, termenul se poate traduce cu ticălos, netrebnic. Vezi și nota din 2 Cor. 6:15. care sunt în Ghiva, ca să‑i omorâm și să nimicim astfel răul din Israel!“ Dar fiii lui Beniamin n‑au vrut să asculte de glasul fraților lor, fiii lui Israel.
14Fiii lui Beniamin s‑au strâns din cetățile lor la Ghiva ca să iasă la luptă împotriva fiilor lui Israel. 15În ziua aceea, s‑au mobilizat din cetăți douăzeci și șase de mii de fii ai lui Beniamin în stare să scoată sabia, în afară de locuitorii Ghivei, care s‑au strâns în număr de șapte sute de bărbați aleși. 16Din tot poporul aceasta, șapte sute de bărbați aleși erau stângaci. Toți aceștia, trăgând cu praștia, puteau ținti chiar și un fir de păr și nu greșeau.
17În afară de Beniamin, oamenii lui Israel care se adunaseră erau patru sute de mii de bărbați în stare să scoată sabia. Toți aceștia erau războinici. 18Ei s‑au ridicat, s‑au suit la Betel și L‑au întrebat pe Dumnezeu.
Fiii lui Israel au zis:
– Care dintre noi să se suie primul la război împotriva fiilor lui Beniamin?
Domnul le‑a răspuns:
– Iuda să se suie primul!
19Fiii lui Israel s‑au sculat dimineața și și‑au așezat tabăra lângă Ghiva. 20Apoi au ieșit la luptă împotriva celor din Beniamin și s‑au așezat în linie de bătaie, înaintea Ghivei. 21Fiii lui Beniamin au ieșit din Ghiva și au doborât la pământ în ziua aceea douăzeci și două de mii de bărbați din Israel. 22Poporul, bărbații lui Israel, s‑a îmbărbătat și s‑a așezat din nou în linie de bătaie în locul în care se așezase în prima zi.
23Între timp, fiii lui Israel s‑au suit și au plâns înaintea Domnului până seara.
Ei L‑au întrebat pe Domnul, zicând:
– Să pornim din nou la luptă împotriva fiilor lui Beniamin, frații noștri?
Domnul le‑a răspuns:
– Suiți‑vă împotriva lor!
24Astfel, fiii lui Israel au înaintat a doua zi împotriva fiilor lui Beniamin. 25Dar și a doua zi cei din Beniamin au ieșit din Ghiva ca să‑i înfrunte și iarăși au doborât la pământ optsprezece mii de bărbați din fiii lui Israel, toți în stare să scoată sabia.
26Atunci, toți fiii lui Israel, deci tot poporul, s‑au suit la Betel și au plâns. În ziua aceea, au rămas acolo, în prezența Domnului, au postit până seara și au adus înaintea Domnului arderi‑de‑tot și jertfe de pace26 Adesea tradus prin jertfe de comuniune sau jertfe de mulțumire, deoarece poartă și aceste sensuri.. 27Fiii lui Israel L‑au întrebat pe Domnul – în zilele acelea, Chivotul Legământului cu Dumnezeu era acolo, 28iar Fineas, fiul lui Elazar, fiul lui Aaron, slujea înaintea lui în zilele acelea – și I‑au zis:
– Să ies din nou la luptă împotriva fiilor lui Beniamin, fratele meu, sau să încetez?
Domnul a răspuns:
– Suiți‑vă, căci mâine îi voi da în mâna ta!
29Atunci, Israel a pus la pândă niște oameni împrejurul cetății Ghiva. 30A treia zi, fiii lui Israel s‑au suit împotriva fiilor lui Beniamin și s‑au așezat înaintea Ghivei ca și în celelalte ocazii. 31Fiii lui Beniamin au ieșit să întâlnească poporul, fiind astfel îndepărtați de lângă cetate. Au început să lovească în popor și să ucidă ca în celelalte ocazii, pe drumurile cele mari – unul care duce la Betel și altul la Ghiva – și în câmpie. Au ucis aproape treizeci de bărbați din Israel. 32Fiii lui Beniamin ziceau: „Iată‑i învinși înaintea noastră ca și mai înainte!“ Dar fiii lui Israel ziceau: „Să fugim și să‑i îndepărtăm de cetate spre drumurile cele mari!“
33Toți bărbații lui Israel s‑au ridicat din locurile lor și s‑au regrupat la Baal-Tamar, iar Israelul care stătea la pândă s‑a năpustit din locul în care era, la apus33 Unele mss ale LXX, Vulgata. Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur. de Ghiva. 34Zece mii de oameni aleși din tot Israelul au înaintat împotriva Ghivei. Bătălia a fost aprigă, iar beniamiții nici nu‑și imaginau că va veni asupra lor un asemenea dezastru. 35Domnul i‑a învins pe cei din Beniamin înaintea lui Israel și astfel fiii lui Israel au doborât în acea zi, în Beniamin, douăzeci și cinci de mii o sută de bărbați, toți aceștia în stare să scoată sabia. 36Fiii lui Beniamin au văzut că au fost învinși.
Atunci când bărbații lui Israel s‑au lăsat urmăriți de cei din Beniamin, ei s‑au bazat pe oamenii care fuseseră puși la pândă în apropierea Ghivei. 37Cei ce stăteau la pândă au înaintat repede împotriva Ghivei, s‑au năpustit asupra ei și au trecut cetatea prin ascuțișul sabiei. 38Semnalul pe care bărbații lui Israel îl hotărâseră cu cei ce stăteau la pândă era acela că ei trebuiau să înalțe în cetate un nor mare de fum. 39Doar atunci bărbații lui Israel ar fi trebuit să se întoarcă în luptă.
Dar cei din Beniamin începuseră să lovească, iar pentru că numărul celor uciși din Israel era aproape de treizeci de oameni, ei își ziceau: „Cu siguranță sunt pe deplin învinși înaintea noastră ca în prima luptă!“ 40Când coloana de fum a început să se înalțe din cetate, cei din Beniamin au privit înapoi și au observat‑o cum se înălța din întreaga cetate înspre cer. 41Atunci bărbații lui Israel s‑au întors. Când au văzut dezastrul care‑i aștepta, bărbații lui Beniamin s‑au îngrozit. 42Au fugit dinaintea bărbaților lui Israel spre drumul pustiei, dar n‑au putut scăpa de luptă, iar cei din cetăți i‑au doborât în mijlocul lor. 43Ei i‑au înconjurat pe cei din Beniamin, i‑au urmărit fără încetare43 Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur. și i‑au nimicit până în fața Ghivei, spre răsărit. 44Optsprezece mii de bărbați din Beniamin au căzut, toți aceștia fiind bărbați viteji. 45Unii au fugit și au scăpat în pustie, la Stânca lui Rimon. Israeliții au ucis la drumurile cele mari cinci mii dintre ei. Pe alții i‑au urmărit până la Ghidom45 Sau: până i‑au ciopârțit. și au ucis dintre aceștia două mii de bărbați.
46Astfel, toți cei din Beniamin care au căzut în ziua aceea au fost douăzeci și cinci de mii de bărbați în stare să scoată sabia, toți bărbați viteji. 47Dintre cei care au fugit și au scăpat în pustie, la Stânca lui Rimon, au mai rămas șase sute de bărbați. Ei au locuit la Stânca lui Rimon timp de patru luni. 48Bărbații lui Israel s‑au întors la fiii lui Beniamin și au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei toate cetățile cu tot ce au găsit în ele: oameni și animale. Ei au dat foc tuturor acestor cetăți pe care le‑au găsit în cale.
