And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web. 14And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15¶ And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;16.16 vexed: Heb. shortened 17That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
21¶ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.16.21 put out: Heb. bored out

1ある日、サムソンはペリシテ人の町ガザへ行き、一人の娼婦と夜を過ごしました。 2たちまち、「サムソンを見かけた」といううわさが広まり、町の人々は警戒を強化し、彼の帰りぎわを押さえようと、夜通し町の門で待ち伏せました。「明け方になったら、見つけ出して殺してしまおう」と思ったのです。 3しかし、真夜中まで女と過ごしたサムソンは、そのあと町の門まで行き、二本の門柱もろとも引き抜くと、高々とかつぎ上げ、ヘブロンの向こう側にある山の頂まで運んで行きました。
4そののちサムソンは、ソレクの谷に住むデリラという女を愛するようになりました。 5ペリシテ人の五人の領主がじきじきに彼女を訪ね、「サムソンの力の秘密を探ってくれないか。どうしたら、あの男を鎖で縛り上げてやれるか、ぜひとも知りたいのだ」と頼みました。もちろん、ただではありません。「この仕事を引き受けてくれたら、めいめいが銀千百枚を出そう」と約束したのです。
6そこでデリラはサムソンに、力の秘密を打ち明けてほしいと頼みました。「ねえサムソン、どうしてそんなに強いの。教えてちょうだい。だれかがあなたを捕まえるなんて、できっこないわよね。」
7「そうだな。真新しい七本の弓の弦で縛られでもすれば、私も人並みの力しか出せないだろうな。」
8例の領主たちは、さっそく七本の弓弦を持って来ました。デリラは眠っているサムソンを縛り上げ、 9隣室には幾人かを潜ませておいて、大声で叫んだのです。「サムソン！ ペリシテ人が襲いに来たわ！」するとどうでしょう。サムソンは、弓弦を木綿糸のようにあっという間に断ち切ってしまったのです。こうして彼の力の秘密は、だれにも知られませんでした。
10するとまた、デリラはサムソンにからみました。「私をからかったのね。うそつき。ねえ、どうしたらあなたを縛り上げることができるのか、教えてちょうだい。」
11「わかったよ。まだ使ったことのない新しい綱で縛ってみろよ。普通の人と同じぐらいの力しか出せないから。」
12それでデリラは、サムソンが眠ったころを見はからって新しい綱を取り出し、縛り上げました。前と同じように隣室に幾人かを潜ませ、またも大声で叫んだのです。「サムソン！ ペリシテ人が捕まえに来たわ！」ところがサムソンは、まるでくもの巣でも払うように、綱を腕からはずしてしまったのです。
13「また私をばかにして、とんでもないでたらめを言ったのね。ねえ、お願い。ほんとうのことを教えて。どうしたらあなたを縛り上げることができるのか。」
「ああ、わかったよ。私の髪を、おまえの機に織り込んでみるんだな。」
14デリラはサムソンが眠ったのを確かめ、言われたとおり、彼の長い髪の毛を機に織り込むと、わざと悲鳴を上げました。「ペリシテ人よ！ サムソン！」サムソンは目を覚ますと、髪をぐいと引っぱり、機を壊してしまいました。
15デリラは泣き出しそうな声で言いました。「よくも愛してるなんて言えるわね。ちっとも私を信用してくれないくせに。もう三度もだまされたわ。それでもまだ、力の秘密を教えてはくれないのね。」
16-17寝ても覚めても彼女がせがみ続けるので、サムソンは死ぬほどつらくなって、ついに秘密を打ち明けました。「実は、私の頭にはかみそりが一度も当てられたことがないんだ。私は生まれる前から神にささげられたナジル人だから。もし髪がそり落とされたら、私の力もおしまいさ。ほかの人と同じになるんだ。」
18とうとう彼はほんとうのことを明かしたのです。デリラはさっそく、ペリシテ人の五人の領主を呼びにやりました。「もう一度お越しください。今度こそ間違いありません。」
彼らは約束の金を用意してやって来ました。 19彼女はひざ枕でサムソンを眠らせると、床屋を呼び、髪をそり落とさせました。念のためサムソンをたたいてみると、確かに彼の力はなくなっているようです。 20もう大丈夫と、デリラはまた悲鳴を上げました。「ペリシテ人が捕まえに来たわ！ サムソン！」サムソンは目を覚まし、「なあに、いつもの調子で片づけよう。体をひと揺すりすれば、思いのままさ」と考えました。主が自分から去ったことに気づいていなかったのです。 21ペリシテ人はサムソンを捕まえると、目をえぐり出し、ガザへ連れて行きました。そこで青銅の足かせをはめて牢に入れ、臼を引かせました。 22しかしその間に、サムソンの髪は少しずつ伸びていました。
23-24ペリシテ人の領主たちは、サムソンを捕らえたことを祝う盛大な祭りを催しました。人々は彼らの神ダゴンにいけにえをささげ、熱狂的に賛美しました。
獄中のサムソンを満足げに眺めながら、「われわれの神は、宿敵サムソンを引き渡してくださった。同胞を大ぜい殺した元凶が、今はあのざまだ」と言いました。 25-26いいかげん、みなの酔いが回ったころでした。「サムソンを連れ出せ！ 見せ物にして楽しもうじゃないか」という声が上がりました。サムソンは牢から引き出され、神殿の中央の大屋根を支える二本の柱の間に立たされました。彼は手を引いている若者に頼みました。「両手を二本の柱にすがらせてくれ。寄りかかって休みたいんだ。」
27この時、神殿は立錐の余地もないほど、人で埋め尽くされていました。五人の領主も臨席しており、バルコニーにも三千人の男女がひしめいて、サムソンの様子をおもしろ半分に見つめていました。
28サムソンは主に祈りました。「ああ神、主よ。どうかもう一度、私のことを思い出してください。今一度、力をお与えください。ペリシテ人にえぐられた二つの目の復讐をさせてください。」
29祈り終わると、全力を振り絞って二本の柱を押しました。 30最後にサムソンは、「ペリシテ人もろとも死なせてください！」と祈りました。すると神殿は、領主たちをはじめ、居合わせた全員の上にくずれ落ちていったのです。なんと、サムソンがこの時殺した者は、彼が生きている間に殺した者より多くいました。
31その後、サムソンの兄弟や身内が来て遺体を引き取り、郷里に運んで、ツォルアとエシュタオルとの間にある、父マノアの墓に葬りました。サムソンが士師としてイスラエルを裁いたのは二十年間でした。
